"Fat Families" - a UK weight loss show hosted by Steve Miller - ran for only two seasons and will forever be remembered for its absolutely savage amount of fat shaming. It was released in 2010, so it wasn't that long ago. This is my review of S01E01 - "The Cuffs", mainly featuring Tarnya. Tarnya has a really great story, a positive outlook, and exhibits many of the factors for a successful behaviour change attempt.
While the fat shaming is crude, the behaviour change approaches implemented by host Steve Miller are actually some of the best I've seen in any of these UK weight loss shows. I had a lot of fun making this one!

But I remember, a long time ago, watching crime shows and the narrator would just walk towards the camera or just walk while talking and I'm like, "Where are you going?" because the narrator never reaches their destination. 💀

    • @GudetamaSit
      @GudetamaSit 7 месяцев назад +74

That's honestly what I see body positivity is. It's not handwaving away the issues that come along with obesity, but hating yourself/insulting others doesn't help it any. That often leads into crash diets, which leads to binging, leading to no long-term weight loss. Best to take it slow and steady, become healthier incrementally and learn not to hate yourself in the meantime.
19 here, hoping I can get myself healthier soon.

I have a scar across my face. Plastic surgery helped--a lot--but it's still there and nothing will ever get rid of it. Most people tell me they don't notice, but I assume it's the Tilbury makeup I use, because that stuff is a miracle and you can't tell I'm wearing it.
I'm deeply offended that the fatties stole body positivity and body acceptance from those of us who really needed it. My father used to call me ugly, with the consequence that I'm a dysmorphic gym rat who, at the age of 55, can't look into a mirror (but can break you over his knee).

As over the top and crazy as it looks, this was the show I picked up some of my first good tips to lose weight from. Yes, they kinda go crazy with the whole ‘tough love’ concept, but they actually did have some sound advice in each episode. AND I love that the show does focus on health. They did not try to make their guests ‘hot’ or lose as much weight as possible asap. It was like, hey, lose SOME weight and see how good you will feel.

This so much. I've lost "only" 10 kilos so far - but I've done some working out so I might've lost more in terms of fat, and gained a good amount of muscle - out of the 40-ish kilos I need to lose in total, and I already feel so much better. I feel like I can breathe properly again, walking uphill isn't as much of a struggle anymore, and I feel better mentally as well. For anyone on the fence about getting around to just exercising, I can so much recommend just doing that as well, it feels amazing.

Also this kind of banter is very British humor. It's by far not as "mean" as people from North America would think. Brits can be very blunt about stuff, yet don't intend to tear down others. It's more like jokingly insulting a friend.

You could say a toddler is trundling happily along on his trike (tricycle)...

It means moving along steadily, maybe in an idiosyncratic way.

I think that Steve's greatest redeeming trait is that he comes across as completely genuine in his mission and desire to help others, despite his rather acidous demeanour. I have always prefered this type of people: you can be unpleasantly honest as long as I know you mean well. Otherwise we wouldn't even bother to talk to you..😂 I'll never forget when my aunt bought me some clothes for b-day, after she hadn't seen me in quite some time during which I gained around 5kilos. I used to watch youtube everytime I ate. I couldn't eat without watching a video cuz I'd get so bored. I cold turkey quit doing that. I only ate in the kitchen looking at and hearing only my food and nothing else. This made me only eat when I'm hungry. Because who wants to sit in the kitchen do absolutely nothing but eat? I was sooo bored but also VERY conscious of my food. The taste of every single bite! I wondered how in the hell I could pile a whole lot of food in my plate and finish it all by the time I watched a 15 min video. I get so full and so bored by the half of it and just say "ugh, I'll eat the rest later. I just wanna go look at my phone or do literally anything else."
I noticed I was a pickier eater than I thought I was. I noticed some food give me inflammation and diarrhea so now I don't eat them. And my gut health is wayyy better for it. I feel more clean? I used to love chips but now the thought of eating some and getting my fingers smell like sweaty socks for days feels gross. I tell myself maybe later. I try not to harshly restrict anything but I eat less processed food and more protein. I heard protein helps ypu keep full for longer and I'm sure I could eat some more. I feel wayyy LESS GASSY and I get less diarrhea. I feel more fit. I don't feel so sluggish as much anymore. It's been 2 months and I hope to keep it for life. because all I do is literrally just pay attention to what I'm eating. I awoid screens. That's all.

Quickly changing between being abhorrent and being heartfelt is sooo common here. As a 14 year old girl that lost 20kg (from 80-60) in the last 4,5 months I find your videos could be very helpfull. I sadly found your channel after I already got my stuff together. It started because I was doing research and a project on personality, that helped me become more open minded and started analyzing my behavior- I found out that my over eating stemmed from the fact that I was just sad, bored and playing video games all day. Luckily this “enlightening “ happened just before summer break so I could put my full effort into loosing weight. I first started with getting myself busy and being productive ( I personally feel a lot happier and emotionally “satiated” when I’ve had a productive day and can go exhausted to bed) so I was helping my dad construct our house all the time except when I had to eat (switched my old stuff for low calorie high volume food ) and also I started playing tennis every other day so I had 700-900 active calories daily. When school started it first didn’t really impact me, just switched out construction work to studying more (sadly my active calories dropped😢) but I’ve recently had a little bump in the road- I got sick, so no tennis but this was still ok cause I was putting all my energy this week into a biology seminar, next week I went to school but still no tennis but still working on seminar but I started eating really poorly for like 3 weeks and gained 2 kg, but I got it under control and already lost those 2kg back. Also I started going to the gym with my friend half a week ago ( i think it’s gonna substitute tennis because it’s getting cold and tennis is really expensive tbh and I don’t think I can suport tennis, gym and getting good grades and placing in competitions )

OK a Brit here. You need to put in context that when this was made shows line Jeremy Kyle were on daytime TV (Think Springer Lite). There were a lot of shows where hard honesty was the mode de jour. These programmes no longer exist following suicides. Buffet restaurants popped up everywhere from 2001 onwards, what is better than 10000kcal for £10? I can tell by the way their street looks it is council / social housing - A trip to the buffet is the norm and shopping at Farmfoods buying UPF... I cannot walk into a Farmfoods, but you can buy two 15" pizza for the price of a bag of salad, they sell 24 packs of soda on a 2-4-1, and the shelves above the freezers are cram packed with unhealthy snack options. But, I recognise it makes food affordable. Also, for those that don't know the weird English body weight measurement of stone (we don't use it anywhere else) is 14 pounds.

I lost 93 lbs since 2019. My biggest wake up call was my husband and I went on a vacation in CA. We did a lot of walking and it was so hard for me. The second was we wanted to go snorkeling and needed a wet suit. None of them fit and I looked at myself in mirror and didn't like what saw. The 3rd was getting my blood results and everything was high. So I took a honest look at my lifestyle and started working on some of my bad habits. Than those got better and looked at other bad habits I needed to break. I learned as I went. If my weight loss slowed or stopped I adjusted my diet. It's been slow but effective. One thing that a lot of people do and I did as well in the past was give up if I fell off my diet or hit a bump in the road. Don't do that push through.

I enjoy cheese, fatty natural yoghurt, whole milk and snack on nuts, which keeps my fat intake at a good level. Kimchi, sauerkraut and yoghurt help my microbiome. I have also done a morning workout (exercise bike and weights) 4-5 times a week and have taken 500mg of Metformin twice a day. I am a brit and I miss this kind of TV, British people do this to one another, in England best friends always have the most insulitng nicknames for each other, its how we used to be. It might seem cruel but it's part of what helped me me lose weight, I was Big T for quite a while in my youth, I hated the name and now it's a funny joke as I'm skinny.

Trundling Trio is an alliteration and people as big as those are rare in the UK (but are getting more common, thanks America).

@@Xoulrath_ that’s why I never go, but Brits had fast food for years and it never got them fat. Until McDonalds came and got children hooked on crap food.

    • @Xoulrath_
      @Xoulrath_ 7 месяцев назад +2

@@marcdraco2189 it has nothing to do with "fast" food. I can make a sandwich that is healthy "fast," so it could be considered "fast" food. It's the ultra-processed offerings with all of the chemicals added, and nutrients stripped, that create the problem. There are plenty of fast food establishments that can be eaten at regularly and not cause any measurable difference to one's health or weight. Hence me mentioning self-control.
Additionally, blaming Americans for the UK's obesity is absurd seeing as how the American companies are only there because of your government. Now that isn't your fault, as you've got no more control over what your government does than I do. But maybe let's stop automatically pointing blame at "Americans" when what you really mean is the U.S. government and the oligarchy controlled by the money.

    • @marcdraco2189

@@Xoulrath_ I literally wrote a book on this stuff (even though people thought I was American and I downplayed my work on it). Have you SEEN the average American vs. the average Brit. Or we can look back to the 1970s and possibly a little later and see how many fat people there weren't.
It has everything to do with "fast" food, even your example included bread which is a foam stripped of almost everything but carbs and salt.
Sure the US government had a hand in this but so has American "freedom" and light touch regulation - the sort of regulation that's fucking with the whole planet, including undermining people's faith in science.
It it were down to me, I'd boot every last one of your shitty companies back where they came from: including Google, Facebook, Twitter etc.
I'm sick of kissing your arses because you're bigger than us.

the stuff about unconscious eating is so true.
i didn't believe how painfully easy it was for me to stop overeating/binging, once i started to really be present while i was eating - no distractions at all (no phone, computer or even distracting thoughts/feelings - just fully concentrating on the food).
and don't get me wrong, when i've finished my food i often felt REALLY uncomfortable. the hard thing to do is to keep being present with all your meals, because it actually takes away some of the pleasure of eating it (even if it's sweets and stuff) and losing this "pleasure" (of overeating/binging) is obviously very difficult to accept.
but once you are in the habit of staying mindful, it gets easier and you won't regret it at all. literally everything in your life gets easier.
it's kind of a meditation you're doing so it's helping with your concentration and emotional regulation too!

    1) Judge it by the time it came out! (Things have changed a lot in the last 10 years) 2) British humour is very different American style humour. So you have to take into consideration what American audiences might take offence something to a British person would find funny.
    3) these families got loads of help and support and free stuff to help them live healthier
I remember watching the show when it came out and I never found it was offensive. He was honest and was trying to shock people into looking at the reality of the situation and to make real changes and I remember there be a lot of scuess stories from this show

When I was anorexic I loved Fat Families. But you bring up good criticisms. Like the sort of stuff he says to fat people might not be as palatable if directed at another group, because we are used to fat people being treated poorly.
