Fun Fact: Constantinople was originally named as Byzantium until Constantine renamed it to Nova Roma (New Rome). After Constantine’s death, it was renamed to Constantinople.
Also "the Byzantine Empire" is a modern term used by archeologists to differ between the eras. In fact the "Byzantines" called themselves "Romoi". They spoke mostly Greek (in some parts still latin), but they were the true continuation of the Roman Empire in the east, even after the fall of Rome.
I'll be interested to see if you come back to the "torpedo cruiser" hull. That would be fun to see! In general, this seems like it's a very interesting alternate history campaign. Looking forward to it!
It would be interesting if the Byzantines rediscovered their long lost Greek Fire technology and adapt it to their high explosive/incendiary munitions.
I think building ships that have different design styles makes sense for any moderate navy, you aren't bound to any particular ship designer, you are hiring ship designers internationally. Heck, the Japanese bought British designs, the turks all sorts of designs, the Russians tried to buy British, French, Italian and German boats. So build your OP french hulls for the fun of it.
"Pre - Pre- Dreadnaught," aka, Ironclad. Like Warrior. Which had no internal watertight subdivision besides the front and rear bulkheads for the citadel. So few bulkheads when you're behind the times is on brand. But it sure won't help survivability.
Never seen the belted three masted cruiser before and it's now one of my favorite 19th century hulls, also I love that the only minor left is Switzerland
Hope at some point you make a design out of the "experimental turret ship" BB hull, you can (at least in vanilla) fit main gun turrets on the centerline, and you get a frankly ludicrous casemate broadside armament of small guns. Ive had a lot of success with covering them with 2 inch guns

I am watching this new iteration of the game with interest. I do have to ask, though, can revolutions and breakaway nations still form? Only because I do feel that there is some good in having minor nations you can jockey for. They do provide a sort of balance to the game I feel is needed for a more... realistic diplomacy system. Byzantium as a nation I can see, and is a really cool concept, though I feel as though if you had Greece as an independent minor it could better shape a policy of "reuniting the old empire." By that notion it's really surprising to me that you aren't hated by anyone who ever claimed to be the true successor of Rome (i.e. Italy, Austria-Hungary, and Russia even 😂) Can't wait to see how this turns out.
Very interesting adding Byzantine in instead of just using the Ottomans. Started a new camp in DIP GG should be fun to play along... The UK is scary D: they ate all of Scandinavia by like 1893

I really like getting rid of all minor powers, At the moment in Vanilla I am close to just chucking the game. The Ottoman's are running amuck taking area after area with their army and there is noting you can do to stop them. Even at 100% army logistics they conquer an area in a 3-4 turns.

Interesting, the ramifications would be pretty major. No Pan-Slavism (at least a Russia centered version or Moscow as the third Rome), no Boogeyman in the form of the Ottoman Empire for much of the Renaissance through to the 19th Century. Also the implications that the two major centers of Islam are governed by non-Muslims. Would that keep their ire focused on the occupiers? Plenty of Emperors to name Battleships after, heck use some Western Roman ones for Battlecruisers. Can also farm 19th. Century Greece as well.
