His muscles are different from the average person. It's been a scientifically proven that some people's muscles just react different and can provide more Force and speed and leaping ability
He was one of my favourite athletes growing up - sharing a first name and an event with him, just seemed quite relatable. And he never had airs and graces, just really down to earth. The Goteburg competition is quite an indelible memory (or rather, his jumps were). Defying gravity and seemingly floating down the runway with each section. The closest I've ever seen to a human skipping stone....
Yeah it's crazy to think that literally every single movement of his body is intentional and necessary for these jumps. There have probably been a lot more athletic triple jumpers than him but the strength and dexterity for those minute mid air movements that help him carry speed all the way until the end... that's what got him these WRs
Yeah, I usually work in metric but somehow saying '60ft' made my brain restart. That is a hell of a long way to jump. I can't remember my numbers from school and I know longjump is different. I'd win some years, but I suspect it was more like 5m than 18.
Eh. Having met the guy, and having met NFL players that smash this out of the park. The reason this world record is never broken is well. The people competing aren't real athletes.
@@Johnboysmudge I was a triple jumper and I jumped 51"11 inches I thought that was a great jump, but over 60ft is insane! I don't people understand the mechanics of basically skipping yourself over a flat pavement like a rock on water. The pounding is equivalent to 10000 pounds of pressure for the hop skip jump technique. You have to have a strong mid core to maintain the phases and not to mention leg strength. The long jump is a more all out sprint and jump but the triple requires more technique.
Bloody Legend this guy! I watched when I was 11 years old when he got gold, I still remember his celebration like it was yesterday. I still can't believe its not been beaten to this day. Considering the different type of athletes we have now! Insane
I was a triple jumper too (faaar from mr Edwards!) and I believe that his jump is completely unreal: first his speed is unbelievable, and controlling your jump at that speed is impossible. Second the way he transfer the speed at every jump is flawless, his timing is perfect, he touches the floor only the necessary amount of time (milliseconds). Third his equilibrium is perfect, look at his head and his chin, that let him to reach the farthest he could when reach the sand. Even the end of the jump is perfect! I’ll never be tired of seen this video.
i watched these jumps live and nothing was same again as a lil kid... not to lose any momentum [as less as possible] between leaps is surreal. for almost 30 years i have never seen a gentle-man athlete as him.
His technique, his track speed(100m in 10.48 apparently) experience he’d gained by then, and undoubtedly a great work ethic all combined to reach athletic greatness.
Not just this one.the mens world record long jump has stood since 1991 mike powell.the high jump by a cuban javier sotomayor and flo jo holds the womens 100ms since the late80s

There is also Jan Železný, who threw javelin so far, noone has yet been close to him. (except one throw last year, which still was almost one meter short)
Unreal. He looked like a wind up doll: graceful, intensely calculated and fiercely confident, precise execution of every second of that jump. I watched this, just mesmerised by how that jump looked. Wow.
Each phase is so even, carrying his speed generally flat through the first two phase, hop and step and then exploding trading that speed for height carrying him deep into the pit. Amazing technique partnering with blazing speed.

@@bogdanleshenko7149Nope. Just have any black longjumper or top sprinter train for a few years at the triple jump. Thank you for sharing
When you watch it in slow Mo there's no vibration visible throughout his body on touch down his technique was really pure perfection and rare guess that's why!?
He seems to somehow create extra momentum out of thin air when he's about to land during the hop phase. Of course the landings are also perfect. Great athlete.
On that wind aided jump, I noticed that he kind of kicks that lead leg forward while he's at the top of his, like he's using his foot to pull himself forward even more.
Nope,, his flow technique and speed make this a very hard 1 to beat... your more likely to see Usain bolts record broke way way way before this piece of art ever gets broken.
Yes, when titles say, “it will nevr hpen again” the writer would like you to believe the idea of complacency/ lies. They should feel shame for trying to “bait” the viewer at all costs to the video.
I couldn’t comprehend 18.43 meters immediately, so I converted it to feet. Oh my goodness, that means that each of his strides are just over 20 feet per stride. A basketball goal is ten feet up into the air. So, if you lay two basketball goals down on the ground and end to end, then you can marvel at the length of his strides. Gee whiz, I’m sure there are some wild cats saying…what??? Btw, his form is flawless. You can scrub the video back and forth during his jumps and there’s no noticeable wobbling, just smooth floating. Fantastic athlete!
This brought back a memory of watching Edwards jump the 18.29 world record in the second round. The BBC commentator at the time said something along the lines of 18.29! That's 60 feet and one quarter of an inch!
I lived next door to Jonathan in 1994, when he was still relatively unknown and living in Newcastle. He was a completely normal, unassuming & friendly bloke and would chat for a minute or two when we bumped into each other. At the time, he wouldn't compete on Sundays, as he's a committed Christian. Who knew a few months later he'd be world record holder? Couldn't have happened to a nicer bloke.
I remember seeing him on telly a few times being interviewed and the great man is DEEPLY religious....it got me thinking if there is a big man upstairs that big hand came down and lifted him further up that sand.
Nope, not any more. He saw reason in 2012 and now has to do without God. I wish Christians would stop claiming him - not that I'm saying you are - as one of "their own". "I don't miss my faith. In many ways I feel more settled and happier in myself without it." said Edwards. Rhetorical question: how do you view him now?
Yep. IF the wind had been a legal 2.0 for that jump, it still would have sailed past 18.30. not the world record, but still arguably the greatest jump of all time. Even his two world records was not QUITE as technically perfect as Lille - Only TJ who has got near technically for me was Christian Taylor in his absolute peak - he's the only one who for a period looked in that league that might challenge the record, and in the end, wear and tear beat him down. whereas the technique simply didn't seem to wear Edwards the way it does others, like his knees and ankles were pure rubber
Fantastic. My brother was a pretty good triple jumper.....he did a triple jump of 50 feet in high school.....I checked and Edward’s 18.29 meters is a little over 60 feet...just amazing. 😱.

@@e2rqey hes a credit to the sport, and transitioned seamlessly in commentary. He was faster over 30M than Linford Christie was at the time..Just one part of the elements needed to be the greatest of all time.
I don't get why his jump didn't count in the 18.43?
@@beatndagutta there is a specific line it starts at that is marked. They are supposed to try to start their jump as close to the line as possible. He just jumped pretty early.
@@beatndagutta He had a 2.4 tailwind. For record purposes it can't be ratified since the allowable limit it 2.0.
Damn how strong is his legs. Imagine moving at that speed and landing on one leg. My whole leg would shatter.
The force of landing for the triple jump is crazy. Researchers have found that triple jumpers leg bones become much denser due to pounding they take.
His muscles are different from the average person. It's been a scientifically proven that some people's muscles just react different and can provide more Force and speed and leaping ability
Lol yooo mr glass
@@krisharkleroad8 So that's why Mario looks like a squished human being.
@@krisharkleroad8 I recall he used to get ankle injuries later on in his career.
And just look at the leg power that propels him forth each time a foot lands. Absolutely stunning.
His mid air momentum and positioning is incredible.
Yeah it's crazy to think that literally every single movement of his body is intentional and necessary for these jumps. There have probably been a lot more athletic triple jumpers than him but the strength and dexterity for those minute mid air movements that help him carry speed all the way until the end... that's what got him these WRs
How far is that in feet? We don’t use the metric system in the US.
Not being into athletics myself it’s still very hard not to be impressed by such achievements of the man.
@@dylansmith1180 which NFL player could jump more than 18m?, I'm dying to know this! 😄
@@dylansmith1180 Let’s see you break it. If you don’t like the sport then why are you here? Which NFL player can triple jump 60 feet btw? Name? Date?
I had the chance to experience his world record live :D
Me as well. This will go down as one of the top 3 WRs I've ever seen in person.
@@RAYGUNWOD My top#1 is Bekele's 10000m WR, and yours ?
@@KarLKoX That's really cool if you got to witness that.
The only WR I’ve seen in person was in the 800m Olympic final in London 2012. That evening is up there with the best ones of my life.
@@KrispigKarp I was there too !
I saw a lot of other WR like that of Usain Bolt.
Bloody Legend this guy! I watched when I was 11 years old when he got gold, I still remember his celebration like it was yesterday. I still can't believe its not been beaten to this day. Considering the different type of athletes we have now! Insane
That was part of a golden age for GB athletics. Full of extraordinary personalities and characters.
I remember watching this as a kid with my grandparents, never in my life would I have imagined that record to still hold to this day.
Dang, man's technique is flawless. And no, I am not in athletics myself but look how he goes in those slow-mo shots. Amazing performance.
I think those in Athletics also call it flawless.
Absolutely amazing! The feats that the human body can achieve is crazy.
Yes and with both feet to boot.
i watched these jumps live and nothing was same again as a lil kid... not to lose any momentum [as less as possible] between leaps is surreal. for almost 30 years i have never seen a gentle-man athlete as him.
His technique, his track speed(100m in 10.48 apparently) experience he’d gained by then, and undoubtedly a great work ethic all combined to reach athletic greatness.
It's amazing that with all the progress in training, leading to new world records all the time, that this one still stands.
As Usain Bolt, I really think that genetics makes all the difference between him and other
Not just this one.the mens world record long jump has stood since 1991 mike powell.the high jump by a cuban javier sotomayor and flo jo holds the womens 100ms since the late80s

Eternal Jonathan Edwards! One of my "sports-Heroes", i was just a kid in '95. but i remember everything about that day, and that 18.29m triple jump! I was so happy!
There is also Jan Železný, who threw javelin so far, noone has yet been close to him. (except one throw last year, which still was almost one meter short)
He was great fun to watch. Superb technique as well.
don't they change the javelin mass/shape or something?
@@blu3_enjoy yes, but that throw was after the change.
@@blu3_enjoy They did change it, so that record would probably never be broken
And women high-jump of Stefka Kostadinova of 209 which is now I believe more than 30 years old
Amazing technique partnering with blazing speed.
the skip section just seems to defie gravity the long pause then the power jump, beautiful, what a achevment still standing all these years later, one of those god moments ,,xxthanks 4 sharing xx
I love videos about a record that will never be broken that don't explain why it'll never be broken.
try to jump for 18+ meters. People tried for 25 years and could not. Most likely, this record will stand for much longer
@@bogdanleshenko7149 Improvements in sports science will inevitably cause it to be broken
@@Chris-zi4mo shoes*
Where in the video did it say it would never be broken?
@@bogdanleshenko7149Nope. Just have any black longjumper or top sprinter train for a few years at the triple jump. The only reason a white guy can have a triple jump WR is because it's an obscure event.
If a top level 100m sprinter or long jumper trained for the triple jump, they would beat Edwards WR. It would be inevitable.
Triple jump is so satisfying to watch especially when the phases are just soooo perfect.😩💦👌🔥
Triple jump in general just amazes me. They're such powerful athletes!
The people like this that are just this good at this level just make thier craft look so....normal.
My knees cannot watch triple jumping comfortably.
Jonathan looks effort less in his world record jumps. What I like about triple jump is that you have to rebound. Very special.
I used to do triple jump. I was terrible at it but it was fun
TRP. Many thanks for yet another well researched and very well presented expose. The quality of your "show" is absolutely first rate. Thanks again. Cheers.
They are so good. I watched his Usain Bolt video because of Bolt's shear mass appeal put the video in my recommended, but I stayed because how well TRP conveys the fascinating history of track and field which is something I had never given any thought to.
Incredible leaps + a warm gracious smile.. you can't beat that smile after every jump.
I remember him breaking that record - they spoke about it on Newsround on CBBC. He has always seemed like a really nice bloke too.
ellie crisell
The most effortless-looking world record performance. If the triple jump had style points, like ski jumping has, Edwards would have gotten a (perfect) 5x20
The greatest Triple Jump technique of all time. 3 phases of perfection.
10.48secs 100m pb. Technically perfect for sprinting and jumping. Nice guy too. The triple jump is hard 😢discipline to master, but he sure found his event with the triple. Without a change of attitude, he wouldn’t have achieved his athletic goals. The decision to compete on any week day was the turning point. Inspired me to compete at county school-boy level. Thank you for sharing
When you watch it in slow Mo there's no vibration visible throughout his body on touch down his technique was really pure perfection and rare guess that's why!?
I could watch those jumps over and over again...simply majestic and remember watching them live.
god allowed that on earth for our amazement. still unbelievable to this day.
I was there in Gothenburg just in front of the triple jump. It was an amazing day.
The beauty of enduring human spirit stretching the limits of possibilities. Thanks for this video.
This is when you can call yourself a LEGEND.
Phenomenal athlete with terrific speed and perfect form.
I watched it live on the TV years ago his is a true Legend and the nicest person you could meet
Remember this, as it was yesterday... Looked like he was taking off for the moon... Gobsmacked...
this guy is making reality of my dreams, bounding effortlessly almost "flying".
Don’t say that it’ll never be broken. It’s only a matter of time before someone who is overly dedicated to beat his record actually pulls it off.
hope he trains a black athlete.
I don't think dedication is the only factor. That's insulting all long jumpers. Genetics my man
Nope,, his flow technique and speed make this a very hard 1 to beat... your more likely to see Usain bolts record broke way way way before this piece of art ever gets broken.
Yes, when titles say, “it will nevr hpen again” the writer would like you to believe the idea of complacency/ lies. They should feel shame for trying to “bait” the viewer at all costs to the video.
the title is for clickbait obviously.
He was majestic in his victory's Just shrugged, And smiled. He should be TV host and more popular now as when he was then. Deserved more fame
He didn’t want it, he lives a quiet life in one of Englands most beautiful places, he’s a lovely man often seen out on his bike just enjoying life.
Can’t be a more satisfying sight than edwards hopping , skipping and jumping ! Even his running is graceful .
A true great of British athletes. In my opinion he's up there with Steve Ovett, Sebastian Coe and Daley Thompson.
and Eddie the Eagle!
The greatest of them all in many ways , up there with Bolt, Beamon and a few others that took their
event to another level .
Met him last week at the open, lovely bloke he's was a steward....can't believe it was 27 years ago...god I'm old
Thats how far she jumps when she jumps to conclusions.
Ain't that the truth.
I remember watching this live, couldn't believe it when he hit that
I was so proud of my 40 feet triple jump in HS, huge props to this guy
Maybe if you would have stuck with it you could have beat him. We’ll never know for sure, but you’re probably not going to now with that attitude!
This brought back a memory of watching Edwards jump the 18.29 world record in the second round. The BBC commentator at the time said something along the lines of 18.29! That's 60 feet and one quarter of an inch!
i was 48-49! hes going 60ft? 🙇
I just managed a fraction under 40ft at 16 yrs old!
This guy isn't celebrated enough. Great and legendary feat!
I mainly admired his smile when he broke his own record and his graceful gesture on the podium. Seems also a decent and humble human been.
Jimmy Savile was knighted in 1990, yet Jonathan Edwards had never been knighted.
Bonkers.
I saw it live, good memories
greatest british sportsman of all time. no quibbles - just is.
I have absolutely no clue about jumping but this technique looks flawless. Especially when you watch him in slo-mo.
One of the best moments in track and field. Hopefully this years March Madness can be as great

@@georgefindlay1982 He lost his faith in 2012 and no longer believes in God.
Jonathan Edwards: from theologian to a track star. Mans is just built different
Perfect synchronicity and form. Wow!
The float and technical element in his step phase of the 18:43 jump was extraordinary 🔥🔥🔥. The is poetry in motion, when I think of the quote!
18.28 is exactly 60 ft which was always the magic number when I was younger.
I'm an old boy and remember watching this live! My parents were stunned.
