Thank you for sharing. The Color Need channel released a video today (feb 4th, 2025) about a different way to pick colors by using the latest science about how we perceive color. The video is titled: choosing colors with confidence. I think his approach is so useful to be more creative and don’t be too concerned about following specific recipes.
I just saw it! It was a Ti (introverted intuitive) way of explaining color. It’s interesting his way made you think it was not being specific as I found it very specific 🧐I enjoyed the video thanks for sharing. I agree that the “traditional color theory” can be misleading at times and it doesn’t quite capture the complexities of how colors behave. I do love the Munsell Color System, which organizes color based on three attributes: hue, value (lightness), and chroma (intensity). I feel this is the best approach so far out there that I can stick to.
@ I can see your point about him being specific :). I think mostly is that there is more to explore while still being constrained by some rules. He has 2 previous video where he talks about using character that I also recommend: “You are wrong about color harmony” and “Color theory you never learned: Hue Planes” I believe he doesn’t use the Munsell Color System though, he mostly uses CIElab which is a more modern color system. Munsell system has some issues how hues are plotted around the circle specially with reds (it’s too big, if I remember correctly). Originally CIElab had issues with blues, but the new version has fixed this. By the way, Handprint uses the CIElab system too. Also, Munsell is not too bad for paints, but it’s not good at all for digital mediums, textiles and others. CIElab also works well for those industries but the latest version is too slow for computers. So, now there is a new system named OKlab. The web standards, and other groups are pushing Adobe/Procreate/etc to provide color pickers based in this model since their current color pickers are awful. Color Nerd and Marco Bucci have videos about this, Marco Bucci video: “Something strange you should know about color” and Color Nerd’s “Adobe’s garbage color wheel” and “don’t use procreate’s color wheel”. I should stop the nerd stuff here :)
Fascinating! I guess I only paint but because of watercolors transparent nature (not needing white to change value), Munsell doesn’t quite work either at times as it doesn’t account for this luminosity of using the white of the paper. But regardless I try to keep my head simple and stick to what’s working for me 🤣 I’ll look into these! Sounds fun!!!🤩
@@MiwaGardner totally get it. At the end of the day, nothing beats hands on experience. I noticed the same issue with Munsell when you want to paint transparently with Acrylics and Oils by using mediums (indirect vs direct methods). That system fails when you want to work that way. Thank you for the fun conversation.
This is such an interesting video! What a cool tool to help with colour 😊 thank you for sharing!
You’re very welcome! I’m glad it’s helped you! There’s always couple of ways but i hope one will resonate ❤️
