  • This is a brief video of Marie and I dancing on the Cunard Queen Elizabeth cruise ship on our Greek Islands cruise in November 2012. Thank you to Matsuo Kouichi of Japan for providing us with this video footage.

I was a dance host on the QE2, a much smaller ship, in 2002. The floor was much smaller. The cruise host, subordinate to the cruise director, was an absolute terror and drove me crazy. It was my first dance host cruise. This floor is virtually empty in the video compared to the traffic jam I had to maneuver. I had to pass a test to get into the program followed by a personal interview. I also hosted on Norwegian Dream and the Amsterdam.
5% of the women know they know how to dance, 15% know they don't know how to dance, and 80% are clueless they don't know how to dance. They think they can dance foxtrot after one lesson. The hosts aren't trying to teach but get through the dance. Hosts take a lot of abuse. I've been blamed for being a poor leader even though I had 5 years of PRIVATE lessons before I sailed on the QE2. I learned Quickstep which isn't a required dance.
Most cruise lines have thrown ballroom dancing overboard.

Very nice cha-cha and waltz with elegant movements. I enjoyed watching the movie and assume you won the contest.

My sister and her husband are spending a week on the Queen Elizabeth Greek cruise next month. It would be nice if there was a dance competition on board as I'm sure theyd like to help out, they are both professionals and invented the Mardi Gra Cha Cha. It would be an honour for them to judge it I'm sure. thnx for posting !

Is that a starch shirt and collar I notice?
11/10 on the details, amazingly selected evening clothes! There was even a guy in White Tie and Tails in the background!

Those were the days on Cunard when you had room to dance and amongst dancers, unfortunately these days Cunard have given far too much allowance to their (so called) dance hosts who take over the floor, they dearly lack any idea of dance etiquette or floor craft, they think they own the floor and the seating area, they bring poor (mostly) ladies on the floor and try to teach them to dance whilst those who are capable dancers have to keep making allowances for them, yes we all started to dance at some point but not on busy floors full of competent people, there are lots of places where new dancers can learn and then get on to the floor, that's the way we did it, but hey are Cunard going to listen.

I find it utterly odd and wrong-looking when men dance without jackets. You are clearly good dancers, but I much prefer the rumba clip to the Viennese waltz and foxtrot.

That's as maybe Kate, but I get so hot when I am dancing, even in a strappy dress, I cannot object if my poor husband takes off his jacket!

Hello Kate, rumba in 3/4 Viennese waltz. Interesting. I gotta try that one. Maybe milonga so my partner can follow me. Foxtrot timing is similar to a rumba but the flavors are different.
