1986 Hesston Corp. "Pak-Rat" Mini Side Load Garbage Truck

- Recently, I had the opportunity to tag along for a day with this rare classic: the Hesston Corp. "Pak-Rat" mini side loader! This rare and relatively unknown body is seen here mounted to a 1986 Dodge RAM, and runs a quiet countryside route in rural Lane County, OR. As you can see, this unit has been outfitted with a custom-built cart tipper, which is capable of handling a wide variety of trash carts from 32- to 96-gallons. The full-height curved packer blade is forced into the body by a pair of single-stage hydraulic cylinders, generating enough force to pack nearly two tons of garbage into this little body! When the truck is full, the blade extends all the way to the rear of the body to eject the load. All-in-all, this looks to be a very stoutly built body. Aside from some rust and minor wear and tear, she's still kicking hard and running strong, especially for being nearly 30 years old!

Great old packer!! The fact that its also on Dodge frame makes it even rarer. It looks like its been taken very good care of for sure. Trucks now a days with all the their fancy mechanisms are good only for a few years. These old beasts were built for a lifetime of abuse. Real epic catch brother.

Thanks for showing. Reminds me of that small rubbish truck in Winchendon, MA that collected trash at the former Food Ranch store (now long gone due to fire). Seems they were collecting corrugated as well, tough time putting it all in, too!
BIG thumbs up for this video. This truck has stood the test of time for sure, what excellent capture. I cant get enough of these small old side loaders in action and what a feisty tote dumper. Great crew for helping you capture this before they are all gone and nobody would remember the way things were once done. I hope you can get more in the future.

I used to drive a truck similar to this. It was a New Way side loader. It always packed better facing up hill. It had hooks in ceiling to hold trash back.
Not much power on that packer but it is nice to see an old truck like this one still at it. Great job Thrash!
Possibly, it is getting too full of trash to be able to pack anymore.

These old Rams were supposedly the least durable chassis of this class, not many have stuck around so seeing one doing grueling trash duty is especially impressive. Great job on all the different camera angles, especially the close ups of the packer arrangement. A clever way to use those smaller cylinders. Very much looking forward to seeing the rest of the Sunrise Sanitation fleet.

right man they where garbage from the factory with that nice garbage paint that would peel a year later. Maybe because this one is not crap blue. You know that blue, not really interesting to look at, not really navy not really sky blue, like blue with gray, crap blue. And rusted out rocker panels. I feel bad for those guys, looks like a craptastic truck. I like the idea. But its sooooo poorly executed, first off this is a tiny body so why they would make it horizontal is beyond me. It should be tipped down so the stuff actually fills it full not just 50%

a modern econic will break down even more and need service to reset sensors SCR NOX DPF Systems ADblue during malfunction you are limited in 20 km/h and in 1 km it will shut down this old truck is more reliable

Interesting little garbage truck, but not having anything to hold back compressed trash seems to render it pretty useless. Also, I can't believe these guys do not wear gloves, and worse yet, reach into the hopper to adjust trash.....with bare hands!

It’s just old and not well maintained. They stopped making them for a long time, but the newer versions they have are essentially the same design. Just a lot more power and computers.

The video seems excellent, but by God we are in the twenty-first century, the company should think about the modernity of the service system, we can see the effort on human made by the staff to empty the garbage containers the same way the security equipment, ,
