Cage masted ships are among the proudest traditions of the United States Navy. Just like the Hotel is to France.
"Do I just go battleship + torpedo boat?"
Yeeeessss, channel your inner Tex! All hail the Very High Very Low fleet doctrine!
Zumwalt continues to smile on us.
French just keep winning :P
It's also voting day here in the UK, so fellow Brits, if you've not been, go vote!
Excellent advice! You still have three hours or so - exercise your rights!
38:41 The convention of naming Battleships after States was instituted only in 1899, so, Truxtun is still a possible name for a Battleship.
Seeing a cage mast makes me wanna dump some tea over not being in represented in the government

I agree. I was expecting calm music and got "The Star Spangled Banner" blaring out of my TV while I was well away from it.

I already can see the newspapers titles about the first battle: "The Mad Dash of the Torpedo Boats. Brave commander of a Torpedo Boat Squadron leads his vessels into the enemy fleet and wreack havoc by launching his torpedoes to allow the Light Cruisers to destroy the enemy."
Also, please, try to keep your ships until they really cannot stand the enemy (that means that the Delaware would remain in service at least for other 5 or 6 years, and the Truxtuns at least until the Dreadnoughts).
And here I thought you'd take a break for another day... Good to see you again...
I did take two days off, it’s just which two days appear differently to channel members as you get to see videos early 😄
didn't expect another Campaign before the update dropped, but glad to see it.

At least we didn't need to blame the Maine on Spain here.🤣
Sorry I can't help with the beta testing, I haven't been able to sit at my computer for half a year now due to my back injury but I love what you've been up to. Keep up the great work brother
@@BrotherMunro it's appreciated
When you said T8 immediately followed by T5 I had to double check. I thought you said T85 and was very concerned that you had 85 torpedo boats already.
If you wait until you do one round of increasing your dockyard size, you can then build the full displacement version of the small battleship, and have another one or two designs available as well.
It just means that you have to practice some diplomacy for the first couple years, until you have the enough tonnage built to do naval invasions, before kicking off the war with Spain.
The best option I've found for an initial fleet build with the US, is to build enough of the torpedo cruisers to have one in every port on the East Coast and Carribean, to where I've got some money left over, and then do a max dockyard expansion - by the time that's done, you're in a position to do some serious fleet expansion.
Thank you for posting this. I see you lined it up for Independence Day. Thank you from the US!
To our other English-speaking brothers! Cheers to Scotland

It's an honor for you to represent our country, good sir.

44:15: Someone should drop the developers a note. "Clase" before Conde de Venadito just means The Conde de Venaditor Class. The ship is really just Conde de Venadito.

Re: Draft Design of the Missoula class of armored cruisers.
Bureau of Construction and Repair, Design Division:
Bureau Report: 15-Jan-1889
The Missoula class of armored cruisers was designed to a target displacement of 6,000 tons and a top speed of 18 knots.
The class would have had three steam engines provided steam by three naturally aspirated boilers burning coal vented though two funnels generating 17,001 indicated horsepower turning two screws for the required top speed on a design displacement of 5,933 tons fully loaded with a balanced rudder turned by steam power for an operational range of 1,921 nautical miles.
The class' main battery was to be two twin turrets mounted fore and aft bearing 8"/24 Mark 1 guns with 8" face, 1.5" top, 6" barbette compound armor, turned by hydraulic power with enhanced reloading, with new internal barbette armor to prevent penetration. The main magazine was to carry a balanced standard load of standard sized 50% Base Fuze HE and 50% capped AP shells using Brown Powder as the propellant and Black Powder as the bursting charge. The secondary battery was to be sixteen 4"/32 Mark 1 casemate guns with 3" face, 0.2" top compound armor. A tertiary battery consisted of five single mounts with 2"/25 mark 1 guns. The secondary and tertiary magazines would carry a HE heavy standard load of standard sized 62.5% Base Fuze HE and 37.5% capped AP shells.
Compound armor was to be clade 6" on the main belt, 3" on the extended belt, 0.3" on the main deck, 0.2" on the extended deck, .2" on the inner deck, 3" on the superstructure, and 8" on the conning tower. The Class was to have a single bottom hull and bulkheads separating extensive compartmentation. A crew of 417 officers and enlisted men would have standard quarters.
Build time would have been 12 months with a commissioning time of 2 months. Cost per ship would be $18,035,720, and monthly maintenance in port of $950,283. Congress refused to fund this new class of ship.

Re: Design of the Truxton class of battleships.
Bureau of Construction and Repair, Design Division:
Bureau Report: 21-May-1893
The Truxton class will consist of up to eight battleships designed to a target displacement of 12,500 tons and a top speed of 18 knots for a total tonnage of 100,000.
The class has three triple expansion engines provided steam by three naturally aspirated boilers burning coal vented though three funnels generating 4,541 indicated horsepower turning three screws for the required top speed on a design displacement of 12,224 tons fully loaded with a balanced rudder turned by steam power for an operational range of 2,746 nautical miles.
The class' main battery is two twin turrets mounted fore and aft bearing 12"/35 Mark 1 guns with 15" face, 4" top, and 14" barbette compound armor, turned by hydraulic power with enhanced reloading, and internal barbette armor to prevent penetration. The main magazine carries a balanced load of standard sized 50% Base Fuze HE and 50% Standard AP shells using White Powder as the propellant and Gun Cotton as the bursting charge. The secondary battery is 16x1 6"/40 Mark 1 casemate guns with 3" face and 0.5" top Compound armor. A tertiary battery consists of two twin turrets bearing 5"/38 mark 1 guns mounted atop the main battery turrets with 2" face and 0.5" top compound armor. The secondary and tertiary magazines carry a HE heavy standard load of standard sized 62.5% Base Fuze HE and 37.5% capped AP shells. Six Mark 1 under water tubes launching a standard load of 16" torpedoes with compressed air aided combustion rounds out the armament.
Compound armor is clade 14" on the main belt, 3" on the extended belt, 1.5" on the main deck, 0.5" on the extended deck, .1" on the inner deck, 3" on the superstructure, and 15" on the conning tower. The Class has a single bottom hull and bulkheads separating extensive compartmentation. A crew of 612 officers and enlisted men will be provided standard quarters.
The class has not yet received approval by Congress and names other than Truxton have not been assigned. Build time will be 13 months with a commissioning time of 3 months. Cost per ship will be $45,409,100, and monthly maintenance in port of $1,787,950.
I recently also had the thought moment of "it's casement guns, right?". Nope, I guess it's "casemate". I am assuming that I just inadvertently skipped into near-identical parallel universe, and in my previous universe it was indeed "casement". :)
I don’t even know anymore 😂 I should ask Drach if it is “case ment” or “case mate”
I can't think of anyone better to ask. You definitely should.
According to Wikipedia (source of all true knowledge™) "Casemate" is a fortified gun emplacement (land or sea), "Casement" is a window hinged at the sides.
So at this stage of the game, they are indeed casement guns. 😛
It's funny.
I love having a very Battleship heavy Navy, but I have learnt the hard way, the very hard way how important the fast, really fast support ships are.
Yesterday I was jumped by 4 Japanese Battleships, supported by 20+ light ships and 80 ! Yes 80 !!! Torpedo boats ! They had seriously sailed 100+ ships into the Atlantic to attack my East Coast.
I was very glad I had 2 squadrons of light cruisers to support my 2 Battleships, even those dumb 3-Mast dead slow Lights helped to keep my Battlewagons safe.
Re: Design of the T-Class class of torpedo boats.
Bureau of Construction and Repair, Design Division:
Bureau Report: 4-Jul-1889
The T-Class class will consist of thirteen torpedo boats designed to a target displacement of 275 tons and a top speed of 27 knots.
The class has three steam engines provided steam by three naturally aspirated boilers burning coal vented though four funnels generating 3,331 indicated horsepower turning one screws for the required top speed on a design displacement of 263 tons fully loaded with a balanced rudder turned by steam power for an operational range of 3,038 nautical miles.
The class' main battery is one single 4"/27 Mark 1 gun turned by hydraulic power with enhanced reloading, and with internal barbette armor to prevent penetration. The magazine carries a balanced standard load of standard sized 50% Base Fuze HE and 50% capped AP shells using Brown Powder as the propellant and Black Powder as the bursting charge. Two single Mark 1 deck torpedo mounts launching a standard load of 15" torpedoes with compressed air aided combustion rounds out the armament.
The Class has a single bottom hull and bulkheads separating extensive compartmentation. A crew of 14 officers and enlisted men will be provided cramped quarters.
The class will consist of the lead boat T1, and T2 to T13. Build time will be 6 months with a commissioning time of 1 months. Cost per boat will be $1,059,245, and monthly maintenance in port of $55,928.
50:38: I've decided I really hate the fact that ships that escape become "unknown" even though you KNOW which ones got hit. It makes things so much harder.
Well played
As an American, I love the timelapse music with a trumpet that sounds like a wet fart lol.
Its me playing Trombone Champ which is a hilarious game
Haven't seen the new models for the US Pre dreads BBs before, they look great
Back again for round two? I look forward to more naval shenanigans! o7
Im thinking once i finish my italian campaign (as of writing its 1945) ill probably install youre mod and start another campaign with it, well, as long as there isnt another game update
That accuracy was completely realistic for the Spanish American war!
The blame on Spain falls mainly on The Maine
Ooooh, this reference strokes my cerebral cortex in allll the right waysss...
🤗
You know, I think, that really sounds Lame!
I feel like the California class name should be reserved for a big fucking ship, to reflect the size of Cali and its economy. That said, Delaware fits really well. Maybe the TExas could be some huge fucker with lots of funnels and a handful of huge guns instead of smaller ones? A sort of thematic ship, based on 'kill 'em and you don't need defence'
Ohhhh yes!!!
Let's go! I was fully expecting Spain to come out with galleons and cannonballs. Would not have been that far-fetched, given the state of their navy in those years.
And wait, channel members can buy the naming rights for ships too? In that case, if it's OK with you, I'd like to name a ship the "USS Hyperion". Not just because it's the name of a titan (which makes it immediately cool), but also because it's the name of the flagship of Admiral Yang Wen-li, freedom fighter extraordinaire in the "Legend of the Galactic Heroes" series of books and anime.
I’m being a little cheeky - there’s some new channel membership levels to purchase naming rights - Patreons are getting naming rights folded into their existing perks :)
@@BrotherMunro Oooh, I see, I didn't quite get it from the video. Makes sense. I'll give it a look later!

On the Verge of War!
New York Evening Journal: Hearst Communications
MDCCCXCII: 5 September 1892
The government in Madrid is accusing America of complacency in the assassination of their Naval Minister, and have demanded huge monetary concessions out of the emergency fund of the United States Navy to “forget the incident”. Washington has of course said no.
Ah yes happiness
You should go back to doing historical gun sizes like for the Americans having 12inch as early main guns then the 14s then the 16s and having 5inch and 2inch sec guns
Also please keep some of the pre dreadnoughts I like the new guns on the old hulls
At some point we should have a conversation about how to intercept enemy ships, by steering for where they are going to be when you arrive rather than steering for where they are now.
Any chance you could make this campaign a "historical calibers" one (i.e. you only use the caliber guns that the US actually used)?
Hmmmm I might do but I do love 15 inch guns and I’ll probably need to use something bigger than a 16 towards the end
interested to see how this goes. one thing i found worked well for me was taking Austria- Hungary's ports ASAP as it gave me a place to base myself in wars with Italy and Spain along side also as it turned out gave me a great base to take over the black sea.
also name request of Nieuw Amsterdam for a ship with reason being new York used used to be Nieuw Amsterdam
I only ask for one request that you keep your first three battleships as long as you can.
YYYYYEEEEEEAAAAAAHHHHH BBBBOOOOOOOOOOOOIIIIIII
Heads up, you forgot to select for Barbette technology when you made the Delaware Class.
I’ll fix it later :)
HOLY SHIT DELAWARE MENTIONED!!!
I wouldnt count out those 2in guns, they come in very handy for dealing with TBs and DDS in the first 15 years or so
An interesting fact for you: The german word for "casemate guns" is "Kasemattengeschütz". They do sound rather similar.
Is there a way to allow you to focus ur research on specific calibers if so can u add that to the mod
In theory yes, or at least I can add a research group, but it would be very tricky to get to work properly and also would make the install for the mod more complex
Time to build a New Navy
New York Evening Journal: Hearst Communications
MCMLXXXVIII: 12 January 1888
The new Secretary of the Navy has announced that he is directing the Admiral heading the Bureau of Construction and Repair design a new class of “Battleship” to take the United States Navy into the 20th century. This is part of the Secretary’s overall push to modernize the fleet within the constraints of his budget enforced by the myopic and miserly naval committees of the United States Senate and the United States House of Representatives. Congress it seems cannot see the clear danger the presence of so many European ships in the waters of the Caribbean present to the commerce and coasts of the United States.
It's time to see the merican side
I quite like the Small battleship I in a mini-ish variant as an Ersatz type early Heavy cruiser.
Early Cruiser hulls are trash.
Small BB I has such nice deck positions for secondaries.....
Hello BM, just asking, what's the best first nation to play in campaign for new people ?
Hmmm. I’d actually say the US is a pretty good choice, very little chance of you getting invaded & a massive economy
Hmm. I'm a little leery about Truxton's mixed secondary battery (6" *and* 5" guns?).
Hmmm, maybe I should make the 5’s into
5.9”s to fix that
@@BrotherMunro Or maybe replace the 6" casemates with 5s?

Why did you not continue using T5 and T12, they had, I believe, still 2 respective 3 torpedoes on board ... they could keep an eye on the CLs. even if they do not commit to attack.
The boring answer is that it is more a case of saving my cognitive load, once I tell them to retreat I can forget about them
@46:55 Timelapse music choice from an American's POV: Legendary!
It's safe to say: ANY campaign you start and go thru with building/refitting ships: YOU ALWAYS start a new saga. This time around: FORGOT barbette protection on the Delaware's.
Edit: I'll let it slide this time ONLY for you've caught it AND plan on ridding the ship (imo GOOD RIDDANCE!!!)
Oh, that music has got me in patriotic spirits once again. Recent decade, I've lost TOTAL faith in the country. Why? Read the news.
What is the dreadnaught improvement project?
It is a mod I wrote after I got so angry with submarines I wanted to quit playing the game. It is essentially a cross between the balance mod (which I used a lot) and the excellent Naval Arms Race mod, or at least that is how it started. It is now basically me tweaking the game to make it more fun to play.
how do you get your map to colour code like that?
There’s a scroll icon at the top right of the map screen, press that and the colours show (not a mod thing, although DIP does use different colours)
You cannot select 5" casemates if neither hull nor superstructure offer any 5" casemate slots.
Long Live America
It didn't appear the 4" guns on the TB's were firing at all. Could the 4"er be too big to rotate?
Also, the horn on my National Anthem was awful! Retired US Navy veteran.
Played it myself!

As an American naval warfare enthusiast, I assure you: A mistake of this magnitude only adds authenticity to your campaign 💩
That you're planning on rectifying it so quickly, though... Perhaps not so much.
😅🙃
The Delaware hull is fun in the future, despite how useless it is since it's so quickly replaced
You can have decent armour at 20 or so knots, with a single barrel 18 inch gun
Is such a battle moniter useful? Uh... Only against CA's, their health pool is low due to their low tonnage
They are extremely chep to operate though
can you try to get to a close to world domination
I’ll try, though Legendary will make that a little harder
Can we Get an Idaho as a Capitol ship and a light cruiser named " Left turn Clyde "?
😅 Idaho almost certainly will turn up at some point
Is Canada a playable nation in this game/will they ever be?
Sadly no :(
Damn, fair enough tho, thank you!
TRUCSON?!? It's pronounced Too-san, its a city in Arizona. BB's except for a handful in the beginning are named for states, of those exceptions was USS Kearsarge, and that was named after a Civil War era Union Screw frigate that hunted down Confederate blockade runners, flagged ships, and CSN ships.
“Toooo son airy zon yah” (it’s a What We Do In the Shadows reference)
The people in Boise pronounce it Boys-see or Boyce-see, while the rest of us pronounce it Boy-see :)
Ah ok so it is more of a two syllable word - gotcha. I did also after the video realise there’s the heretical third way of pronouncing it 🇫🇷
30:00 BWAHSEE
JK. That ain't it.
Do the pro-gamer move and conquer Mexico some time in the future.
That’s actually weirdly hard to do 😅
It'd be rad as hell if you managed it!
Oh lord, he pronounced it wrong. Boise is pronounced Boy-sea, not Boy Zee. Its origin is French, as when the first western explorers found the area, they exclaimed, "Le Bois! Le Bois!", or, the trees! the trees!. One of the reasons that the city is called the city of trees.
Hilarious - there’s other comments telling me it is in fact boy zee 😂 Er, let’s just assume I’m from New Jersey or something 🤣
