Vashta Nerada [Doctor Who Theme] is Traffic Experiment's reworking of Ron Grainer and Delia Derbyshire's classic Doctor Who theme, featuring the vocals of the very lovely Harri Norris and recorded with producer George Shilling (of Bernard Butler, Blur, Porcupine Tree fame) at his Bank Cottage studio. TE's very good friend and videographer Rich Wakefield of FX Media filmed the recording and produced this video.
We've always been massive fans of the original piece of music and after debating 'what if Pink Floyd actually covered the Doctor Who Theme' (rather than just the One of These Days... references to it), and having watched the brilliant clip of Peter Howell recreating his version at the BBC, decided we'd do our own take on it. Vashta Nerada was the result and hopefully we've done Ron and Delia's original track justice (with plenty of Floyd and Doctor Who references thrown in for good measure).
The audio track is available to download for free as a high quality mp3 or FLAC file for our registered fans here (it's completely free to sign up - no spam, we promise!): www.trafficexpe...

11 years later and this still rocks! 💙
I can't believe I only just discovered this! I've subscribed to the channel. Have you done a Blake's 7 theme?
This video was only posted 10 years ago…
I can't believe it's been that long, I still remember when it first came out
I love it. Great way to pay homage to Peter Howell (who did the theme in this key) and Peter Davison (whose Fifth Doctor got me into the series).
If Pink Floyd had been asked to compose the theme for Doctor Who, this would be it. Absolutely incredible!
What if twelve played that on his guitar
Malice Catastrophe | What if Brilliant idea?
As homage to thirteen?
yes, plz!!!
That would be cool
Well he's gone now so he can't.
I'm in tears. This is fantastic guys and by far the best, and most emotional rendition of the Doctor Who theme I have ever heard. Thank you all so much for creating this rock Sci-fi masterpiece.
+Bob Wilcox And thank you for listening Bob! Your comments are hugely appreciated. TE
@@TrafficexperimentNet was searching on Amazon, but can't find it for buying this great visionary file. Can you help me?
Me 2
this is for everyone not just doctor who fans. beyond incredible work guys.
+Emre Karaman Thank you Emre!
+Music by Traffic Experiment You're very welcome.
One of these days the BBC’s gonna come to their senses and make a theme like this.
One of these days.
@William Hazevoets yea but that was no where NEAR this beautiful masterpiece
They have been scared of any sort of bass since series 5
I see what you did there. One of these days is an amazing song. This is good cover
*IMA GONNA CUT YOU INTO LITTLE PIECES*
Why? They had Delia Derbyshire's 1963 version which knocks this into a hat!
We are planning on playing this as our encore song at some live UK gigs in 2013 :)
I'm still listening in 2021.. It's a damn shame they never used this version for the show..
Still listening in 2022
Just discovered it in 2023! 😲🎶😊👍
@@f22photos 2024 is here :)
I think I may have missed it
Shine On You Crazy Doctor
One of these doctors is going to cut you into little pieces 🖖🏻
If a second Doctor Who movie is made, they MUST USE this as the intro! It would be so spine-chillingly awesome...
Forth movie. 2 with Peter Cushin, and one with Paul Megan.

I love the little nods to the Davison-era theme in there. Great stuff!
Hands down my favourite version of the theme.. It's like queen scored doctor who
That is one hell of a compliment!
@@thisisthewronghat2706 that's how it was intended :)
Wow, this might be in my top 3 Doctor Who themes, along with the 1963 and 1980 versions. The theme should have a haunting quality to it - which I think is missing in the overproduced modern versions - and this really nails it. Awesome.
now imagine a universe where Jimi Hendrix was the doctor
WOULD JIMI HENDRIX WEAR A FEZ??
This is by far the most amazing cover version of the Doctor Who theme that I have ever heard! ♥ ♥ ♥ I especially love the way you did the part nearer the end done with vocals, it is very moving. ☺
One of the most brilliant Doctor Who Theme variants I have ever heard!!! Well done and bravo Traffic Experiment!
Thank you Aaron!
cant believe this is 11 years ago, very good, i would love to see a sort of "re-make" for the 60th!
fucking epic.... If I had heard this in 1979 when I was 7 it would have made my brain explode
It's like Pink Floyd Meets Dr. Who LOL Great job !!
12 years on and it's still the best version of the theme
this is dreamy , Ron Grainer would salute you
This is so full of win it hurts.
I thought this was Pink Floyd when I heard it.
WOW. Thats all i can say :)
If you love Traffic Experiment check out more of their music and this tune used in the fan audio series Doctor Who Dark Journey Doctor Who Dark Journey - The Doctor Meets the Great Detective - Episode 1
12 years on and it's still epic!
Best version ever. Love everything about it, progginess, headphones, analog synthesizers, my favourite instrumentation lineup (guitar, bass, drums, keys, vox)...even the cat cameo.
You have done what both Delia and Peter did with Ron Grainers score which is turn it in to something magical.
Coming back to Who a decade later and I can’t believe this hasn’t passed 1mil in that time. There can be no other version for me anymore.
As both a Doctor Who fan and musician, I love this. Great stuff
Could just picture the 12th doctor playing this on his guitar in the tardis ❤
SpecialThanksToTrafficExperimentForTheUseOfTheirSongVashtaNerada(DoctorWhoTheme) is permanently burned into my brain by Verity.
The more I here this, the more i love.
And her voice, like a spirit of Nature that bring your solo apart, and tha rebuil it, again and again.
...and I'm an ateist.
You've done a piece of art, I wish you to become rally famous worldwide, there is a lot of not-music being, you deserve all the best.
Music, that's real music.
just hangin' with these gold records
pink floyd and doctor who you cant get any better than this
I would die to hear this on the actual show. Petition them!!! I'll be the first to sign!!!
It's not like they don't know of it since it was used for the 50th anniversary premiere show
that's the nirvana.
shake out in the cold, I can not get tired of it
Discovered this through Doctor Who Dark Journey... fantastic rendition, you can tell the musicians are fans. Lots of nods to both classic and new... great song guys and gals!!!
Paul Alves Thank you! :)
Thanks! We thought we should do something special with it for the 50th Anniversary so are doing a Collector's Edition vinyl release (see link in the video description).
So many hidden gems on the internet.
i still cant believe this got only 141k views. Deserves so so much more!
Reminds me more of Doctor Who meets Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells, but well made.
Yup, this!
RUclips recommends me years after I listened to it on a loop.
Don't mind if I do.
Discovered it 5 years ago and it still sounds so good
This is now my favorite version of the theme.
Absolutely incredible... and after all these years there is nothing this good out there! Well done, folks!
During the Interregnum (1996-2005) I liked to compose an arrangement in my head of an epic version of the DW theme song. This isn't what I imagined -- it is far, far superior! Congratulations and thank you!
Brilliant. Your love for the music and the show, as well as your appreciation for how traditionally technology driven the theme has always been, is so apparent. This is beautiful - thank you.
bloody hell, i've watch this too many times
Happy 10 year anniversary to this video!
DAT BASSLINE
The Great Gig In The Whoniverse? :-) Wonderful stuff, great sound design and great musicianship!
i like it so much I keep coming back and hitting replay over and over and over
Really slick! I wish this was the version that played when my dad watched Dr Who late late at night.
Almost skipped this because of the long intro, but the Music was still pulling at me. So glad i didnt! Amazing!
what're u talking about mate the long intro is hypnotic makes u wanna fall backwards and drown yourself in it
Just...SO good. Who meets Mike Oldfield. Love it.
Great version of an all time classic theme. Pink Floyd keyboard player, the late Rick Wright, sneaks a bar of the tune into a track on 'Pulse'. Nice to see you guys doing it justice.
Wow, just wow. I'm off to lob a chicken drumstick under a table in your honour.
i must cry bcs this is so epic!! best custom remake i have ever heared!!!! brilliant...
Easily the best alternative version of the theme I have ever heard, it's now on my daily playlist as I work. A special nod to the beautiful Harri Norris. No idea if she went on to better things but her vocals are absolutely spot on, a very talented woman and hauntingly gets in your head. Thank you all.
I love how they took a house and converted it into all these different recording studios with a main mixing room. Fantastic!
I love the little touches this has, like the part of Howell's synth thrown in. Ordered it on vinyl nontheless!
Which part of the Howell theme? Can't hear it.
EDIT: nevermind I just got to that part lol
Sounds like a mix between Pink Floyd and Doctor Who! I love it!
Two words: Absolutely Fantastic!
If I was ever to play the doctor, I would insist on this as my theme!
This is "Fantastic!" , I love it :3.
So Cool
Seriously how do you not have more subs, hits and likes. It ain't right
So who is due to hearing it on the Verity Podcast as their theme?
Fantastic take on an iconic theme. Well done to all concerned! Fab!!!
I love this version so much, I would love the TV show or Big Finish Productions to use this!
Wow! this absolutely amazing....love to see this live in a big stadium with a astronomical light show. This is now my favourite version. You can reinvent the past 👍🎸🥁🎹🎤❤️😎
The vocals gets me by surprise. Make me cry... so beautiful.
You did a very, very good work here.
An amazing performance. It reminds me of the Pink Floyd track Echoes (from their 1971 album Meddle). Thanks for the free download!
Watch Pink Floyd's Live in Earls Court 1994 Pulse DVD. I'm sure keyboard player Richard Wright slips in a bar of the Dr Who theme in the track 'One of these Days'.
CaptainNemo1701 Nah, it was definitely rhythm guitarist Tim Renwick. He did the same thing in Delicate Sound of Thunder, too.
they also had a habit of doing it during live performances of "Embryo"
This started off with a bit of a Mike Oldfield vibe at the start which I really liked!
This has to be the greatest version ever! It just makes the soul sing! You have made this dr Who fan very very happy by producing this difinitive version. This would be great if they ever did a stage rock musical version of Dr who which would be awesome I think. Truly amazing guys!
Gave me chills
always said dr who sounds best when rocked up in this fashion because it pulls you in and the electric guitar rips away at your soul. its the only version thats ever made me cry. sounds stupid but its true. this is till now THE BEST VERSION EVER RECORDED....the BBC should use this. its so bloody haunting! which is what the original was. thats why it became so pinned in childrens minds. guys im gushing with praise for you all with this. A massive thank you for pkaying dr who as it should always have been.
+Steve Callum Thanks Steve. Really appreciate your kind comments. We tried hard to keep some of that atmosphere from the earlier versions while still making it different. My introduction to Doctor Who was during the Peter Davison era so Peter Howell's version is the one that haunts my childhood memories (though all the prior ones are brilliant too) and that's why there's a few nods to that particular version in this. Stuart (TE).
I just found this beautiful work and I'm so glad I did! Pure genius! That's all I can say, because Steve Callum put the rest of it perfectly ^_^
Mind = Blown! Simply amazing work!!
I'm addicted to this
Probably my all-time favourite alternative version of the theme - amazingly well done.
Ron and Delia would love this version
ive said it before n ill say it again this is the best version of dr who ive ever heard.
No. They're trying to do a "what if our band covered this theme song." Sounded great to me, don't know why you have a hard time just enjoying this :P
This is an absolutely phenomenal re-imagining of the theme. It's so different yet so familiar.
So very nice...
Like the different style. Fantastic.
Absolutely awesome! And based on the strength of this I downloaded the sampler EP then bought the album.
My dad listens to a lot of Floyd. This brought back many happy childhood memories. Thank you so much!!
Brilliant video and excellent version of the track.
2:44-4:55 Lost curated in march 7 2006 episode vibe and Early Modern Era Vibes 4:56-5:52 1984, 2005, and late 12th doctor vibes
Love this song .
As above, yes of course. Glad you enjoyed it enough to want to use it. A credit in the title sequence would be fabulous! :)
Hang on! I had this in my DW playlist under the title Doctor Who meets Pink Floyd but it got taken down by the BBC for copyright reasons. So glad it was reposted and I could hear it again. It kept coming up in my recommendations, think the algorithms were telling me something!
Everything about this is perfect. Amazingly well done all around. I had to grab the download - looking forward to repeat listens.
Oh my goodness yes.
Okay, here's something I thought I would never say about any piece of music - this version is better than the original composition and all the many different versions that the show's producers have done!!! Truly amazing guys!!
I always think of this cover when I think of the 50th. Such a great time.
The female vocals just adds that extra dimension to it, its a Work of Art just Brilliant !
