Prokofiev composed the Opera War and Peace during the most intense moments of WWII as a monument to Soviet Russian Patriotism. Nevertheless, it didn't save the composer of being attacked during the Zhdanov trials in 1948.

Sergei Prokofiev the greatest, most imaginative, and compassionate composer of the twentieth century. Even in suffering his music sings. Always positive but never -- superficial.
Yes his music is not always readily understood but once you become familiar with his writing you understand his importance as unquestionably one of the greatest composers of the 20th c.

Yep. Boy dun gud. After reading War and Peace about 10 times over my life, in the process first time buggering up my A levels by reading it instead of revising, this music is a great complement. Just love all of Prokofiev's works. A major experience of my life was listening to his music in the Mariinsky in St. Peters.

Beginning of Battle hints of Respighi (fountains of Rome)I fancy though I’m not a musician if wrong I stand corrected . Basing my guess on fact that Respighi studied under Rimsky Korsakov as did Prokofiev.

Yes, Prokofiev took what was a gentle theme from his score to Ivan The Terrible and built it up to become the Victory Finale for War And Peace. It's undoubtably one of his greatest melodies.
