MTV was heaven for a teenager in the 90s! Getting home from school and relaxing and exploring what's out there in the exciting world of music. If only there was something like this now!
These were the days. Visually and musically it is superior to current crap MTV . It was captivating, Vjs played what they liked and not what corporations ordered them too, everything was simply better. Current MTV is so so bad It is a shell of once glorious TV
What a nostalgia trip. 93-97 was my MTV Europe era . Such wonderful memories : the music , the presenters , Most Wanted , even the promos . The rot set in in 97 for various reasons (the loss of Ray Cokes and numerous other long term presenters , the split into national channels , the move away from rock and indie music) but it was a great ride while it lasted.
For me MTV Europe was at its absolute best in 1989-90 with VJ's Maiken Wexo, Kristine Backer, Pip Dann, Steve Blame - it was definitely the coolest, most European feeling then. It got really commercialised by the mid 90s although Hugo and Enrico were cool!
MTV Europe was encrypted in Eurocrypt II on ASTRA 1 from July 1, 1995. With THE 140€ decoder you could only decode VERY few channels. S-VHS cassettes were expensive, resulting in a rather minimalist MTV archive from 1991 until June 1995.
I remember a show back in1994 on MTV Europe called Amore. It was a great R n B music show. MTV Europe used to have some great docu type shows. The MTV Europe awards also used to huge back in the mid 90's. No one really cares about them now
This year, MTV Europe will have 35 years. Unfortunately, there's not feed of the first hours of MTV Europe unlike MTV US and MTV Latin America (even it surprised to me of how the MTV Europe aesthetics influented to MTV Latin America in their early years).
Oh the memories.my music taste was made in the 90s watching mtv europe...loved mtv party zone especially.always found ray cokes annoying but pip dann was so beautiful 😍
Incredible sequence ! Love it, great souvenir, some images from the video of Planet Caravan/Pantera for sure (the exploding seeds), some from Future Sound of London videos (esp. Lifeforms and My Kingdom) - check "The Future Sound of London - MTV 1996" on RUclips, at 16:00 or so, you'll like it!
Can anyone remember if Rik Mayall and Ade Edmondson had anything to do with the MTV Europe Launch? I remember some interview they did with Ian Gillan from Deep Purple and have never found any record of it. If anyone reading this remembers it as well, please could you just let me know as I'm sure I didn't imagine it, and it's been bugging me for years. Cheers
too bad, it isnt marked inside video, which is which. This seems pretty chaotic to watch. I would like to know, at what I am looking at particular time. Also the year.
People say that youtube etc is responsible for the fall of MTV but it was already a reality-infested shell of its former self long before RUclips and video streaming even existed. The real reason is that the heads at Viacom didn't and don't want kids emotionally investing or being interested in music at all anymore.
The VJs were ace and competent to the point of there never being a peformance hiccup of any kind. Seriously, every line feels like it had been rehearsed a thousand times.

Besides the music, what I really miss about early 90's MTV are the cool "cutscenes" in between videos.
