Forging 18th Century Hardware, Horseshoe Hinges

- In this video I show you how I forge a hinge out of two horseshoes. I got this idea several years agao while visiting the the Smokey Mountains in North Carolina and touring some old historic Log Cabins. These cabins were from the late 18th and early 19th century. The pioneers had used their old worn horseshoes and repurposed them to make hinges for their doors to their cabins and barns.

Great old school look! Well done!
Very nice project indeed
Thank you sir. I've made a good many of these.
Nice work neighbor!
Thank you friend!
Great idea. I have to put up a couple of doors on my shed and couldn't decide on what type of hinges to make but now I know. Thank you sir.
Subscribed also.
Fantastic! Glad I could offer some inspiration 😁. Thank you for the sub!

Glad I could be of help! Thanks for watching and commenting.
Really nice !!! I found that slot jaw tongs help in the struggle with horseshoes
Good tip on the slot jaw tongs. Need to make me some! Thank you for watching and commenting!
Refiner's Forge Ken’s Custom Iron sella blanks , rapid tongs
@@johnblanton9845 What? Real blacksmiths don't buy tongs 😆😆. Totally joking. Yeah I've seen the rapid tongs. Never purchased them. I do buy tools that it doesn't make since for me to make because of time. It would probably be good practice for me to forge some though.
Pretty cool hinge. They'd go nice on a horse stall door.
Thank you. Yeah I had a customer one time order a bunch of these for custom tack lockers she was having built for her horse barn.
Howdy Jared 👋.
This is a pretty kuul video, to go w all the rest, on an interesting subject. So many possibilities for used pony footware. Im glad you showed tis one. Fine job sirSir !
🙏 God bless and well wishes
Crawford out 🔥⚒️🧙🏼♂️
Great job, such a cool hinge. Draw knife video next?
Thank you! I do have an order for a draw knife. So maybe we can make a video of it. Thank you so much for watching and commenting!
Nice, I'll have to try a pair of those. No horses now, still lots of leftover shoes.
Definitely a good use of old horseshoes. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Howdy Brother- that hinge is amazing! It is very enjoyable watching you make things in your shop. Everything you do is definitely handcrafted with much skill. Hope y’all are doing well. God bless and keep ya’ll safe
Thank you sir! I don't know about amazing, just copying the pioneer, but I'll take the compliment 😁. I'm blessed by God to do what I'm able to do. Thanks as always for watching and commenting!
That is excellent hinge work! How long are the barrels?
Hey brother awesome idea and video. So after attempting this for the first time my issue I run into is that I smash the walls, where the nails go, together. It looks terrible. Any tips or tricks to keep that groove as straight as possible. Thanks again. Just subbed
Thank you for watching and commenting! So I think the key is that when you are straightening and re bending you have to be light with your hammer blows just enough to bend the steel not actual forge the steel. Not sure what your experience level is at smithing, but this is a common error to over forge an item or use too much force when not necessary. I still do it myself sometimes.
@@refinersforge1781 thank you for the quick reply. I have about a year of Smith experience but I'm also self taught so I'm probably behind the ball. After thinking about it and watching this video, like you said, I'm over forging and my steel is way too hot. I'm about to put a shoe in the forge now and see what happens at a lesser heat and softer hammer blows. Appreciate you again for everything
And BTW what are you carrying?
@@hoghearse6316 had to go back and watch a clip of the video to make sure, it changes every once in a while, I like variety in my life 😆. That is the one I carry most, it is a 2nd gen Glock 27, which is the sub compact .40.
Happy to help, hope my suggestions are helping.
@@refinersforge1781 so it worked! Man thank you for your suggestions. That's a nice piece. I alter between a Walter pps 40 and a Springfield 1911 45. Like you, love having variety
Is your shop connected to your house ? Only reason I ask Is because mine is . Thought I was the only one crazy enough! Lol
No it is a detached garage. But honestly I think the forge is the least fire dager in the shop.
Lol i agree. My shop attached to the house dont bother me a bit . But the insurance company dont like it . Lol. I like your channel! Keep up the good work .
