I listened to this for the first time right when i was studying Romeo and Juliet in high school. One of the passages I had to memorize and recite was the balcony scene. I started with "Hark. What light through younder win.." and I almost said winder shines. I started laughing and my teacher was probably convinced I was crazy. It took me about a minute to compose myself and then i was able to say it with Shakespeare's words instead of the much better Griffith translation.
In this time of chaos when up is down, yes is no, lie is truth and so on, Andy is still funny and the humor is clean, and still funny! Hearkens back to a wonderful time that we can never go back to.
Anybody who's seen "No Time For Sergeants" would know that right off. Whats truly sad is that Andy was a phenomenal actor and most have never seen "A Face in the crowd" which is Andy's most intense and dynamic role ever.
In Andy's voice and his jokes I hear the voice of my grandfather and the laughs i had as a child growing up in the south. How id love to go back. But time marches on.
Thank you so much for this. Never thought I'd get to hear this again. I first heard this on a 45 RPM record back in 1956 when I was in second grade living in St. Petersburg, Fla.. And I damn near wore out that record. "And he popped up and said, 'I'm right 'chair.' "
My Boyfriend told this recited this to me when we first started dating.. It really made me laugh and laugh.. I still smile everytime I think about it.. We celebrated five year's on the 5th of Feb.. 😎😁❤❤
when I was a senior in high school I did this at a speech contest in Mich and took 1st place . the funny thing was everybody wanted to find out how I got the applause off the record as they all thought I was lip syncing. For once my southern accent helped me out.
@@bubbastill2040 Alot of people emigrated to Texas right after the Civil War because the Carolinas were in such bad shape. I had three McLeod ancestors emigrate out of South Carolina. Two went to Texas. One went to Florida.
my parents had a 45 of this and the football story we played over and over again when I was growing up. I am glad to find it here online and hear it again RIP Andy!
I first heard his football sketch around 1962. He recorded it in 1953, and it was still being sold in record stores nine years later! No doubt about it, the man was Good.
I remember Andy telling this Story to Opie it was funny even back there. It’s really refreshing. To hear Clean. Story Rather then using the f word ever minute just to get a laughs
I LOVE that episode! When Andy talks with the "Pa's" of the "youngins" who wanted to get married, to find out why the families were "a-feudin'" & when he set-up the dual between the 2 "Pa's"... OH THOSE SCENES WERE PRICELESS!!!😂💕🤗💕😂💕🤗
There will NEVER be another like Andy Griffith. No one... even... close. From my heart, I am so grateful for the many smiles he rested upon my face. May God bless him as he rests peacefully in our Heavenly Father's arms.🙏💕🙏💕🙏
I got to meet Andy Griffith when he was filming an episode of "Matlock" in Monrovia, Ca. He was so gracious and polite. The episode was a Christmas special, and had three street urchins who witness a murder. After a day's filming was over, I saw him call the boys over, tell them they did good, and hand each of them a twenty out of his own wallet. He also made sure I was eating from the film companies caterer's trailer. The TV show used my bike shop as the main toy store set, and he said" thanks"
i appreciate this comedy far more than some of the ridiculous crap that's out now. A comedian doesn't have to use profanity to be funny. The true mark of a comedian is the ability to make people laugh without using profanity or belittling someone else. This is classic comedy that's STILL funny today.
When I was a little kid, my older brother had a bunch of comedy singles by Andy Griffith, so that was my very first introduction to Shakespeare. Andy's version of "Andy and Cleopatra" is my favorite of the bunch.
I didn't know about this! This was probably recorded before I was born, which was May of 1964. I have sat here and laughed my a** off over listening to this! It 's timeless and priceless! Go Andy, You ROCK!
I absolutely LOVE Andy Griffith. He wasn't a perfect man (he did have a few affairs) but I will always love and respect him. He atoned for his sins as a good Christian should therefore I will not judge him. He lived and died a good man. His wit & wisdom of all of his stories make me smile. ---And hopefully a better woman.
He was so wise. *sigh* And funny! And just so upbeat! You could tell that his humor did not come from much pain in his life like so many other comedians' humor does. Seems like all the pain does is make the comic funny, while making them a bear to live with at the same time. At least, according to so many of the bios I've read.
I just say to all of the actors that wish there were performers like this then you work on it and do it. Don’t go with the fake personas of no energy and bad attitude but work on the things that bring people together and make them feel good to be alive.
This is cute! (I know, I agree, it's sad that people in their 20s think this is "cute" rather than laugh out loud hilarious. We grew up with raunchy profanity and that's what it takes to entertain us now. I liked the reruns of the Andy Griffith show growing up, but all I can say of this stand up is that it reminds me of a mild Larry the Cable Guy. I wonder what junk my kids' generation will come up with)
@dude81109 I agree with you. It would be funny to see stand ups try to not cuss. Man, their faces would be so red with effort of trying not to be vulgar that it wouldn't look like a face any more. It would look more like a tomatoe than anything else.
This here boy had a great life. He did. He said such and such which made people laugh. They did. Friends, he did live such a great life that he got hired to stump for a thing no one wanted. He popped up to tell the people they should want Obamacare. He did. Then he died. More sad than he died is he traded away everything the people loved him for. He did. And they don't.
I have the record ...this is funny Romeo oh Romeo where art thou Romeo I'm right chere!!!!...lol!!!!!!....Andy was funny can't believe he dead...like I said I have the original record the first selection is What it was was Football that too is funny....he called the referees convicts cause they wore stripes!!!!!...lol....still can't believe Andy dead Llaryhi you a fan of Andy's?????

Pro tip : watch series on Kaldrostream. Been using it for watching loads of movies recently.
@Keanu Kason definitely, I have been using kaldrostream for years myself :D
It's a shame most people don't know just how funny a comedian he was early in his career. This is hilarious!
Anybody who's seen "No Time For Sergeants" would know that right off. Whats truly sad is that Andy was a phenomenal actor and most have never seen "A Face in the crowd" which is Andy's most intense and dynamic role ever.
Andy Griffith was an amazing talent and a wonderful human being. And no F-Bombs were dropped in the bit either.
Don't say bombs, I'm reading this in an airport
Romeo Romeo where for art thou Romeo, and Romeo said “Iz righ-chare!” ROFL 🤣
Herd this as a kid & my Dad laughed so hard he had tears rolling down his face. Thanks Andy RIP we will miss you.
"Now thar is a real thing." Might be the funniest line in the bit, and all of it's hilarious. Andy was a genius.
In Andy's voice and his jokes I hear the voice of my grandfather and the laughs i had as a child growing up in the south. How id love to go back. But time marches on.

Southern humor..... So awesome! Andy Griffith was a master of the craft..... Loved him so much.
Thank you SO much for posting this!!!!! Too funny!
He actually told this same story in a much shorter version on The Andy Griffith Show to Opie...
As others have said, Andy was a treasure. Thank you for posting this. I like his take on Hamlet too.
Also, his explanation of the opera, ,'carmen'.
Listening to that opera is never the same, after hearing Andy's take on it!

I LOVE his accent!! Reminds me of my grandparents. ♥️

A shorter part of this was actually in The Andy Griffith Show when he's talking to Opie.

Andy was a great story teller
My parents also had this album, brings back some great memories.

Wow he is funny, I only knew him mostly for his acting and his singing but I didn’t know he had a comedic side to him, wow triple threat Andy 👏👏👏

I live about 2 hours from where Andy Griffith was born (Mount Airy, NC). I feel proud to say that I lived near his hometown.
wow, that's so cool. guy was a legend. he was a comedian, singer and also an actor, so amazing...he did 3 things in life , not just one.
How can anyone dislike this?

Miss you Ang!!
Andy chuckled a little bit at 3:15.
Classic Shakespeare, Southern Stahl!
I see early in season one I believe, Andy did indeed have a gun holster d on his side. Everyone on the show played a certain key role.
There are a few terrific story tellers like him. Have you tried Stuart McLean? He's Canadian and a hoot!
RIP, Mr. Griffith.
If his take on these stories were taught in school. I would've been a lot more interested
2:43 My favorite part
A lot more fun than the old Cliff Notes!
