  • In today's video, we learn all about switch heaters and how they work. There's a few different types of switch heaters. All of them work differently, but do the same job.

I remember leaving Union station in Chicago when I was a kid on the old Burlington Northern passenger trains. (Pre-Metra) and seeing the gas heaters in operation. I remember wondering if the railroad knew their tracks were on fire...

Great Explanation on a Topic I have never seen Discussed before. I have seen the Natural Gas Heaters in the STL Area of the Midwest. Thanks! 👍

You have a happy knack of answering questions I have often asked myself but felt left to my own resources to answer OR you have added extra information to a topic I thought I had sussed, all done without long words or patronising short words! 🙂

The gas heaters by the A2 tower always get people calling 911 saying the rails are on fire

Nice video and you brought me back to my railroading career in the track department with Canadian Pacific. We used to have to light the power switch heaters up when they were propane when I first started along our territory then they converted most to natural gas which then the dispatcher now controls the heaters. We also used what's called fire snake which is used in pull aparts or rail separation during the cold weather months. We would lay the fire snake along the base of the rail then light it on fire to expand the rail back so we could get bolts back in the rail joint. I will be doing a video on this with photos of us actually doing this process on the CP later this winter due to us having a ton of projects on the table already. Enjoyed watching and have a nice upcoming weekend.(Steve)

Wow, thats super cool that you used to work for CP! I wish I would've known about fire snakes prior to making this video... oh well. Also, I never knew the rails could get so cold that they snap, that must be some intense cold! Good luck on your upcoming video, and have a good weekend as well.

Yes 25 years with them cut short due to medical retirement but still got the pension. Now I am back into the hobby part of it once again. You may be interested on a premier we did a few Saturdays ago with the MoW equipment its part one of a few part series that's is an ongoing project also. I will provide you with the playlist link that this video is on which is called MoW madness part 1. In this video I have worked with or around throughout my RR career. Thanks and the upcoming weekend looks very cold and windy here in SE Wisconsin so we will be inside working on projects.(Steve) ruclips.net/p/PLJIYrjdcZwVgCera8mbYsi_4LVuspI_Gh

in Downtown Chicago near the Terminal stations you will see flame heaters but out in the field most switches are air blown heaters. Very cool to see the rails BURN HA HA HA in the Storage yards most tracks are just blowing hot air the sound is very noticeable!!!

While that’s very true, I wouldn’t go around making that information public. This video is a cover up, you know.

Seeing that Metra clip reminded me of when i saw rails on fire and switch heaters on different sections of the IC (now CN) tracks when i was young. I didn't know they were called switch heaters back then
