To put in context, my parents towed a sprite musketeer which was a heavyweight compared with an Austin A60 and 4 people which were about 50bhp I think, although car very heavy compared. Painfully slow on hills etc but still went to Cornwall and scotland from the midlands
Well done Oliver! A great review of a niche part of towing with a small car and a lightweight caravan. I have towed with a small car which had a max weight of 1435 kg (kerb weight 1090kg) and only had 99bhp and 130Nm of torque, the caravan weighed 900kg. It is a massive compromise and you have to manage your expectations of performance and how much extra weight you can add to the car or van. Eventually I changed my car out to something a bit bigger which took out a lot of anxiety of the towing experience.
Good video informative too. Found it interesting and it's made me convinced I don't need to change cars , not bad economy either. Well done Oliver . Eamonn
No harm in stirring the box and reving the motor, I did exactly the same many years ago with my 1.6 Vectra 90 bhp and my Swift Classic Corvette behind. Thanks for sharing Oliver.
Thanks Guys! I would love to see some more people caravanning at a young age which is why the Young Caravanners Facebook group is fantastic. Cheers, Oliver.
Looked the bees knees when you drove off the pitch and out of the gate Oliver. If 25mpg is average then that’s not bad at all. Keep on touring. Cheers, Rob
Hi Oliver, On my first solo trip out with the Freedom Jetstream and the Ford Puma, I got some 'pitching'. I'd inadvertently left the Truma water system full of water ! Second trip out, I ensured the system was drained and I'd stuck more 'stuff' in the car boot. I'd also removed the heavy freestanding table (which I had no plans to ever use) to the wardrobe at home ! Much better 😉
Good video Olliver... great to see you out and about solo caravanning. I did my first solo trip the other week without Clare and Mike... felt strange. Not sure about 25mpg being good as I get 27 - 29mpg towing with my heavy 4x4 and twin axle caravan. Having said that the setup you have is fantastic to gain experience and at your age you are keeping the running costs ie: insurance down. Best of luck to you in your adventures. Ian...
I tow a twin axel abbey with a Ford s max and I get looks on site, it tows really well, completely legal, you get people who think you need a range rover for twin axels. Glad your enjoying your car and caravan and congrats on the job.
Hello, I think the caravan I just bought has a capacity of 850-900kg; I towed it with a seat ibiza 1.4 85 hp 6j vehicle. My impressions are that the vehicle can be considered sufficient, but a powerful car is better. Of course, I will continue as my economic situation is sufficient for this at the moment, it is necessarily a bit challenging, especially on steep slopes. Still beautiful 😉
We got given a Bailey ranger 460/2 which is about 1000kg. I've got a 2019 SEAT Leon with a 1.5 turbo engine (130Hp, 200nm torque at 1500 to 4000 revs). Watching this video has given some confidence in shouldn't have any real issues as it seems approximately equivalent to this setup, slightly bigger car but slightly heavier van
1 min in and I’m already writing a comment… when emptying the Wastemaster if you open the cap nearest the handle it empties much quicker and no gluggling.
Great video Oliver, I was concerned whether I needed to change my tow car, when buying a slightly heavier caravan, I think you've alleviated some of my fears.
Hi we are looking at the Bailey we have the 155 bhp 1ltr puma but was worried it would not be blue to tow it so bought a go pod. We have now sold the go pod and looking at Bailey again
Sorry just seen this comment as it went to held for review..? Anyway, you’ll be fine with a 155hp Puma mine was 100hp and was okay so an extra 55hp will do the job perfectly.
Great video 👍🏼 I’ve watched all your videos on your D4-2 me and my partner love them so cute and stylish, am looking to get a D4-2 hopefully soon 🤞🏼 and I also have a 1 litre is a Nissan Juke 2021 if you have any advice on car or D4-2 I’d be grateful ☺️
Firstly great choice on the Discovery! Such a brilliant caravan, I've got no experience unfortunately we your car but if you have any D4-2 questions please do let me know. Thanks for watching, Oliver.
I more likely be getting a Skoda Kamiq 1.5 tsi as my first car (if I drive) & I'm thinking about getting a caravan same size as you but I will more likely buy a much older short wheelbase caravan for less than a grand. & I think you might be able to drive a caravan certain length without taking additional test
The B&E test was removed last year you can now tow any caravan upto the weight of 3500kg with any tow car on a standard licence. Hope they helps, Oliver.
@@CaravanningwiththeCoxs Thank you very much. I will definitely start with a small caravan as it's easier to tow & I will also only be using just for myself & I will more likely ask my parents to teach me some basics. Keep up the good work 👍
Hi there, how did you manage to get the nose weight low enough for the fiesta when you had it as I know most caravans are nose heavy, especially for smaller cars, thanks Liam.
Thanks for this Oliver. How heavy is your caravan?? I was surprised to hear you only get 25mpg. I was thinking of getting a Fiesta 1.0 ecoboost as we currently tow with my husbands 4x4 truck and I thought this might be more economical, but perhaps not then. Good to know. Also, i was considering an automatic Ford Fiesta, do you think this will be worse for towing? Thanks!
Hi Claire, my Discovery is 995kgs for daily use it’s reasonably economical but for towing not so. I personally wouldn’t go out to buy this car as a towcar as I only use it as it was my then current car. I now tow with an Auto and it’s really good but not sure on how good the Fiesta Auto is. Thanks for watching, Oliver.
no reason for a 100hp car t ostruggle with alightweight caravan... i dont think idiots today realise that 2 litre cortine or granada was only 90hp. a volvo 2 litre was only 85hp and we all used to tow a lot lot more than tiny caravans and never had any problems.. twin wheel 2 litre transit 90hp.. if you have anything heavy and it will fit then put it in the front passenger footwell so you keep a bit of weight on the front axle.. have the caravanm loaded so you can just lift the tow hitch and you will not get any snaking... and the gear lever is there to use when you need it...
Fiesta is only rated to tow 900kg and the MTPLM of the van is 995kg. How do you make sure your under 900kg?. I can see you have a bike rack on the van, that alone may put you over 900kg.
Hi there and thanks for the comment. Might be worth checking out my Towbar fitting video and seeing my Vin Plate. My Fiesta can tow 1000kg👍🏻 ruclips.net/video/TcZNIfE8HcU/видео.html Thanks for watching, Oliver
@@CaravanningwiththeCoxs good to hear you're pushing the limit without issue. Always reading about weights and limits and I always thought it wasn't advisable to run so close to max weights?
Hi, I have Suzuki celerio 835kg 67bhp 1-litre, it's only allowed to tow 400kg braked, I've seen a trailer which weighs 100kg and want transport a 100kg trials bike, so would be within the limits, do you think it would be feasible regarding hill starts etc? Thanks

Hi Rich, I have since changed my car if you watch some more of my videos👍 however, breaks were fine and as good as my current car and stability was fine and if a snake occurred it could control the caravan absolutely fine. Thanks for watching, Oliver.
Well done to you Oliver you should be proud of yourself you have loads of confidence 👏👏👏👏👏👍
Thanks for the positive feedback Liz, I am glad you enjoyed the video😀

It was so slow but it got me hooked for life….

lean will pull it with ease..
Thanks for the video. Very useful as I'm just looking into what vans I could tow with my 109hp Polo.
Oliver you are awesome mate you have got some confidence

pull a caravan with a 1 liter turbo is not a problem i drive a polo 1.2 bluemotion with a big homecare easely

Hi there, how did you manage to get the nose weight low enough for the fiesta when you had it as I know most caravans are nose heavy, especially for smaller cars, thanks Liam.
Luckily for me when Bailey designed the Discovery is was made purposely nose light to accomodate the bike rack so I never had an issue.
you need atleast 70 kilo on the noseweight to be safe towing anything.. the more noseweight the less chance of swaying..

so what your saying is that your realy thick and dont know if 200 kilos is heavier than 400 kilo ? you will only be pulling 200 kilo so why even ask
The low BHP will make hill starts difficult
