  • The ball is thrown up from the moving truck, and the thrower CATCHES the same ball! HOW???
    I am a physics educator, and I enjoy making videos for my students to better understand physics phenomena. I'm hoping that this does well in the #VeritasiumContest!
    A few years ago, a couple of colleagues and I filmed this video ( • Newton's Law of Inerti... ) that shows what happens if you throw a ball up in a moving vehicle. It has received a lot of views, and so I wanted to provide a quick explanation as to what is happening. A longer explanation would definitely allow for more concepts to be discussed, but I did my best!!! Enjoy!
    This is a great example of Newton's Law of Inertia and frames of reference!
    This is a very quick video to fit within the 1-minute requirement of the Veritasium Contest. I hope it helps!

    When an emergency break is applied all the passengers are pushed forward,in some circumstances some people can be thrown out, unless the safety belt is tightened by individual passengers

      anyway this video's quality is in the highest tier i've seen in the contest so far. good luck.

    Likely, I wanna explain that the ball in the case was caught after being thrown because of the constant speed and there's both the vertical and horizontal speed will work, hence there's a parabolic motion of the ball if we observe carefully
    Am I right???, I don't know about it but it was in my opinion... 😅

    So if you throw big ball higher will there be much higher air resistance?
    As if you throw the tennis ball same height as you thrown the big ball, i am sure you could have catch that.

    So if the truck was accelerating, would he catch it? Thanks for your video

    • @adityasaini_x
      @adityasaini_x Год назад +4

      nah as acceleration is force times mass and when the ball is thrown it geta velocity but force does not get transferred as there is no point of contact between accelerationg body (truck) and the ball so acceleration of ball will be zero

      It would be the opposite. After throwing the tennis ball, if the truck decelerates then he could catch it.

    so, can we say that the big ball shares the same horizontal velocity as the truck's? And if that is true, does that mean there's no acceleration on the horizontal direction? Thank you for your video and reply in advance.

    • @jonnie106
      @jonnie106 2 года назад +1

      Yes. You can say the ball retained the momentum of the truck's constant speed. If the truck is moving at a constant 25mph, then so is the driver, as well as the rider in back, including the ball he's about to toss straight up. The instant the ball leaves the throwers hands, it still has the 25mph momentum, which is why it straight back down, relative to the thrower. This will happen as long as no force changes the speed of either the truck or the ball.
      The next iteration of this experiment needs to show the result of tossing the ball up and then immediately decelerating the truck. While in contact with the truck, the ball shares the truck's momentum of 25mph. The moment the ball no longer has contact with the truck, what do you think will happen if a force, like the brake pads, decelerates the truck to 5mph and then 0?

      @@edgarfranco367 Exactly! Braking the truck momentum to zero while the ball still retains the 25 mph momentum, has the ball flying forward ahead of the truck. This is why seat belts save lives. It isn't the speed that kills in a car wreck, it's the rapid change in acceleration. It confuses lots of people but we humans do not feel motion or velocity when it is constant. We only feel acceleration/deceleration; 'changes in velocity.

      If there is air resistance, as in these videos, then yes. Since the thrown object will be slightly affected by the air resistance, the higher the object is thrown, the greater the effect of the air resistance.

    • @fromnorway643
      @fromnorway643 9 месяцев назад

      Yes, because an object thrown higher will stay in the air _longer_ and thus be more slowed down by the air resistance.
