  • I found this model on thingiverse and had to give it a try. Almost 4 rolls of filament later and the result is amazing! If you are going to print one, budget for 5kg of filament, just to be sure!

      Oh wow! Great work!
      This setup works really well. I do get some pass through when I open the blast gate right up. Either this needs to be done in a 6” inlet with bigger body or I need two in parallel.

    Great job all around. I don't have space in my shop for horizontal dust collection, but I'm building a similar cabinet to house my shop vac for noise reduction. I have the same latches and really like them; they're effective and cheap.
    The system seems to be working for you, that's great. The more dust collected the better.

      Pre separating from the jointer/planer is a must!
      I thought of an Oneida 4” but had more horizontal than vertical room in this case….

    I watched the Under Dunn video some time back and within a few hours had also drawn up a version to 3D print, though as yet it has not yet happened. Perhaps it is finally time.

    Very interesting, I also made a horizontal dust collector. I want two pairs to work in parallel. You've given me a great idea for a container. You can also see these two dust collectors in my videos.

    Wouldn’t the bags(when empty) be sucking up toward the separator and not letting the dust drop straight into the bins ?

      Exactly. Not perfect by any means but done the way I like it. My dust collector is too powerful for just one unit. I get a little too much bypass. I can always just print another!!

    Looks great. How large is the collecting tube diameter you use, 4"? I'm looking for a 6" design 'cause I think these cannot just be scaled linearly....?

    I've watched a lot of Under Dunn's stuff. I really enjoy his channel about his automobile collection. He is in process of EV swapping an Escape.
    Havent watched much of your stuff lately, hope you have been doing well. This is an interesting video. I am impressed you were able to 3D print this thing!

    hello such a great job. SHOUT OUT :). Under dunn and You. I've been dreaming of this dust separator. what brand did u use 3d printer? how much time it takes to print?

      It was a good week and a half of printing on an old slow cr10s pro v2. I’m sure it would be faster with my voron now.
      I was pretty nervous on the turbine part as it was a lot of filament!!!!

    This is, of course, a copy of the Harvey G700. Or, rather, it is a copy of a copy- I recognize the version. Unfortunately there is a serious error in this version- the fine dust exhaust needs to be radial to the outside of the tube. The discontinuity on this design spoils the laminar flow of the material, greatly reducing the collection ability. If you measure how much gets through to your filter you will find it is actually inferior to a standard cyclone.

      @@pauna7 No, it is a matter of design. The flow of fine dust around the inside of the tube needs to be able to exit is a straight (tangential) manner- angles at this point destroy the flow. For a great view of the form required, see ruclips.net/video/awfjcu_d7po/видео.html This is a completely different design, but you can see how the dust port is tangential to the tube. I believe this to be a crucial design matter, and will radically affect performance.

      Is it clear now. My manifold is the same as the g700 manifold in details and dimensions. I tried to be as accurate as possible. I just couldn't keep trying to perfect it.

      This was my design. I'm interested to try the version that keeps the laminar flow. I was using the video of the g700 when I created it and if I remember correctly it didn't keep the laminar flow. That's why I used this exit design. I only ever tried one design so I never compared it to your suggestion.

      @@iporty Fluid flow dynamics are complex. Even commercial designs are subject to considerable testing, to optimize them. However, smooth radial exit is crucial to operation.

    How much filament did this take?

      Looking back it was just under 2kg for the clear parts, almost 1 kg for the center turbine part, and another kg for sure for the other parts.
      I think you could get away with 4 kg but 5 to be sure in case of any oopsies….
      PETG appears to be optimal.

      Yup, that was the price I paid locally here in Canad BEFORE the price went up. Before taxes they are close to $9k now. Dang prime ministers sock tax…

    You'd be ahead of the game with the Lee Valley separator if you didn't have so much hose. Do you realize how inefficient that set up is? Not to mention the several loops, not bends loops! As seen your dust extraction is at 50% with all that nonsense. Short runs, never direct 90°, (2) 45° are better.

      My issue was not the ability to suck things up, the issue was that nothing stayed in the can. Basically it bypassed the lee valley hood and went through to the main collector.

    Please try to do some basic editing next time, video was WAY too long. Also, at 22:50 it sure looks to me like the size of the chips in both bins is roughly the same. So I think the "fine dust" claim is dubious.

      Yeah, just kinda threw this together at the last minute. I have found that full suction from the dust collector just defeats the separation but still diverts a huge portion of planar chips from my main collector.
