    gorchakova can be seen in the Met’s video of Pique Dame and she indeed was a marvelous singer. i only saw her once in Don Carlo. it’s too bad her career was so short.

    What a pity that Gorchakova's voice didn't last! She's astounding here, with this dark low register and those floating high pianissimis. Galuzin is a miracle, fortunately he's still in great shape! Is it possible to find this version on DVD? Would love to posess it!

    Gorchakova was a wonderfully exciting, rich voiced performer. The vocal decline was not as sudden as is sometimes claimed--about the same time she got on the wrong side of Gergiev who began to speak unkindly about her in high places. Her Norma in San Diego 2003 brought a Ponselle like luster to the role, though canary fanciers crabbily rejected the sound of such a strong voice in the part. Ultimately, however, the voice did lose much of its attractiveness. This is understandable in part given its overuse at the Marinsky (many other singers who started working under Gergiev would distance themselves from his control as soon as they could).
