If a person's hunger correlates to low blood sugar (it doesn't in most cases), that can easily (scientifically) explain the laughing. With hypoglycemia, the first symptoms a person experiences are usually 'brain'-related as the brain is the organ that uses sugar the most and the first to 'notice' a lack of it. Mild, transient hypoglycemia often causes a bit of muddled-thinking and a person can seem a bit loopy or drunk (while not actually drunk, I wouldn't advise driving). Everyone experiences a different constellation of symptoms with low-ish blood sugar; some are more sensitive to it. Some people's lips tingle, some people get itchy palms, etc. Most people's bodies quickly correct this low by converting stored glycogen to glucose from various organs (mostly the liver) -- it's like the emergency glucose reserves. These emergency reserves can be partially depleted if not enough caloric intake in the past few days relative to activity (or if someone is on an alcohol-fueled bender) making a person more susceptible to low-ish blood sugar. Not a major cause for concern. Keep juice-boxes on hand for hikes if this happens. And with all the daily back to back hiking, be sure and have fair-sized dinners to restock the reserves. That water, though. Unreal.
Wow thanks for the detailed explanation. It’s usually laughter and loopy behavior and then there’s a a dip in energy. Once the goofiness comes on we try to grab a snack asap. Carrying juice boxes around is a good idea. Matches the behavior too haha.
