Costly Russian STORM-Z Assault on Fortress Avdiivka

  • Russia launched a massive offensive against the fortress city of Avdiivka. Although the first assaults have been costly for the Russian Armed Forces, with a large portion of their armored components eroded, they are only a couple kilometres away from encircling the Ukrainian stronghold. Only vivid counterattacks and proper supply lines can save the Ukrainian garrison.

On the social network X (formerly Twitter), pro-Ukrainian OSINT projects are slowly being closed.
Over the past month, the Oryx and Ukraine Weapons Tracker accounts, which were engaged in counting losses in the SMO zone, stopped working, and the Caliber Obscura project recently announced its imminent closure.
Despite the fact that Oryx and CO were actively working before the Ukrainian conflict, a distinctive feature for all three was the biased presentation of information, distortion of statistics, smoothing of angles when covering Ukrainian losses and savoring the losses of the Russian Armed Forces.
Perhaps the closure of these projects is due to the end of the fiscal year in the United States in October, or perhaps due to the redistribution of the budget for media support in Ukraine, which is gradually weakening

I'd be very sceptical about 'huge' Russian losses near Avdeevka. So far none of the Russian units (including Pyatnashka, Storm and 114th brigades) near Avdeevka have pulled out. Usually if your unit took 50% losses you retreat then fill up the ranks with fresh troops, work on units cohision before returning to the front line...if ever - depending on losses. It takes time while you're replaced with other brigades. None of this is happening. The amount of the burned vehicals doesn't tell much because there was an ongoing battle for Avdeevka since 2014. A lot of armored vehicles have accumulated there

The 20k elite soldiers must eat, drink, shit, sleep every day. Oh, and fight maybe. If they don't get supplies, because the city is surrounded they won't last too long.

If Russia wanted to obliterate Ukraine, they would have done it long time ago, this new front is still Russia not taking Ukraine seriously. The fact people thought trench warfare are obsolete, and instantly proved wrong when this war started.
This new front, Russian losses are not even considered bad by them, I told many this few months, attacking the south east was the stupidest thing Ukraine can do in the offensive, because east and north east would be next for Russia, its not a problem unless Russia can easily flank Ukraine soldiers attacking South East, which they can if they succeed. I'm thinking Russia expected casualties to reach 200k with 10k KIA minimum and they will keep pushing as long as they dont reach either numbers. It doesn't matter how tough it will be, it doesn't matter how many vehicles Russia loses, compared to the west, their tanks are cheaper. Or to allow the garrison of Avdiivka to retreat to be able to take Avdiivka faster and with less resistance.
Or they could try to close the pincers, who knows.

While none of us know for sure, if you look at what Russia has achieved since, it makes sense. And if we look at the losses, even the wild propaganda claims from the UK - Russian losses are tiny compared to Ukrainian losses in there offensive... And Russia will take a far, far bigger prize. There's a lot of talk about the great Russian losses from commentators...
And yet, based on what's coming from the ground, from actual Russian soldiers, they do NOT consider there to have been large losses and basically just states that things are going "mostly according to plans" and that while "would have preferred faster and more success, things were still proceeding much better than the worst case planning". With Berdychi and Stepove obviously being not quite openly referred to as the unsuccessful parts.
One mapper that had gotten something similar through personal contacts suggested that Russia used a lot of remote controlled vehicles to basically stage a diversion of massed tanks as an explanation for the disparity. With previous Russian use of RC tanks, it's not out of the question.
Regardless, Russia does not seem in any way uncertain or worried about it. Nothing like when they DID take heavy losses against Ugledar.

During that period, 4,800 Abrams were built, coming out to 50 tanks built per month for each of the eight years. It will take a significant amount of work to get our tank production up to the levels we need for the Abrams fleet, but production capacity can be gradually expanded through sustained funding, which is exactly the thing that multiyear procurement contracts provide."

In a way, not much has changed since WW2: even eighty years ago, armoured formations would tend to come to grief if sent up against a well-equipped infantry unit that was prepared and ready for them. Longer-range artillery and more surveillance makes it easier for the infantry to be ready, but the same principles basically apply.

    • @eliasziad7864
      @eliasziad7864 8 месяцев назад +4

No it is not shocking at all. You just dont know military history. WW2, for an example, 60 Soviet/German/American tanks would be destroyed in a single day in one location trying to breakthrough due to anti-tank guns and mines.
The reason why successful armored assaults doesn't work as spectacularly today as back in ww2 is simply due to the lack of creative tactics by either Russian or Ukrainian commanders.
For an example, during ww2, the Germans would always send the infantry first to hinder the front or destroy AT guns and take territory where then large armored formations would exploit the chaos created by the infantry and crush the enemy's front, which leads to breakthroughs.
Today, what we see both Russia and Ukraine doing is that instead of sending infantry first, they would simply send the armor in first without hindering the enemy's front with the hope that armor would force enemy infantry to retreat.
If Russia wants to launch a successful armored assault, 3 things would have to be done.
      1. pre-designated every location of enemy artillery guns, the day of the offensive starts means enemy artillery should be destroyed or suppressed, this would be a huge advantage to attacking armor. Destroying enemy artillery should be top priority.
      2. When first launching the offensive, instead of destroying the first line of defense, Russian artillery/MLRS should destroy the SECOND line of defense. Destroying the second line of defense is much more effective then destroying the first because the second line of defense is where the enemy has its reinforcements and ATGM positions. This would leave the first defense line isolated where fast-moving Russian DRGs can pop up from behind the first line of defense and destroy retreating enemy units. It could also prevent the enemy from launching counter-attacks.
      3. To destroy the first line of defense when launching an offensive, Russia would have to employ cheap and creative tactics in order to reduce losses. A good example would be large amounts of fast-moving, unmanned kamikaze cars and trucks. Russia could bring tons of Lada cars or pickup trucks where they can fill it with deadly explosives such as vacuum bombs, sending waves of these vehicles towards the enemy's first line of defenses would not only obliterate it, but also cause chaos within the ranks of defending troops. Immediately after, Russian tanks and infantry should start moving towards them where accurate tank shelling would leave the surviving defenders confused and force them to retreat which then they will run into Russian DRGs behind them. An important option for an armored assault is to deploy lots of smoke grenades and shells, which I barely see from any armored assault. This should make the disorganized enemy even more blind.
With the combination coordination of destroying pre-designated enemy artillery, destroying the second line of defenses, and destroying the first line of defenses with cheap kamikaze cars and coordinated infantry + armored assault would almost certainly mean 100% success within a day or two. If the enemy has a third line of defenses, which is likely the weakest one, Russian firepower could switch its focus there where it could be demolished but will still inflict losses on advancing Russian columns due to having been alerted unlike the first or second defense lines. After crossing into the enemy's rear, fast-moving vehicles like MRAPS or simply armored cars could start occupying lots of territory and encircle the enemy in Avdiivka. Speed is key to success.
3 important bonuses to also launching a successful breakthrough would be
      1. Assuming the enemy has minefields, it is incredibly important to have lots of thermal drones coordinating with the armor to avoid any spotted mines ahead, thermal drones can absolutely detect minefields since the majority of the enemy's mines are not even dug in but rather remotely mined and in the open. One way to clear a path is to send unmanned mine-resistant vehicles to clear paths through mines, it is also important to have tanks to be equipped with mine-plowers.
      2. EW systems either ground or helicopters which should significantly reduce losses from being harassed from FPV drones but also can blind enemy since they cannot use their drones. 3. Important to take the time to build cages, including cope cages, around tanks and armored vehicles to prevent being harassed from drones but also increase the survivability of these vehicles with infantry inside.

1.They are sending armor ahead, because the combat is taking place 20-30km away
How the FUCK are you supposed to have infantry walking 30km? This is half an hour for a tank to cover
30km btw is what roman soldiers walking in a day would cover
And the Javelin missile? That weighs 50lbs for 1 shot, not including water, rations etc.. The Russian Kornet? 65 lbs for the 5km version oh yeah and the stand is not included
      -----------------------------
Your suggestions literally don't work, because the artillery is hidden, they build covers out of wood, cover them in leaves, and then use these to cover their artillery.
They pop open briefly, fire a couple of shots before they put up the covers again
The AGTM crews are literally hiding in dugouts, google it if you aren't familiar dugouts are not trenches and they afford a much higher level of protection. You would have like 1 guy hiding in a dugout, with a AGTM and a couple of reloads
      ---------------------------------
So you are entering a mine field, people are popping out of the ground and launching AGTM's and then popping back into the ground , Artillery is firing at you for less than a minute before they are covered by leaves again
      --------------------------------------
They did bomb and hit with MLRS everything that they thought was a fortification but thats not enough there are forests and cover still, there are still places where people can dig holes and hide in the ground
But now Russia is launching their offensive, and they are doing it by sending the armor, letting the armor take hits, to reveal the positions of Ukranian artillery and AGTM operators and trying to remove them with lancets and counter battery
And they are losing vehicles to minefields, AGTM's artillery. but thats the price of a offensive vs a entrenched enemy
The purpose of doing this is because the armor reduces casualties, you can see most of the kills are mobility kills the structure of the tank looks intact so the crew has a chance of escaping to safety

Hundreds of tanks rushed around Avdiivka. They were hit by massive artillery fire. What amazing events, and for some reason no one filmed them. Despite the fact that the fortress is lined with surveillance cameras. In each video we see two, three cars on the move. But there is a lot of damaged equipment there. How did it happen? To begin with, let's establish what we know. The battles around Avdiivka have been going on since 2014. During this time, there were countless attempts to capture Avdiivka by the forces of the DPR. And break through from it to Donetsk by the forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. As you understand, all these attempts were carried out on armored vehicles. How fortunate. Unfortunately for those who considered the damaged cars, those that can be restored were evacuated from near Avdiivka. Otherwise, it would be possible to count three hundred damaged cars. Was the Russian army going to immediately surround Avdiivka? Don't you think that wouldn't be smart? Imagine on the map what this environment would look like? A thin bridge between the territory controlled by Ukraine and the fortress. In which there are enough supplies so that it does not fall immediately. Such an environment would have been broken even without the retreat of the APU. Why would they retreat if this encirclement doesn't last long? What was the goal of the Russians? Approximately the one they have reached is to deepen the boiler, if possible, to reach the supply lines of Avdiivka. And most importantly, get to the point from which this fortress will be viewed. Why is this so important? Since the beginning of the operation, shelling of Donetsk by artillery systems has stopped near Avdiivka. There have been several Hymers attacks, but rockets are not shells. Some of the missiles are shot down, and the very attempt to fire missile systems is many times more expensive than artillery. If long-range artillery systems have survived in Avdiivka, an attempt to fire from them, in the current situation, is suicide. Further. As it was said. If on the territory of this fortress, the APU will constantly suffer heavy losses. There is no point in surrounding this place, or capturing it. If Avdiivka has become an ideological symbol of the current Ukraine. They will pay for this symbol with their army.

Funnily it came to light when they called for workers to build tanks and it was there in the background. If machine tools need to be western , it's unlikely more technological intense components such as processors can be made very quickly. The author thinks wrong. Firstly, it is difficult to confirm the ownership of all armored vehicles, Ukrainian resources always lie very much and exaggerate very much in almost everything, I notice this almost every day for almost 2 years. I am sure that at least a third of these armored vehicles belonged to the Ukrainian side, because they somehow had to defend themselves during these 1.5 years in this area and restrain a rapid offensive. The author also says that the operation in the north failed, it cannot fail, because such operations are always complex and the north is only one small part of the entire operation, in parallel with the actions on the ground, there are a lot of drones, tactical aircraft and missile systems that reveal the positions of the Ukrainians in the rear. Artillery is being destroyed, logistics is being destroyed.
The Russians have taken strategic heights or the heights are in the gray zone, which already means success for them. Almost always and in all areas, the Russians push the enemy back by 5 km, and then strengthen their positions by 2.5 km, turning the remaining 2.5 km into a gray zone. This tactic can be traced in all directions and it makes sense. The losses are large, but the operation is going according to plan. This area has been fortified for 8 years and this is not the boundless expanse of Zaporozhye, there are very precise and verified fire maps up to a meter. Even with this, Ukrainians are losing their advantage so quickly...

    • @xblade11230
      @xblade11230 8 месяцев назад

A lot of these armored vehicles are old, that is correct
Most of the recent ones are mobility kills meant to draw out defenders, there are numerous videos of artillery kills by the Russians who are popping them after they are drawn out by tanks
The successful advance means that the Russians drew them out of hiding with tanks, and they were downed by suicide drones /counter battery/ lancets.

I know those news are very recent, but there's a couple of "game changers" you didn't mention for this battle field: the new version of the "Flamethrower" TOS-1A upgraded from a 6km range (nearly point blank) to 10km (not so close), and the arrival of the R-37M credited to have downed 1 helicopter and 14 jets just over the last 3 days. From what "The Military Summary" reported, there is zero air support over Avdiivka any longer, and all attempts to send air support end up the same way, resulting in no Storm Shadow for the last 2 weeks.
Like in Bakhmut/Artiomiovsk, the Russian tactics seems to be "hey, look, we're attacking here!" to attract the Ukrainians to their meatgrinder and pretend to give them a chance to surrender: demilitarization at its highest level...
Also, it looks there was an actual "wave" of ATACMS against Lougansk and the airfield in Berdiansk, home of a squadron of KA-52. Since then, some info has leaked: out of the 21 ATACMS reportedly delivered, 18 were launched, supposedly to support an attack of the Ukraimian in Kherson, letting them cross the Dniepr after putting the Russian army in disarray. Out of these 18 missiles launched, 3 made their way close to destination (they don't have GPS). Because those ATACMS missiles have fragmentation heads (according to the US), they did minimal damage to the site (up to 4 KA-52 damaged, none destroyed) and the attack had to be cancelled. On that Kherson front, TASS reports sunk boats several times every day and all the videos show the Ukrinian foothold on the "Russian side" is shelled permanently by pretty much everything the Russians have, starting with FAB500 and TOS-1A.

Yes, the author thinks too narrowly, such operations are very large and complex and are designed in waves and for months ahead. This lightning attack in the north of Avdiivka was not aimed at the goal = result, it is only a small cog in the huge plan in which the Ukrainian side showed the location of its artillery, after which the lancets made "Brrrrrrr". Not to mention everything else....
It also forced them to pull together troops, introduce reserves, logistics, not to mention the planes and helicopters shot down over the past week.
It's a very huge game and the ball is on the Russian side now...
