Hideous costumes and a weird setting: I can't tell if it's supposed to be indoors or outdoors. It looks like a mishmash of La Sylphide sets: James' house meets the natural world. If someone didn't KNOW the story, they'd be confused by all of this (and never assume that "everyone knows Giselle" because there are dozens of newbies at every performance). Personally, I'm tired of all this modernization with classic operas and ballets these days. Just read a review where Samson And Delilah took place in a giant casino with a huge clown head gazing on the action. Now we have Giselle wearing 1950's Barbie clothes and dancing in what looks like the patio of a Turkish harem. Will sanity ever prevail???

The design of this production is STUNNING. Lighting is the dead last thing I ever understand or notice, and it immediately caught my eye. It's also the first time I've seen Kaas and I am fascinated with his sort of..."untraditional grace" for male ballet dancers which shatters the stereotype that the men parade the women around until they do the "jumpy parts," and that men's roles are more stoic. I watched him dance just as much as Giselle, a first for me in this ballet, and maybe...any?
Agreed! A nuanced performance of Albrecht is absolutely the key. Even the most incredible Giselles are limited by their partner. The first act is grounded in a familiar earthly setting whereas act II takes place on an ethereal, almost spiritual plane, where Albrecht is the only living force amongst ghosts (not counting Hilarion’s brief appearance as he dies soon after!) so the production relies on him to tie the two acts together and bring out that humanity in Giselle that we saw in the first half. Otherwise how can we be expected to care and root for Giselle to save him from the Wilis? So much of the magic of this ballet is lost when you don’t see the characterisation imo! Edit to add: I think Andreas Kaas was only around 23 when this was performed? Incredible stage presence, particularly for one so young. Also enjoyed Kizzy Matiakis’ acting for Myrtha, sad to hear she has recently retired but wish her well :)

Ida Praetorius is amazing! I really like this version of Giselle, it’s seems really fresh to me and the characters exude youthful impetuosity in Act I. Everything movement and expression feels “natural”, it’s the only word I can think to use, like they really are the characters doing this for the first time and not professional dancers who’ve been rehearsing this for months and months. I also love Ida’s facial expressions, they are spot on with her dancing, you can see what her character is thinking.
I have no idea why everyone is calling the costumes "modern", they're still very evocative of medieval peasants, but with simpler colors and less froofy details. I really like the simplified look, it highlights the dancers nicely.
Every single thing that can be said about this production has already been said, so I have a vain question: Why are almost all of them stunningly beautiful? 😅
1.42.57 is awesome!! There are so many small details in this production that add to the drama! (Usually Albrecht follows Giselle when she leaps off the stage. Here one of the willis girls steps in his way, which makes a lot of sense) I also love the staging, especially the light, and the orchestra is also doing a wonderful job. I cannot understand why people don’t like this production. Tastes are different, but what do they expect? 19th Century costumes over and over again, and Bolshoi- like huge stage and corps? Leonid Sarafanov, presently one of the best male dancers in the world, left the Marinskij theatre some years ago. This theatre is relying on traditional costumes (copies of the original ones) and museum- like performances from 150 years ago. Sarafanov said in an interview : „They are mistaking cliches for tradition.“ And he is so right! Opera composer Richard Wagner, one of the most innovative composers of the 19th century, also said the famous quote: „Kids, create something new !“ Don‘t get me wrong. I love Mariinski theatre, and I‘m most grateful to them for conserving these precious old Tchaikovsky-time ballets. But it’s good that there are so many other companies that try out new things!!
I just came upon this and am blown away. Especially then end, when the curtain rises and the two of them just stand there and look at one another. Simply stunning.
Oh my gosh, amazing. Normally with Giselle I just tolerate the first act until we can get to the ghost story, but this was absolutely riveting. The mad scene was so tortured! Amazeballs sets, too. A++, my friends, just A++ work!
The acting was simply wonderful and the chemistry between the leads was captivating and natural. My favorite acting moment was when Giselle leaves the stage toward the end of the night as Albrecht’s strength wanes and instead of following her into the wings, he is blocked by a willis. The look of despair on his face is heart-wrenching as he watches Giselle disappear, turning away only to meet Myrtha’s gaze as she once again avows that he is to dance until he dies. And the best moment is at 1:43:05 as he watches what Myrtha is, in effect, saying and nods his head in resignation at Myrtha’s edict. It’s superb acting, some of the best I’ve ever seen and utterly believable. Also, the lighting and set design was fantastic and despite a consensus on the costumes, I absolutely loved them. I thought Giselle’s Act I dress was beautiful and it made her look both youthful (in it’s fresh interpretation) and delicate. I don’t believe that being a peasant, the point of which is to highlight the the fact that these two individuals are clearly not supposed to or meant to be together, needs to permeate everything down to the costumes. Being a peasant as opposed to just a commoner does not, imho, change the story and therefore the costumes should be able to have some flexibility in their design. I also particular liked Albrecht’s costume and thought the black/gunmetal colors with the gold embroidery or accents was very regal. The Willis also looked elegant and the unconventional design of their costumes gave them a edginess which I think reflects the harsh reality of their role (the whole ‘dance to your death angle? 😉). But, really I think all the costumes breathed a sense of freshness into this wonderful classic. I'd love to see this production some day! Bravo!

This is very interesting production of Giselle. I liked very much the acting in the first act: Giselle is so natural, young, soft and the mad scene is so heartbreaking! Amazing jump gives a special sad feeling. At the end, her death is a big tragedy for her mom - they only remain on the scene. This was very heartfelt. He is also very good - the young talented dancer with a great future. I liked also the peasant pas de deux especially the first male variation which is virtuously done. A few words about the production. For me, this is fine even though I disagree that all colors are used pink, green, blue, yellow for a corp and the main characters are in dark colors. He is in the black costume in the second act which is not good as the scene is dark as well. Honestly, I enjoyed very much and thank you very much for showing this beatiful piece of art!
I did not expect to be so moved by this performance, but here I am with tears on my cheeks. The dancing by all is lovely. While Giselle is ultimately a tale of love, forgiveness and redemption, the dancing -- and the acting -- of Ms. Praetorius and Mr. Kaas bring alive not only the uplift of Act II but the depth of Act I's inexorable tragedy. And incidentally, though I know the story of Giselle perfectly well, the performance of Ms. Matiakis as Myrtha drew me brilliantly into a cloud of uncertainty: might it be that just this one time Albrecht really was going to be doomed? To create such an implacable spirit -- wonderful! Some commenters wish the stage were more commodious, but to me it seemed just right. The management of the artistic forces is so deft that in these hands and this place Giselle becomes almost a chamber work, with that form's directness, intimacy, immediacy. and absence of ostentation. But never hushed. Just think of it: no-one taking giant steps to travel over the vast acreage of a "grand" stage. Yet it never felt to me that anyone -- including the lovely corps de ballet -- was pinched. The orchestra is fine, meshing with and inspiring the dancing and the story. They carried me along with them. Many thanks to Mr. Bond and the musicians. If you're thinking of watching this production, do! You've nothing to lose, and -- just perhaps -- a good, soul-cleansing cry to gain.
Bighin Giulio Renzo. 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
I love traditional versions as well as this new and refreshing interpretation by and young and very talented troupe of dancers. It’s lifted my spirit, tugged at my heartstrings and brought joy. It moved me to tears by the ballet’s end.
Some costumes aside, I did enjoy this version. Danish ballet sets also I find are usually very simple and not over extravagant. As a dancer I really like the Bournoville style, it’s seems simple, and natural while still highlighting the athleticism’s, elegance, grace and musicality of the dancer. The acting was also great.
A lovely Giselle as a full company! The dancers are an exact technique beautifully trained and rehearsed with a fine orchestra to match. Now, if the sets and lighting with a larger stage of a generous expense that this this great company deserves,, what a more stunning effect of the ethereal 2nd act. Those costumes of the soft toile is very very nice of the other side of Wili world, too. 💝🌹
If Alphonse Adam etc used authenticbmedieval Germann music and dance, we would have historical accuracy, but since he composed 19th c Romantic style, he has given the world a masterpiece.
Благодарю за высокое наслаждение. not Adam, but ADAN.
Very interesting viewpoints on this, especially the meaning of what the color blue represented. Personally, I enjoy seeing the variety different companies being to its production, but I also understand this may not be everyone’s cup of tea.
I watched this because I so enjoyed the Romeo & Juliet that you posted that this wonderful company did. I would love to see this lead couple in Coppelia, Cinderella or A Folk Tale. I very much enjoyed this production: beautiful acting, sets, dancing, .. especially good costumes. This didn't have quite the Romantic Ballet gravitas I'm used to, but this more youthful approach made the dance to the death finale more dramatic. I liked the changed choreography bits. The chorus did a nice job. Liked the Myrthe.
Thanks for uploading the full ballet! I love Kizzy Matiakis as Myrtha in this production, she's amazing, a very different interpretation from others I've seen (I loved Amy Watson's take on the role, too). Also, Eleonora Morris and Astrid Elbo as Willies...
The Willies are beautiful, only it offends my feeling of fair play that Hilarion is killed, as far as I know he did not cheat anybody. He's dead only because he is male,
@@ozsfi -- Yes, it is unfair. But it advances the drama by making us realize that the Wilis are dead serious, and that Albrecht is going to be in deadly peril.
@@ozsfi He's an unfortunate soul, yeah, poor Hilarion. But he gets one of the best parts of the musical score imo, for his death. At least that's something. :)
Lovely production. Yes it is not a patch on Russian ones - nothing ever is. But it keeps the flame alive for those who cannot reach this pinnacle as dancers, or attend a top-notch performance as spectators. The English Youth Ballet has been recruiting dancers aged 8 to 18 for a production of Giselle. They have an interesting system where there is a core of professional dancers and then they put out a call in selected cities all over the country for young dancers to join the corps de ballet for a short season performing a classic work, maybe only two or three performances but it is wonderful training for the children. I am going to the Nottingham one soon - I am not expecting miracles, but it is great to know that the classics are being done by others besides the "creme de la creme". I am not a huge fan of ballet, but Giselle is a very moving story and it was created FOR ballet in a most interesting way.
I was just contemplating whether this was an artistic choice, or a practical circumstance of the theater. Also the buildings at the wings…when the scene is in a forest.
Astrid, ballet fans - and music fans also - are much obliged by your posting of "Giselle" by the Royal Danish Ballet. I have in vain tried to spot that performance on blu-ray or DVD. I wonder if there are plans for having it available on 1080 media. This is a performance that surely desereves to be world-wide divulged. Thanks for you attention to my inquiry. Best regards from Rio de Janeiro.

If you're thinking of watching this production, do! You've nothing to lose, and -- just perhaps -- a good, soul-cleansing cry to gain.
Very thoughtful comment, and totally right about each aspect. Thank you.
Very different Giselle but maintaining the story refreshing attractive performers artistic and technically proficient
Bighin Giulio Renzo. 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Lyrical, ethereal, captures spirit of this ballet perfectly, young ,love, no over enthusiastic grandeur.
i'm surprised by how much i actually like this. it's charming and well done. thank you.
Beautiful production, excellent dancers... and the costumes...
I watched The Lady with the Camellias at the Royal Danish Theater with Ida. She is a wonderful ballerina. The production is beautiful, thanks
A young beautiful Giselle this preformer is excellent for the part
I love Giselle. My favorite Ballet. The costumes are so unique.
Thank you for uploading.
I love traditional versions as well as this new and refreshing interpretation by and young and very talented troupe of dancers. It’s lifted my spirit, tugged at my heartstrings and brought joy. It moved me to tears by the ballet’s end.
It lifted many.....spirits....,........
I loved it! Beautiful very talented young dancers!!!
Andreas is so gorgeous
43:05 - 43:08....her turning got a little bit of mistakes... failed to finish the turn..but she saved it immediately. Well done.
i cried when giselle died, absolutely incredible. So beautiful
And I cried when Albrecht lived!
The costumes are gorgeous 🌷🌺🌸🌹
beautiful - they´re so young and credible
A lovely Giselle as a full company! The dancers are an exact technique beautifully trained and rehearsed with a fine orchestra to match. Now, if the sets and lighting with a larger stage of a generous expense that this this great company deserves,, what a more stunning effect of the ethereal 2nd act. Those costumes of the soft toile is very very nice of the other side of Wili world, too. 💝🌹
I love the costumes and stage art, so original and sylish!
Thank you so much. This "Giselle" is a beautiful piece of art.
If Alphonse Adam etc used authenticbmedieval Germann music and dance, we would have historical accuracy, but since he composed 19th c Romantic style,
he has given the world a masterpiece.
Superb dancing, flawless in fact and a wonderful production.
Beauty! Beauty! Beauty! Beautiful interpretation! The dancing was impressive! Please come to USA and dazzle us with your ballet!
They are trained also in the Bournville style which makes then expert jumpers and quick with footwork

*ANGEL'S LAST MISSION: LOVE*
Angel : Oh, yeah, yeah. I saw their production of Giselle in 1890. I cried like a baby. And I was evil!
(Waiting in the Wings season 3 episode 13)
Me too! I already saw the drama once, was gonna watch it again, but I’m watching this first, so i can understand their ballet better in the show.
An extraordinary ballet with excellent dancers and fantastic choreography. 💖❤️❤️🌟
BEAUTIFUL! I'm bawling. Thank you for this gorgeous production!!
not Adam, but ADAN.
Beautiful music, beautiful very talented young dancers!!! Great!!
Very interesting viewpoints on this, especially the meaning of what the color blue represented. Personally, I enjoy seeing the variety different companies being to its production, but I also understand this may not be everyone’s cup of tea.
Beautiful!!! Majestic!!! World-class!!!👏👏👏♥️♥️♥️
Vraiment magnifique!!! Je vous remercier pour parteger.
This is so beautiful! 😢
what's weird is that my name is Giselle , also amazing dancing
Magnificient! I love this so very much!
Definitely one of my favorites
Simplement parfait, magnifique et très émouvant.
Thank you so much for uploading the whole ballet!
Everything is beautiful!!!!!
Very special treat to see the Danes with their light high jump performing this!
1:09:21 amazing visuals :o
Thank you so much, my 💃 dance so proud of her 🥰!!!!!
Thanks for uploading the full ballet! I love Kizzy Matiakis as Myrtha in this production, she's amazing, a very different interpretation from others I've seen (I loved Amy Watson's take on the role, too). Also, Eleonora Morris and Astrid Elbo as Willies...
The Willies are beautiful, only it offends my feeling of fair play that Hilarion is killed, as far as I know he did not
cheat anybody.
I am not a huge fan of ballet, but Giselle is a very moving story and it was created FOR ballet in a most interesting way.
the ballet dancers make it look so effortless but it is pure art .
43:26 is and will always be my fav part
You saved me 30 minutes, because I couldn't find the variation and was about watch the whole ballet. By the way, the hops are my favorite part too!
Wow what a wonderful ballet! Thank you for posted this streaming! I adore Royal Danish but l’m in love to Ida Praetorius. She is goregous!❤️
Sooo beautiful. I wish there were captions to understand what they are saying.
Love the costumes
Amazing guys! After so many Gizelle’s you captured the spirit of it once more! (Would have done without the doors on the graveyard but ok :) )
I was just contemplating whether this was an artistic choice, or a practical circumstance of the theater. Also the buildings at the wings…when the scene is in a forest.
Very nice wilis in the romantic style by Coralli/Perrot. What a redicilous set-design. gosh!!
I just love this
Amo el ballet esta obra impresionantemente bella. Saludos desde Colombia
L,,he vist dues vegades al Mariinsky Theatre .......una meravella ❤
Astrid, ballet fans - and music fans also - are much obliged by your posting of "Giselle" by the Royal Danish Ballet.
I have in vain tried to spot that performance on blu-ray or DVD. I wonder if there are plans for having it available on 1080 media. This is a performance that surely desereves to be world-wide divulged. Thanks for you attention to my inquiry. Best regards from Rio de Janeiro.
i want to see this live in berlin asap. its incredible beautiful.
Great luck I've found this; just missed the theatre's streaming by a couple of days!
I love it! Thanks so much!
Magical pair🤩🌹💯
Beautiful!
Much more human and down to earth interpretations coming from the North.
