- In my race to get to ATP minimums, I am making some MASSIVELY Impractical flights. Follow me today as I fly from Texas to Kentucky and back to visit some pilots. This is my first flight in sustained hard IMC
In this second installment of the Impractical Flights series, join me as I embark on a 1700-mile journey to meet Ryan to get some legendary cheese! Unfortunately, the weather had other plans, and we fell short by just 50 miles. I ended up savoring the cheese alone in a hotel before flying back home. Watch the adventure unfold, and see how the journey was just as exciting as the destination!

"I'm tough, I'm strong, I can fly in hard IM...SPIDER WEB! SPIDER WEB SPIDER WEB!"
it's bad when my favorite aviation youtuber accidentally shows competency.
I am trying to wrap my head around Bryan saying he is not our flight instructor ? What about all the log entries ???
There's plenty of people that walk around my neighborhood talking to themselves....you'd fit in just fine :)
I like the new walk and talk format. Let us know when you’re going to do it again, so that we can stalk you.
No comment on the jump cuts?? Missed opportunity!
"Let go of the yoke"...it's like using the force!😂
15:42 It looks like she was on a mission to overtake you, like a Mooney pilot.
HAHAH!!!!!
Loving the increased upload frequncy! You should lose your job more often! In all seriousness, best of luck to you with the airlines. I think it’s awesome and hope we’re able to see some of the process documented (in a non-distracting way for you) All the best.
What a cool video! You are so awkwardly awkward! I just realized that 420 puff needs a G1000... We should band together and pass the hat.
Y'all have something there that we don't in the TX Panhandle.
"There's a beautiful woman behind every tree".
HAHAHA!!!!!!
I did a hard IMC flight during my IR training. I was doing the same as you. I looked at the engine monitor, and my CFII said... "Where are you going?" I was diving and turning. It's amazing on how hard it actually is. The plane I trained in was good, but didn't have an AP. I'm now working on my commercial, and we just got a plane back with a new Garmin panel. The gamil 500 AP is great, and I've been brave enough to do IMC solo because of it's help. I will hand fly, but when I need to make the mental load less... I turn it on. I'm enjoying these slightly more serious vids. Good luck to ATP.
Alabama is currently hot and humid… except for Oshkosh, I’ll pretty much be inside until November 😅
The letting go of the yoke things is huge. True even in planes that creep into a left bank because they don’t have aileron trim. That left bank is way more predictable than whatever the yoke will do if you keep your hand on it.
I used to be so bad about looking back out the window and seeing the ground at a 30 degree angle. As soon as I got my hands off the yoke, that stopped.
Looks HOT in Dallas, I had to put the heat back on up here yesterday!
ITS HORRIBLE AND IT IS JUST GETTING STARTED!
Easiest way I found to avoid accidentally over controlling is to hold the yoke like this 🤌.
Great video. Very engaging.
Very very cool to see your journey to the Flight Levels! We are all behind you BT! 👊🫡
HEY!!! You are an inspiration for me my friend!
Fun journey to watch! No shortages of laughter watching this. The spider web incident particularly had my wife rolling!
I walk a lot this time of year and I would prefer to get up at like 5 Am and do my walks but it seems every other tree has a spider web attached across the sidewalk to a mailbox or other tree. I HATE spiders. The thought of accidentally picking up a hitchhiker terrifies me so I am doing my 5 mile walks in the heat of the day. I skipped yesterday so today I have to do 10. Its going to be brutal.
Rooting for you! Thanks for sharing your progress. 😃🙌
Thank you. That means a lot to me. I am so close to the finish line and working harder than I ever have in my life.
@@JustPlaneSilly you have this, Bryan!
I gave James a first like to his first like!
😃
I liked this first like to my first like!
Im gonna use the handsoff procedure on my motorcycle, made me realize what I'm doing when looking for your videos on my phone! Definitely was death gripping, seriously good tip 👍🏽Thanks
I got my PPL in 2002 out of Sonoma Skypark, 0Q9, come visit us in Napa, KAPC and enjoy some wine. Thanks for the video! 180 HP 1973 C172, tuned exhaust, 40 degrees of flaps, magic carpet ride in that mofo.
Looks like a great way to be unemployed! Thanks for sharing your journey!
I easily get the leans in IMC
I tend to think of the phrase “hard IMC” as meaning prolonged IMC or IMC flying that was very mentally tasking or fatiguing. It’s subjective.
Curious if you think his first leg qualifies? He was in IMC for a sustained period and didn't break out between layers. Also, doing that without an AP would up the stress and fatigue level. I'm not instrument rated though so speculation on my part.
6:20 HOLY FUUUUUUUUG that bit is hilarious, you got me to cough while I was drinking. We have got to figure out how to incorporate this more often. LOVE IT
I found AI at the right time lol
Great NON-CFI "suggestion" ... release the yoke. Unfortunately for us motorcycle drivers, you strive to for that concept of going where you look. I guess the same applies to my golfgame conflicting with my baseball hitting days ... what, the swing is NOT the same??
Great video, right up until that Mooney shot 🤮😉
The foreshadowing someone had to invent steam gauges before IMC existed. 😂 Genius.
I’m sure you’ve already done the Cali trip but if not or if you want a cool place to fly to stop in Sedona Az KSEZ. it’s gorgeous.
Yup, I think that was a cat. Must have been there quite a while to turn into clean skeleton like that. 😔
On your way to Commiefornia, stop at Page, AZ and go to Strombolli's for their "meat lover's" pizza. That and the pizza at Cruiser's in Packwood, WA are the two best pizzas I've had in my life. And then your cost per pizza will drop from $1,000 to $500. Can't beat that!
Also, I'm confused. Are you an instructor, or are you not?
So, a lot like Texas, California is a pretty large state, like two-thirds of the West Coast. I live in the middle of California, Elk Grove / Sacramento area. Where are you going to get pizza in California? Looks like you are having a lot of fun. Take care, and thanks.
In case you're still curious, I'm fairly certain that's a raccoon skull.
I was just hoping it wasn't a pet. We have cats go missing a lot in the neighbor hood and I suspect coyotes are the primary culprit.
How did you get Jacob Collier to sing your, ‘I’m not a cfi’ diddy? Dang!
I dont know who that is but I used an audio AI plugin
great walkthrough.
Let me know if you want to grab the best hot dog in the country together. it's in chicago.
The next time you go to Rough River, stop at KTZV (70 mi SE of RR) and we’ll treat you to Monroe County BBQ. It’s unique, and The NY Times even did an article about it.
You're On!
We always look for a place to fly for BBQ in the area when we are out there.
My first Bonanza didn't have autopilot. I flew "easy" IMC all the time until one day... One day, Day turned to night, "hard" IMC, snow, deteriorating weather and Center kept giving me changes to course to get keep me out of icing.
After surviving that night, I told myself that I would never fly again in IMC, single pilot without an autopilot. Never again, it's just not worth it.
Can I do it? Yes. Should I? No.
Brian you’re doing great and bring a unique perspective to aviation/time building. I’m curious if you are headed to the airlines or is that your secret?
THats the goal. I just hope I can do it. I am scared to death that I am going to fail publicly. I am working so hard to make this happen. I really want to get to a regional.
@@JustPlaneSilly It’ll happen. I’m a 3rd generation small time pilot. I can see you have what it takes. Also watching your channel is a family affair at my house 😆
I still think I was crazy going into full IMC on my first take off after getting my instrument rating.
Low timer here, if you're ever out by KBJC and want company I'll go.
HA!!!!! I was there 2 weeks ago. But it was a trip for our anniversary so I wouldn't have been able to meet up.
So, "keep yer eyes on the road, yer hands upon the wheel" no longer applies? Good thing Olde Jim is dead....
Where you coming in CA? Would love to fly down and say hello!
I am way behind on editing. Already did the trip. had planned to go to Catalina but weather was iffy. So we went to French Valley. It was AWESOME! If I could afford to live out there, I might make the move. It was an amazing place.
@@JustPlaneSilly well you chose 2 good ones! 100% great flying weather here 9-10 months a year. Come back any time.
First! Like for reals
If you could talk a little faster Brian that would be great.
HAHAHAH!!!!!
👍✅👏👏👏
Your description for this video is copied from the Wisconsin cheese video. Might want to take a few minutes of those extra 60 hours a week you have from not having a job to update the description to reflect the contents of this one.
So you're the one reading descriptions lol!!!
Thank you. I did copy paste, and edit but forgot to change the wording after pasting. I need to hit the pause button and slow down just a bit.
@@JustPlaneSilly guilty as charged. Can't imagine the stress of a mid-life career change being shoved onto you a year before you were planning. Nice that you are within striking distance. My son will be doing his own "race to 1k hrs" for an RATP starting in about a year, but that's starting from ~250. His 2-engine certificate should be later this summer. Thank you for having us along for the ride.
I'm truly sorry getting canned has killed yer sense of humor. Now I hafta find another mildly amusing comedy/aircraft channel....
HAHA, I hate that I am not making satire videos right now but I am working so hard I am exhausted. The channel is a couple months behind real life and I am burning the candle at all ends. I have to get this done but I also need what ever money I can squeeze out of the channel to keep it going and the down side is it means a lot of VLOGS for now. ONce I get on the other side we are going to have fun again.
