I know this song made you both feel awkward, but it has a personal meaning for me. My husband passed just over a year ago. But back in the early part of our relationship(dating), 15 years ago, we had temporarily split up because we were doing the long distanced relationship & it was extremely difficult. He had started dating someone that was not at all right for him. Anyways, this song makes me think of a relationship that ended, that maybe shouldnt have : ) Kinda like what happened with us, we got back together & it was the best years of our lives. This song reminds me of the time we were apart & knowing that we had made a mistake

That's how I see the song. There are many clues that point to that as well. I mean, he straight up says that they used to be in a relationship, and their current relationships aren't right for them. Neither of them moving on from the other.

This song has always hit home to me..I met my bf in 1997..we we're together for a year then the summer of 98 he stopped talking to me and ended up with another girl coincidentally with the same name as mine..he spent the summer with her but I never gave up..I was bffs with his sister so i think that helped to talk with him again..in the end..I got him back...been together for 26yrs now and married 17yrs and have 2 handsome young men...my husband always told me that he would hear this song and think of me while he was with that chick..so I can relate to this song on a personal level ☺️

I can relate to this song i got my man back we have been together for 46 plus years. We never got over each other together again forever until death and beyond Awesome reaction.
That song is 100% my ex and I. We have been in love since we were 14 yrs old. Broke up over something stupid. We both dated other people for a few months and realized what the hell are we doing. We were still in love with each other and couldn't imagine spending the rest of our lives apart. We both broke up with who we were with and got back together. We got engaged and started planning our wedding. Till one day the other woman called and said she was pregnant. I made him go back and do the stand up thing. Which he did. We still absolutely love each other and can never ever ever be near each other alone. He's still with her but not happy. I've been married and divorced. Wish I knew then what I know now. Things would have gone very differently. But gotta live with the decisions we/I made. He will forever be my true love. Hopefully some day I will find someone else to love and love me back.

Good example of why I love "heavy music", we don't shy away from the "uncomfortable" questions/concepts/reality.
People tend to get lost in the chorus and not the story. It's his lost, or first, love. "I guess we never really ever moved on." And in the chorus he says "girl you make it hard to be faithful." That tells me he hasn't done anything out of line yet, but she's making it hard to remain faithful.
That said, needs to man up and and either break up with his girl and go to the other one, or tell the chick on the phone to kick rocks.
Well, he says "You make it hard to be faithful.. with the lips of an angel".. which can kinda imply many things, like her telling him how much she wants him back, or just him remembering all the good moments, the kisses, the depth of what they had, and it being hard to get pass. It's clear he's having an emotional affair by still talking to her the way he does and not just remaining friends. A choice should be made, either way, it's a great song that I still jam out to!!
The ex is dead..... last part after solo instead of singing " and I" never wanna say goodbye. He instead sings "let her die" implying he can't move past it.
The last verse of the song says it all. “Honey, why are you calling me so late?“ That question becomes less literal and more figurative. Too late as in so late in life.

This song was one of those where you put yourself into all 3 situations. I hated it when I was younger but then life happened and after a while I really stopped and thought about it. I have literally been in every position. The girl in the next room, the person on the phone and the one tormented between the two. Its just human nature, I guess. Cool yall took the time. I will now subscribe over a song I wasn't originally fond of.
I saw them twice in concert when they first came out. They are amazing. His voice. “Better than me” is my favorite! The video. Phew you think this songs a doozie.

Oh, not sure if either of you are into country music or not, but a GREAT song by Faith Hill & her husband, Tim McGraw, has a similar theme. It's a wonderful song. If you get a chance to check it out, I think you'd enjoy it...its called "Like We Never Loved at All"
What so many don't understand is that we only live once so do anything that gets your to that. If it's a relationship that is keeping you from that happiness it's an injustice to all involved in that mess to continue it.
Anyone offended or anything like that from this song simply ain't never been in the situation... If you have it's good to know you weren't alone at that moment having that sentiment.

The first girl I fell in love with, we loved each other no doubt, but we were both just to young. I cheated on her she cheated on me, we would try to stay away from each other, it would last a month tops. There were plenty of times I had other girls in my bed but I loved her, and she would call and I wanted her there. So that's how I interpreted it.
