When he weighed in on Tony Blair and the Iraq War, he wasn't just some bleeting celebrity giving fashionable soundbytes, he was informed, thoroughly researched, intelligent and had the courage of his convictoins. Tim Sebastian pushed him on HardTalk to be more than a pop star and he absolutely shone, and proved a better and more worthwhile critic than most journalists. Genuinely one of the good guys.
