  • Good and quite detailed study of life in a lighthouse off the Isle of Man.
    Waves beating a rocky shore. Spume. Long shot of lighthouse on a small patch of rock. very isolated. Sicken or Sitten rock of the Isle of Man which guards the approaches to Liverpool. Small boats lined up on the shore. Marina. Two men walking down a steep patch. Two men boarding a small sailboat. (they are the lighthouse keepers who work 6 weeks on and 2 weeks off). An ocean liner pulling into the harbour. Crane unloads cargo from liner on to dockside. High shot of cargo hold. Illustrated map of UK and small amount of France. London is named and shipping paths are marked by white lines around the country. Other place names appear - all ports (mostly illegible). White blobs move along the white lines to symbolise tidal currents. White highlights appear on areas of the coast where there are lots of rocks. (South coast, parts of Scotland, the North East, the coast of Wales and the East coast of Ireland.) Cut to choppy sea. Two oil tankers in stormy sea. Cut back to map. North Sea named and there is a scale marking to indicate mileage. Lighthouse symbols appear around the coast. Long shot of Lighthouse as seen from moving sailboat. Same shot but at night - not much visible except beam of light. Map - pan into close up of Isle of Man. Cut to lighthouse in daylight. Two men in boat point at stormy water and fog. Fog signals heard over dark screen. Man preparing fog gun. He inserts signal charge. Charge held aloft on large metal hook from lighthouse window. Charge detonated with a loud bang and black smoke. Illustrated cross section of lighthouse showing where each of the rooms are. Close up of lamp house. Close up of machine room. Moves down to first bedroom. Next is second (twin) bedroom. Below is food-store. Next is kitchen. Workshop beneath, then oil store then water store. Cut to lighthouse man in a bunk waking up early. Second man opens window, First man washes face. Third man sifts flour and rolls out pastry or bread or cake onto a chopping board. Finished cake taken out of oven to cool. First man drinks coffee or tea. Torchlight picks around the dark water store. Close up of a kettle pouring hot water into a washing up bowl. Washing up. Man pours bucket of slops into sea. All three men clean the lenses of the lamp. One man climbs around outside lamp house. He carries a bucket and cloth to clean the outside glass. He is buffeted by the wind. Shot from ledge down 100 feet to see the fierce sea below. First man draws blinds in lamp house. First man on radio to the mainland. Cut to mainland. Large aerial. Uniformed man in shore station talks on radio. Man fishes off rock at lighthouse. His two companions stroll around during low tide. He catches a large fish. One man constructs a model ocean liner. Scale model of lighthouse showing how supplies are brought in by men swinging across from sailboats on ropes. Cut to actual footage of delivery. Man from boat brings mail. Rope and pulley system drags bag of food over from boat. Barrel of paraffin hoisted up to top of lighthouse. Bag of flour follows it and is pulled through a small window. Man returns to boat after six weeks' duty. Remaining worker waves out off the window. Keeper writes in weather log. Puts on hat and goes to light the lamp. Second man sits at desk, smoking a pipe. There is a paraffin lamp behind him. Close up on his hands pointing at a column in the log book. Man puts paraffin in the lamp and pumps it around manually. Close up on gauges. Man goes to the lamp house. He pours a small amount of paraffin on the wick from a little metal can. Lamp is lit from a match. Wick is wound up by the other keeper in the machine room below. Close up on cogs and wheels turning. Lamp turns. Lighthouse at night seen from distance.
