WALKS IN HAMPSHIRE at STEVENTON (JANE AUSTEN'S BIRTHPLACE) & THE SOURCE OF THE RIVER TEST.

  • This is another video in my series “ Walks in Hampshire” accompanied by my Whippet (Logan). In this episode, I take a walk around the villages of Steventon, Ashe & Deane in North Hampshire (about 6 miles South West of Basingstoke). Steventon is probably best known for being the birthplace of Jane Austen.
I start my 5.5 mile circular walk at Steventon church (where Jane Austin's Father, George, was once Rector)and after passing by Steventon Manor I head through Steventon Park, under the railway and on to Ashe Park via Kimbers Copse.
Although the official source of the River Test sits in a private field opposite Ashe House, Logan & I check out a pond / spring to the North of the site that could well feed into it. (We do get to view the official source from a distance).
After exploring the church at Ashe (which has a delightful “surprise” inside), I head East to Deane for my third church of the walk and the magnificent Deane House.
I then head South along part of the Wayfarers Walk, back underneath the railway, towards Steventon. This gives me the opportunity of checking out the field in which there was once Steventon Rectory - where Jane Austen was born & spent the first 25 ears or so of her life.
The weather was perfect for my walk - a sunny, Spring day with hardly a cloud in the sky. Daffodils and snowdrops were out in all their glory.
PS: The sound in the final "end scene" clip might seem a bit odd. I had not pushed my microphone in hard enough into the camera..... so it only is working on one speaker (ie not stereo).
Music by Original Spruce (Copyright owner). Permission for me to use this track has been given to me by the copyright owner. 2022. Thanks for another super video packed full of interest and history! I think you and Logan definitely passed the 'Test' test! Loved the little robin in the church. Must be getting warmer as neither of you needed a coat. Really enjoyable and seems you wore Logan right out. Well done on the Crufts exploits as well.

Thanks for yet another brilliant video Dave. This is definitely another one we'll do with our two Dachshunds in the future. But I do have one question... It appears you haven't explored Wiltshire yet in your videos to date. I really hope you could consider some of the beautiful walks around our way such as the Chalke Valley and Old Sarum areas. I note from a previous video you used to work in Salisbury so I guess you have some local knowledge too. Keep up the good work, and very much looking forward to your next episode! Best wishes, Henry & Beth

Thank you both. I certainly hope to do some walks in Wiltshire at some stage. I have got a fairly full schedule of walks planned in Hampshire, Dorset & West Sussex over the Summer so it may well be in the Autumn that I start venturing "North". Thanks for watching.

Very interesting observation on the source of the Test Dave. I guess it would be worth visiting in the summer to see whether it had dried up or not. John

Good idea John. I have just done a walk in the New Forest, following the Highland Water from it's source to Bolderford Bridge (where it becomes the Lymington River). The length is about 6 miles ...... but virtually all of it was bone dry! It really has been a hot & dry Summer for sure.

This is really great. And so are the others you make Dave.
I like the story of Jane Austen and fondly remember her house in Winchester when I used to visit the town with my Mum... I think Jane spent her last days there.
I do like the new music at 19:30 Not sure what it's called but it's a great addition in this one..
Congrats on producing so many good videos Dave. Well done. I've created a playlist for my favourites.

Thanks David. Glad you like the new music. Mark Spruce (the composer) has kindly allowed me to use a few tracks of his for free & without copyright which is great. I plan to mix the music between the content from Mark & the previous music that I have used from the RUclips Audio Library (trying to add the appropriate music to the appropriate walk). The tracks can be found at spruce1.bandcamp.com/album/fingers-and-strings

Well done Dave. A very informative walk in an area I’m not too familiar with. I thought the source of the river Test was on southern water property. My only recollection of Steventon was playing cricket there and I remember that due to a public road which ran through the outfield. Play had to be halted when a vehicle wanted to pass through.

My Mum worked at Steventon Manor when she was 14 as a servant, she was paid £18 a year, half of that was sent home to her mum who lived in South Shields in Northumberland. She told me she had to be up at 6am to set and light fires. On Sundays all the staff were expected to go to St Nicholas Church. I believe Sir Onslow Fane owned it. He had hunting horses , which he shot when he discovered they were to be requisitioned for WWII. A sad day. Mum went from here to Astwood Farm near Birmingham to join the Land Army
