  • After the new Class 230s trains entered service on the Mid-Wirral or Borderlands Line, we took a journey to the edge of the peninsula to see what they are like.
    After waiting a few months to cover this new transport host we were hoping to avoid any teething problems that are realistically inevitable, how ever this pre-planning did not work.

    Personally, I'd prefer the Borderlands line to be a regular (every 15 minutes) Merseyrail Service, with additional stations such as Woodchuch, Noctorum and Beechwood. I've longed for that all my life. But it's never been done.

    Rode one yesterday on my way back to Liverpool from Wrexham and because it was delayed by half an hour (hardly surprised tho given the units' poor track record), it actually ran non-stop to Bidston from Wrexham General which was interesting. Good thing I was travelling end-to-end anyway, but it must have been super annoying to those who needed to get to one of the intermediate stops en-route. Otherwise, they're nice units for what they do and I especially love how quiet they were inside to the point where you can't tell it was diesel powered.

    The Borderlands Line has a proposed Deeside station. If built this should be the interchange station between Merseyrail 777s and the Welsh 230s, where they both terminate. For now battery 777s can terminate at Heswall, as that is inside the Liverpool City Region and easy to form a termination point - Neston is on an embankment. Heswall is also under the remit of the metro-mayor while Neston is in West Cheshire, so politically easy to get Heswall, Upton and Bidston direct central Birkenhead and Liverpool services.
    Taking Merseyrail Class 777s to Wrexham is a daft idea as south of Deeside only 2 train per hour are permitted because for freight movements. Liverpool City Region want Merseyrail to be a walk up service, which means 15 minute services (no timetable needed). So 4 into 2 does not go. Also most of the Borderlands Line is inside Wales as are most stations. Why should the Liverpool City Region pay for a metro in Wales when these trains can be used inside the region, of which there are many cases to introduce rail on redundant trackbeds and tunnels.

    I’ve seen a few of these sitting Birkenhead North depot when I’m travelling to work on the old rolling-stock. So are you saying these are refitted carriages? I read the new rolling-stock we’re getting on the Wirral line was manufactured in Switzerland.

      The Wirral line trains are the new ones built in Switzerland. But the bidston to Wrexham trains like the one in the video were ex London underground trains and have be refitted by a company called viva rail.

    Sad that Vivarail isn’t there anymore but the Class 230s and Class 484s are still going. Will Vivarail ever return and to continue on converting the old former London Underground D78 Stocks that would be useful for branch line services.
    And perhaps to restart using the London Northwestern Railway Class 230s on the Marston Vale Line. And GWR to start introducing the battery powered Class 230 on the West Ealing-Greenford line.

    • @ianmcclavin
      @ianmcclavin Год назад +1

      Yes, I hope they have better long term success with these units on The Wirral than they had on the Marston Vale Line. There's still currently no train service at all there, only hourly replacement buses. They're now talking about train services starting to resume there in August, peaks only to begin with, and with Class 150's, not these.
