  • With another shooting season over, vast tracts of land open up for the ferreting community. Simon saw this as the perfect opportunity to get Ed and Patrick out of the office and into Simon's for the day. Shooting bolting rabbits over ferrets can be as much a mental discipline as much as a physical one. Patrick has done this before but this was to be Ed's first day on the warrens. Safety was paramount as bolting rabbits, errant ferrets and people moving about has the ability to unnerve the safest of shots.
Simon was only using five ferrets in these large warrens in a bid to trickle out the bolting rabbits as opposed to having one mass bolt of two or more rabbits. This would give the guns a better chance of success. Patrick and ed both had plenty of shooting, as did Simon and at the end of the day a couple of carriers full marked the end to a fantastic day in Essex.

It looked like a lot of fun, but then you have to worry about picking out BB's.

I think it's time to support an air gun factory to produce a really good and useful air rifle shotgun. Just my idea, after watching this good video of rabbit hunting.

For me something is missing from this Video, that's quietness, nets, perhaps dogs and balance with nature.
Ferreting is an earthly sport, connected with the ground, the harmonious balance between the ferrets, the handler and the alert dog, mudded hands and knees from being down with the soil, ferret and rabbit and the ultimate clean 'unshotted' dispatch of the rabbit and apart from the rabbits taken, no trace of man's impact left.
With the guns balance is missing, ferrets are agitated and act irrationally because of the blasting guns, their ears and body stressed by somthing they're not acustomed to, lead is left in the ground, the embrace of the earth and essence of ferreting is missed by the remotly operating gun men.
Yes your channel is called shooting times but i feel guns arent compatible with ferreting and are unnecessary in this situation.
I do generally appreciate your films they are very well done.
    All the best with it.

Simon Whitehead. Watching the video and listening to the diologue at the end that doesn't really come across, but through watching other videos you've produced, I know where your passion and love lies, it's also clear where the shooters passion is too, with the shooting. You did say it's more efficient with dogs and nets, so its clearly something you wouldn't normally do, It's clear anyway without experiencing guns opperating instead of nets.
It's perhaps a new stimulus for the watcher, it was also entertaining for the shooters and you took away from it what you learned.
I was just a bit disheartened to see ferreting and mostly the ferrets themselves invaded by the guns, for whatever the reason it happened.
