John crying in the wheelchair is just so heartbreaking... Funfact: this is the second cliffhanger that ended with "Dad?" - Michael chatting in the computer with supposedly Walt at the end of S2E9 was the 1st.
It bothers me so much that he keeps calling him "Dad" as if he had been around since his childhood. Especially since everyone critizised Alex for referring to Ben as "Dad" as if she should know better. Poor John is so broken.
You saw Richard in Juliet's episode "Not in Portland". He was the one to recruit Juliet. What Matthew Fox was playing on the piano was Jack's theme which is first introduced here.
This episode rightfully won Terry O'Quinn an Emmy for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. Michael Emerson was also nominated in this category that year for this episode. LOST had won a bunch of Emmys (for music, editing, effects, directing, casting, and best drama series) for its 1st Season, but this was the first acting win. And it's super deserved! What an episode :D
This episode blew my mind and is one of my absolute favorites, so many great things in it: We finally see how John ended up in a wheelchair,Danielle sees Alex, John blows up the submarine and Jack’s face, Ben and Locke, the reveal what’s in the box. This is why LOST is prime entertainment. Your excitement, confusion, satisfaction was all great, thanks for sharing.
I know most people think Locke's actions are only about not wanting to leave himself, but I think it's more than that. He doesn't want ANYONE to leave, he believes they were all brought there for reasons that he doesn't understand yet, and he wants them to realize/fulfill their purpose. Some of the Locke/Jack convo's are fantastic, I think more important than some give them credit for. S1 White Rabbit: "This place is different...it's special. The others don't want to talk about it because it scares them, but we all know it, we all feel it. Is your white rabbit a hallucination? Probably. But...what if everything that happened here happened for a reason." S1 Finale: "Do you really think all this is an accident -- that we, a group of strangers survived, many of us with just superficial injuries? Do you think we crashed on this place by coincidence -- especially, this place? We were brought here for a purpose, for a reason, all of us. Each one of us was brought here for a reason."
Top 3 episode of the show IMO. The verbal chess match and simultaneous brain gymnastics competition between Locke & Ben in a number of episodes is pure perfection.
It always struck me how Locke always wants people to "say the words." He demands his father TELL him he's going to end it, he demanded that "Henry Gale" TELL him whether he pushed the button or not. It's one of the main ways he allows people to con him--"give me something to believe."
The back and forth shithousing between Locke and Ben is glorious isn’t it.. the whole show could just be those two trying to get one over on each other 😅
Even though it makes perfect sense in hindsight, my jaw DROPPED that moment his dad charges him and pushes him through the window, its quite jarring. And so heartbreaking. As if John hadn't suffered enough in his life up till then. It does help to make you understand his motives when he does these rather extreme things on the island.
@@darla896 their relationship is troublesome and complex, she's her own agenda but most of the times she means well (like a rebellious child with the parent)

It's a small thing, but somehow funny, probably the delivery by Terry O'Quinn. When the son comes to ask Locke about Anthony Cooper, and Locke thinks he is a salesman. I have a sign (no solicitors). It just makes me laugh every time.
I'm on my 3rd or 4th re-watch, man this was such a good episode and I so loved your reaction to it. It's hard for me to remember precisely what I thought the first time I saw this show, but I know I wasn't coming up with the theories you do. Even if sometimes you were a little off base, your mind was working on it hard. That's fun to watch.
Anthony F**KIN' Cooper... THAT MAN IS THE WORST OF THE WORST! 😡 "So, how is it that you think you know this Island better than I do?" - Ben "Because you're in the wheelchair, and I'm not" - Locke A MIC DROP MOMENT IF EVER THERE WAS ONE! 🎤
I really like this episode finally finding out how Locke became wheelchair bound. Jack and Juliet were going to leave and stinking Locke blew it up. Although I wasn’t holding out much hope because I figured Ben wouldn’t let them leave and would stop them somehow. I mostly feel so sorry for Juliet because she needs to leave the island and be with her sister who may have had a child a niece or nephew she’s missing out on. I think she said 3 years she’s been on the island. Then the crazy episode ending with Lockes dad. My reaction was about the same as yours when I first saw it. Like what the heck!
I feel stupid for just realizing how bad all the fathers of the main cast are. I knew some were bad but... Jack, Kate, Locke, Sawyer, Hurley, Sun, Claire, *EDITED* all horrible fathers. The only father we've seen who's been good is Jin's dad. Only other main cast member is Sahid and we never saw his parents. The writers and producers must have serious daddy issues. Edited one name. Realized it was a spoiler.
This is the best episode I've seen to date. Gave up watching the show at 3-6 after those ropey early episodes and the shows hiatus when originally aired. If it continues like this I'll wish I'd stuck with it!
I'm just glad you've reached the part of the series where we learn about the Others. Most fans seem to hold a negative view. However, I don't share that view. I actually prefer the Others over the the passengers of 815. Even Ben. Except Hurley. Hurley will always be my favorite. Desmond rounds out the top 3.
While I prefer most of the 815ers, I do love Ben, and there's no denying many of the 815ers did questionable/horrible things before the island, including murder & torture, and continue to do so throughout the show. Even Jack's list gets long by the end of show, and most consider him the main hero.
Definitely one of my favourite episodes! Considering that John was suffering from depression even before his dad came back into his life and subsequently pushed him out of a window, it must have been hell for him to learn he would spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair. No wonder he doesn't want to leave the island. You may want to brace yourself for the next episode though... it is a proper stinker!
you worked on more than one sub set? .. they're a pain in the ass to shoot in? ... What's your opinion of Das Boot? A reaction to Das Boot (TV series or movie) would be interesting. (Especially in the current era of subs crashing into underwater mountains)
Yeah, movie reactions (just irregularly now and then - as his time allows) would be a great addition to Neil's channel. And "Das Boot" would definitely be worth it. But I'd recommend the Director's Cut and to watch it originally in German with subtitles. Also as Neil seems to enjoy a mini-series (Squid Game) as well, I'd love to see him react to the best mini-series ever... Chernobyl
Sun's father is a terrible man, but he has never stolen his own child's kidney or pushed her out of an 8 storey window. Looking at him purely in terms of his role as a father, he's nowhere near as bad as Anthony Cooper.

The chemistry between Terry O’Quinn and Michael Emerson is off the charts in this episode.
both such amazing dramatic actors.
Yup, some of my fav interactions/scenes of the entire show. There's a reason they both had acting nominations/wins.

I started choking on my food when I first saw that scene. It was so sudden lol
Terry O'Quinn is one of those guys who age like a fine wine.
It's heartbreaking how no one ever helped/was worried about Jack in 3 seasons, except Kate. Buy she always chooses the wrong time to help
I give Kate credit for continuing to believe in Jack's trustworthiness.
How no one else notices that Kate selfishly trying to “help Jack” when told not to did the opposite of helping yet again-
