    I dunno. I feel like Cassie might be the worst, because not only did she sleep her best friend's ex, but it was her best friend's ABUSIVE ex. • @lithium4246

      As much as I think what she did was despicable, I would argue that because he is abusive, she fell for it even more because abusive men are usually more manipulative, she felt like she knew him and then when they started doing something together that she knew him better than Maddie ever did, that’s a recurrent mindset of the next woman with abusive men it’s like ok that happened to you, but it won’t happen to me because I’m different very main character syndrome

    The issue is that the shows always glorify the cheating and never show the consequences. ESPECIALLY if the cheater is the MC. And if they show show the consequences, they almost always lowkey get glorified too, in an “oh we are so hurt and now we can’t be together my star-crossed lover 😩” manner
    And if real life situations, like the Ariana-Ethan scandal, is anything to go by, IRL not-girl girls will still be defended and glorified too

    • @uniraffesaur
      @uniraffesaur 3 месяца назад +18

      The number of times a romantic partner exists solely as an obstacle between the two romantic leads getting together 💀
      And the other partner is always vilified for not being as perfect a match for the love interest as the main character regardless of if they’re actually a villain or not. And it’s always framed in a way that we’re meant to cheer when the two leads finally get together (often before the other partner has been left), and the other partner getting dumped for the main character is just like “🤷🏻‍♀️ sucks to suck, glad they’re out of the way”.
      And HOW OFTEN does this moment happen when the love interest and other partner are getting engaged or about to get married, and so the love interest calls off their engagement/wedding for the main character?? And we’re not supposed to feel for this other partner who was left just before their wedding for another person??
      The Jim/Pam/Karen triangle is such a good example of this. People HATED Karen and treated her like the villain for coming between Jim and Pam, when really, Karen was literally just trying to have a healthy relationship with a man who was using her to run away from his feelings for a woman who rejected him. Karen did nothing wrong. Jim dragged her along and Pam was happy to wedge herself in there.

    • @CiaLaVirago
      @CiaLaVirago 3 месяца назад +7

      Referring to the IRL Ariana/Ethan scandal, i disagree: they have both received a lot of backlash. The reason why there's still people defending them (especially Ariana) it's because on one hand they're not random people, they're celebrities with a fanbase, mostly made up of very young people.
      On the other hand, Ariana Grande has recently completely rebranded her image as the epitome of delicate, vulnerable femininity that's just a victim of the media.
      This rebrand was incredibly effective, because now, instead of appearing as a shameless sex kitten, she is this tragic princess in the throes of the whims of love, who couldn't help but to feel the way she felt for Ethan.
      So yeah, she's being excused a lot, but that's because she's an exception, not the rule.

      It’s funny because this is a situation that happened to me in real life, except the person cheating was a girl and the best friend was a guy (for context, I’m somewhat a girl [still figuring that out] or at least I was in high school) and obviously I was furious at both of them. The strangest thing about it was my ex actually owned up to how shitty she was being and actively tried to work on herself/apologize (took a few years, but she definitely made up for it in that time) while my best friend, even YEARS after it happened, _bragged_ about it to me. He kept going on and on about how he was so much better at “satisfying her” and how much more inferior to him I was because he was able to “steal my girl”. They’re broken up now and it’s since come up that he SAed her multiple times (as well as other women DURING the relationship) and she’s in a much happier relationship (with a woman) while he’s still hopelessly single. It’s not even just an “it’s always the cheater’s fault” as much as it’s “men have WAY too much fucking pride”
      (And yes, obviously a huge amount of the blame is on her. But at the same time it was very much a “Good Luck Babe” kind of situation and her mother was _not_ happy she was with me and _adores_ my ex-best friend, even after all the shitty things he did came up. CompHet exists for a reason, I guess)

    This literally made me wonder about entire generation of girls. It is standard Girl Code that any man they like is off limits! If she's a good friend even if she never gets the guy you don't touch that guy. It's also girl code when you go to a party or a club together you leave together. You do not let your friends pass out in a room by themselves and if they're drunk you take them home so somebody won't take advantage of them. It's a matter of safety and respect and it seems like at least on TV they don't want girls looking out for each other in order to make us weak😢

    I agree, making the main character not a girl's girl sends the wrong message and I don't even understand where or how this trend started.
    One of my least favorites of this trend is Gilmore Girls because Rory was briefly reprimanded for it and then everyone acted like nothing happened

      My guess is that it happens as a way for men to excuse cheating and shift the blame to someone else, and they get the added bonus of pitting women against each other

  • @sarahm6403
    @sarahm6403 3 месяца назад +12

    I mean, I think that, when it actually happens in real life, it is a way more complicated scenario than what it is shown on TV and guys are to blame too ! Sadly, between girls, it can have a lot of competitions, especially at a young age when they lack a lot of confidence. I am not saying that these behaviors are forgivable but understanable and that society is tough on women. It leads them to compete against themselves and sometimes it goes on them arguing over the same guy because of jalousy and lack of self esteem.

      As much as we should blame full grown women for knowingly going after a taken man, I feel we should also acknowledge that the man isn't completely innocent. Of course, if you thought you were going after a taken man, that's a red flag, but the man also shouldn't cheat on his girlfriend/wife. Both the 'homewrecker' and the man are to blame in this situation, unless the homewrecker didn't know he was taken, which of course means the man lied to her and we should wholly blame him.

      Apologies! I should’ve said it right at the beginning of the video but 21:33 I acknowledge these guys are all pieces of sh*t too! The main point I’m trying to make here is the specifics of these being main characters we’re supposed to be rooting for with little to no consequences for these actions whereas for the men in these scenarios they aren’t main characters and in cases like Nate Jacobs and Tripp from Gossip Girl the show does frame them as pieces of sh*t which is great but with the girls they don’t hold them as much accountable if that makes sense?💕

    I understand why Cassie gets the hate, I do and she fully deserves it but I give her a little bit of grace because she has rampant daddy issues however I absolutely hate Serena and Emily, because they pretend to take accountability but they don’t. Serena slept with her best friends boyfriend and we looked past that because “Nate and Blair were not meant to be”, but then she kept “falling in love” with taken people. They take absolutely no accountability but the show makes the wife or the girlfriend “mean” so we can be okay with the fact that this MC has no moral compass.. not adding that Serena did this to Blair TWICE lol

    i generally agree with you but i feel like in films and tv shows lots of characters do insane things (like even murder) where the audience still roots for them and is supposed to (vampire diaries, prison break, game of thrones, la casa de papel). it does make a character more interesting i guess (while it also really depends on what kinda show you're watching...) but i also don't like seeing the "not-girls girl character" being glorified so i'm 50/50 on this topic yk

      Murder is illegal.
      Cheating is vile.
      There's the difference.
      There's instances in which murder can be justified (self defence, etc) but there's not, and will never be a justification for cheating. It's not something that you do because you had no choice or your hand was forced. It's something you do because you're a bad person.
      That's all.

    • @VampyreCadaver
      @VampyreCadaver Месяц назад +1

      @CiaLaVirago But that's not true though? Cheating is usually a result of an unhappy relationship, hypersexuality, trauma, abuse etc. Like a lot of ppl do it because they're total dirtbags, but ofc there's causes behind it and it's not as bad as murder lol.

    Every day that goes by, I am more and more grateful that I bailed on Emily In Paris after the first five minutes of the pilot. I just got a bad vibe _immediately._
    Also, we need more Legally Blonde type plots. Where the girls hated each other over a man but in the end they were like “we ruined a potential friendship over _that_ loser? Fuck him, we’re gonna build a friendship even though the world tried to tear us apart and leave that asswipe behind,” rather than the friends forgiving and forgetting like it was absolutely nothing.

    It made me so mad the way people were defending Cassie for literally fucking her best friends abusive ex-boyfriend and the big excuse was that she had daddy issues and abandonment issues and she sexualized herself for validation and the love she never got. I empathize with her character, but I definitely do not sympathize with her character. she knew what she was doing was wrong and she continued to do it? then afterwards she has the audacity to stand by Nate and insult her sister at her show because she’s humiliated by the action she made.

      Except not really. A lot of the time, girl will be a homewrecker, and then the rest of the world will bend over backwards to reassure her it's ok, it's not her fault, or romanticise the whole situation as a "star crossed lovers" type of romance.
      The problem with the trope is that it's never done right. And the consequences are never what they're supposed to be.
