1973 Kenworth Hustler - GarWood LP-900 Garbage Truck

- During my recent visit to Sunrise Sanitation Service, I also had the opportunity to ride a long in this true beast of a classic garbage truck! Here we have the legendary GarWood LP-900 rear load body on a gorgeous Kenworth Hustler cab and chassis! This old beauty is powered by a Detroit Diesel 6V-53 two-stroke engine with an early Allison automatic transmission. The audio here does this truck little justice, in person she absolutely screams!
For those unfamiliar with the history of the GarWood LP-900 body, the model was built from 1972 until 1979 by GarWood, after which the design was sold to Heil and became the Formula 5000 rear loader that many of us grew up with. It is still built today with an updated curved shell body, marketed as the Heil DuraPack 5000. The original tailgate/hopper/packer assembly remains virtually unchanged to this day.
Watch here as this classic machine navigates its way through a scenic country garbage route in rural Oregon, handling a variety of manual and semi-automated collection. I tried to capture this beauty from as many angles as possible, and I experimented with several shots that I've never attempted before! I put a lot of hard work into trying to give this old girl the justice she deserves, and I hope you all enjoy the end result!
I would like to extend a huge thank you to the kind gentlemen at Sunrise Sanitation Service for allowing me to tag along on route to document this rare gem! It is a huge honor and privilege to be able to share this truck with all of you!

Wow, it's amazing how aggressively loud that thing is. The things drivers had to "put up with" back in the day.
After about an hour my ears start to ring when i go on the freeway hahaha
And they didn't complain
steel q1q
The sound of the truck slowly accelerating sounds just like one of the old school buses in the school district that i rode.
I loved following the garbage trucks down my street when I was. Kid in the early 70’s.
This is exactly how they sounded!!
I want a job working with the rear load garbage truck and some day really start my own trash service called Robert's trash service,i believe in my dreams.
That thing fully restored would be one hell of a sight.
just imagine waking up to that every garbage day.
Holy crap! Wow! Wow! Wow! The most amazing garbage truck around! Absolutely love that sharp roar of that good ol Detroit 6V53, especially the takeoff at 2:41! Sounds like this truck has an Allison MT640 transmission in it! Unbelievable roar! I'm definitely coming back to this one!
i like this trucks not the modern ones we have in Germany that are rolling computers
me too yep
yep new trucks are computer shit too muffled ULE Shit
We have lots of Haller X2evo and one old KSG Europress on an MAN F2000 Frame. The Body got reseatet after the original Frame had an Accident. But now the Truck rotts away under a Tree because we don't use it anymore only once or twice per year
@@computertut2045 yeah they are rarely seen
The sound makes me smile!
Cool machine and its great its still working today. Very slow compared to today's machines.
+lidsman2221 because its worn out
yeah but more reliable than modern machines
but more reliable than rolling computers
I like how the driver slowed down when making the turn onto the private road or driveway, while making sure that he had enough height clearance. Good job.
Wow what an amazing beast! should almost be in a museum! When I was a kid here in Montreal in the 80s, I remember exactly these Kenworths that came to get the trash but they were all red. And definetly had Detroits in 'em.
I plan on opening my own museum and this is my first project!
retroolschool o k
no don't put it in a museum let it work not the modern shit working out instead
That’s so Awesome how it sounds on the highway
Beautiful. :) Brought happy tears to my eyes on how much TLC Jared has given the ole KW. :) Luv ya man.
classic truck! love the look of the front, awesome episode riding in and on the truck great camera shots! your videos are taking garbage truck channels to a new level!
Detroit plus Allison transmission still kicking
I thought Heil bought Garwood in 1975 I remember trucks like that as a kid in the mid 1970s and they were Heils. For sure back to 1976. Reason why I remember this is because someone in our neighborhood threw out a stove and I didn't think such a truck could pick up something like that. Hah, it crunched it down like tinfoil. As a kid who followed the garbage truck you don't forget such things, LOL
It's really cool to see a 1973 garbage truck still in operation in 2015 (!) Though the packer operation on this one seems a bit iffy.
yep !!! a mid to late 10s German truck won't last as long as this
Big thanks to the people who take care of the trash. It does not look like an easy job even in good weather. One thing of note, no gloves!?!?
Built in 1973 and still going over 40 years later, can't believe it..... I'm still mega jealous you guys continue to have so many classics up there! I like your choice of opening clip with just the engine sound kicking things off, followed by the source of sound rushing into view and across the screen. That pack cycle is a lot slower than what we know today, doubt they cycle it as often as they did for video reasons I'm sure ;) I noticed the hesitations as the packer dropped into the hopper - haven't seen it happen on many trucks, always wondered what causes it. I saw this one has the single lever for 4-stage pack cycle too like the old Leach, was this the standard control on the 900? Truck sounds like a bit of a race car from inside the cab, then it's got that cool rough growl on the outside..... this thing must make one deaf after a well :P I also saw him chuck some cardboard in a compartment under the truck, not something you'd expect.
because no electronics that's why
@@Steve1766 yep
because no Electronics or Planned obsolescence so it can last forever
wish i also see Trucks like that but in my country there is nothing older than Euro 5 😢
That revving is so cool
nice old truck
Good video's
I actually remember when this guy posted it so cool
Didn't know Garwood had such a design as shown. Only recall the type with "a 360 degree rotating conveyor and ram panel" design. Very possible this same packing body, by the looks of this one, sits on a truck parked on Marlborough Road in Troy, NH.
at least I'm not the only one with a loud ass garbage truck. 2002 Volvo rocking straight pipe. beat to hell and back.
amazing truck 🤩
Even more Rare is this one with the 6V53 N or TA Detroit Diesel engine with a MT Series Allison Transmission awesome looking Kenworth
that beast just can't get too full
Thanks for making that video l have never seen a garbage truck like that
Good ol Detroit 💪
gotta love that sweet Dertroit converting fuel into noise🤣👌💪
hell yeah !!! 2 stroke detroit
I love those train horns
I can tell it has a Detroit Diesel by the sound.
I love this truck that is all I can say
There were a few transit buses that used the 6V53 and Allison:
Orion I (1977-1982)
TMC CityCruiser T30 (1979-1982, same product as Orion I)
Blue Bird City Bird (1976-1983)
Carpenter CBW300 (1980-1983)
This one has an Allison MT640 or MT643.
It looks just like the Heil 5000 rear load body. Also sounds like a 2 stroke diesel motor.
Train horns on a garbage truck? Hell yeah
I am absolutely finished. I would work for free for a day or two to ride this.
And I like it when the truck bounces a little when that packer gets used am I right?
2:50 Mack MRU Amrep HX-450 Front Loader (Lane Apex)
I recognize that section of highway 99 you guys were on! That's right between Eugene and Creswell. I went to trucking school there about a month ago. Really wish I could've seen that awesome old truck, but I'm not sure if it's still in service anymore.
and I thought my rig was loud, I remember at our yard we use to have a couple of these mounted on White GM chassis
And that is her sound with two mufflers in series. :)
Am i right when i assume than the only engine available in those Kenworth Hustler was the Detroit??I never heard of any of those with a Cat or a Cummins.....Quite amazing ang terrific to see such a nice relic still in use!!
Wow! I didn't realize this was in Oregon. I'll have to come see it some time.
the GOOPER your welcome anytime!
Man I'd love to run this ol' girl, I've seen that main guy on a vid or two lucky fella haha!
Gorgeous!

Aye
Beautiful old truck. Love the old 2 stroke Detroit. Unfortunately I have to say, would be a much better truck had it had a real transmission instead a damn automatic. But then, most new drivers and most garbage truck drivers wouldn't know how to drive a manual transmission.
Two Stroke Detroit!!
Bryn Please do his old amrep mini! it would be so cool! and also his really old truck that is purple i forgot the brand! It would be sick!!!
Im workin on getting purple set up
Incredible how loud this hunk of junk is and still allowed on the road.
that ain't junk it's better modern than the Euro 6 shit Benz Antos and Econic we have here in Europe
@@Steve1766 yep
this ain't a hunk of junk hunk of junk are Mercedes Antos Actros Arocs Econic and MAN TGS euro 6 we have in Germany
That is so cool
sounds like a 6v53 under that cab
That truck looks like one that belonged to a company in Washington county Oregon and Valley Garbage was the name of it goes all the way back to when the father on the company and Kenworth did an advertisement in a waste magazine the father retired and the two sons took it over which later was sold to Pride Disposal but I could be wrong
Garwood And Heil Formula 5000 Bodies Look Identical.
they are literally the same it says so in the description.
Im surprised to not see smoke
She never did put out smoke. :)
Well maintained..... probably why it's still around lol
no proken fuel pump or piston rings valves etc to emit smoke
Wow this truck is ancient! I'm surprised that it's even still running.
Built to last.
@@user-gf3mu5uc8j yep no Planned obsolescence like in the modern ones
of course it would still run there are no electronics or Planned obsolescence or any sensors processors computers PCBs ECUs CPU CPM EGR DPF Or Adblue like a modern truck there isn't even a catalytic convertor not it's not even Euro 1 not even even 4 stroke this truck is able to last forever

Nice, lol I wonder why these little companies have such younger employees. Also this chassis reminds me of the Peterbilt 300.. doesn't it to you?
We are the owners of the company gotta start young to provide the most years of service!
South Bay Refuse
yes they do look similar.
That’s got to be a Detroit engine
08:14 Oscar's TrashCan do some metal trash can pickups.
Love the versa’s how many of ‘em
The Allison automatic used here is the MT640.
Never knew that!
1973 was the first year that automatic was available. Prior to that, the Allisons were six speeds, with the bottom two gears being super low. Today's Allisons are also six speeds, but with the top two gears being overdriven.
does he still have his old mini L.A. Amrep ASL ?
what do they do for recycling there?
nothing

is that a Detroit diesel in that truck? Sounds good.
BADAZZCUSTOMZ 455 read description
Do you know what engine is in that truck. Sounds like a big cam Cummins or a Detroit Diesel
It is definitely a 2 cycle Detroit. It sounds nothing like a Cummins.
6V-53
it's 2 stroke it has no cams because it has no valves
there are only holes one that fuel enters throught and the other that the smoke comes out
i would be scared if i got this truck no cap
YA MAN GO DETROIT!!!
me
is that a 2t diesel or why does it rev that much?
J. Salmi it’s a 6v53 Detroit Diesel it’s a 2 stroke
I have a question that doesn't relate... Cool vid and I enjoyed it as a garbage man.. Pretty neat stuff back in the day.. lol But why was the driver wearing a dog collar!!??
C H ever heard of furry's?
no
That truck might be older than the guys operating it.

but that's the old dinosaur right there but still work that doesn't it don't make trucks like that no more I haven't seen a truck like that and 1978 I was 8 years old God and Jesus

yep not a computer on wheels
yep and not a computer on wheels
Why is it loud when it moves?
Because it’s a 2 stroke....they fire twice as much as your standard 4 stroke diesel, so it gives off the sound as if it’s turning 4K rpm when it’s really only revving to 2k....that’s where the nickname screaming jimmies come from.
because it's an old engine
holy shit its a two stroke heal ya
put a 10 speed in that double clutch shifting lol
This for Pepsi 8:05 😂
