FunFact: The police officers are responsible for all buildings, rooms and properties that are under the administration of the Bundestag. The police at the German Bundestag protect the smallest police district in Germany. Through them, the President of the German Bundestag exercises the police powers vested in him under Article 40(2) of the Basic Law in the buildings and on the grounds of the Bundestag.
In 2005 "Bundesgrenzschutz" (Federal Border Control) and "Bahnpolizei" (Railway Police) were combined to form the new "Bundespolizei". Fighting "normal" crimes is the job of the State police, not the Bundespolizei, they are only for crimes in relation to Border control, Railway traffic or air traffic
Every German state has its own police force. Those do most of the policing. The Federal Police has only limited responsibilities by comparison, but some special tasks (air traffic security, rail traffic security, border controls) reserved to it and some tasks as backup for state police forces (riot police, anti-terror squads). Criminal investigations on the federal level are done by the Bundeskriminalamt (roughly Federal Bureau of Investigation), which is also subordinated to the Federal Minstry of the Interior, but not formally part of the Bundespolizei. And there is also the German Federal Parliament Police (Polizei beim Deutschen Bundestag), subordinated to the president of the Bundestag and responsible for the security of the parliament and its members, but not part of the Bundespolizei and not subordinated to any Federal Ministry or other executive power.
Other Federal armed civilian office is Zoll of Finance Ministery. Armed forces of states in addition to Landespolizei is also Justice/ Prison Personal and some Personal of Forrest Service.
I suppose you overestimate our federals. Germany is a federal state. Home affairs is in the realm of our states. Their mutual work is coordinated by the federal criminal police. The realm of Federal Police is safety of transportation like airports , the railway system and control of illegal working labour. They play no role in ordinary life. Their position was improved when the european frontiers were more or less demolished. So they became some sort of border police as well.
In normal life, it plays a role because the Federal Police operates 18 rescue helicopters at 12 locations out of 88 locations in Germany which fly directly in the rescue service. So you can say that they play a role in normal life.

@@Arch_AngelusIn some sense, besides their specific tasks at the border, at airports and the railway system, protecting parts of the government and so on, they act as a resource the state police can draw on. In that sense, they act a little bit like the National Guard in the United States (of course, equipped like police forces not like the military as it it’s the case with the National Guard, and being federal and not state-based). The German Federal Police are also a separate organisation from the Federal Criminal Police Office which is the federal investigative police agency of Germany. The latter is also limited in what it can investigate. Apart from certain national and international threats, it has to be invited by a state prosecutor to take over an investigation.
