WILL IT START? SCREAMING Jimmy 6x6 2 Stroke Detroit Diesel Garbage Truck

  • In this video, I see if I can get this old 2 stroke Detroit diesel powered kenworth / RFW 6x6 offroad garbage truck running after it was retired and had been sitting in this yard for atleast 4 years. Nature was starting to take over so I decided this truck is going to be rescued and will be getting a second change at life. It’s not the best will it start video and I almost wasn’t going to post it due to technical difficulties encountered during the start up process, but I have chosen to put it up where it is a truck that should make a few later appearances on my channel. My apologies in advance for this will it start video missing some of the usual sections. I hope you enjoy watching regardless and that this shows some history for the later videos on this beast of a screaming jimmy 2 stroke diesel truck, Bruce.

    The "RFW" brand didn't run for that long on the roads, "Leader" out lasted them, only just. Single head lighted cab over Kenworths were usually the smaller versions designed for "local" work. Classic sheepskin seat cover survived quite well too, a quick shampoo and back in it goes Bruce! Presume that yellow Leader had a Caterpillar engine in it? Grandfather had a Kenworth K-123 cab over in mid 1970's with a Jimmy in it, used to do the interstate work, it had the sleeper cab. Great video, hope you go back and get the Leader to kick over...😉

    • @bruceinaus
      @bruceinaus  10 месяцев назад

      Morning Dave, thanks for watching and good to see you on here! Yes this one did “local” but offroad garbage work most of its life, this has the slim cab. Yes the leader has the caterpillar 3208 V8, 13sp RR ect. I went to open the door and it has been sitting so long the had stuck. I’ll see how I go once the tray is removed and there’s a bit more room to get to it! Bruce

    Bruce, awesome find, guess it’s from another mate you know? Bruce I would really appreciate it if you could take some time out either before or after you fit the tray to go through the 6 wheel drive part of the truck, explaining how the diff/drive shaft seals are fitted and how you actually get drive on both sides of the diff as I’ve never seen how it’s done. Yeah, she sounds really beautiful to me, I used to love listening to the old Greyhound interstate buses taking off from lights and going through the gears. Thanks for finding such interesting content mate.

    • @bruceinaus
      @bruceinaus  10 месяцев назад +4

      Gday Gordon, great to see you here and thanks for the comment. Yes I will do some footage of that setup where the back drive shaft leaves the front diff when I do the running video. Yes this engine is probably the older little brother to some of the early denning coaches ect, I think some of the later ones of those had 6v92 Detroit’s and I have even seen some with 8v92’s aswell. There’s quite a bit of interesting stuff in my area just sitting around and I’ve lived in the same area for basically my whole life so you get to hear what’s about. I may even try do a short on that part of the truck for you but it may need longer than a minute to show it. I’ll do all oils when I get it home so it my be easier to show underneath up in the air. I’ll keep you posted! Bruce

All the hoses are probably at least 30years old and some are disintegrated, hoping to have a video up on that in the next few weeks for any one who might be interested, thanks for your interest in my videos, Best wishes, bruce

    I saw this truck operating on Fraser Island around the early 2000's , quite unusual at the time, only saw it on the move while passing and thought it was a recabbed repowered Army Acco 6x6, must have only seen the rather small top spring pack much like the Acco had.
    R.F.W. used various cabs from other trucks according to customers requirements.

    It's a shame that people leave these vehicles in fields to rust away. I'm sure they probably have the idea that they may use it again one day. After a time you'd think they'd sell it to someone who could put it to use or collector to refurbish it back to its former glory.

      Hi Ben, thanks for watching, I’ve never though about re-purposing an old compactor but you might be into something there. I’ll just be fitted that flat tray off the leader on the end of the video, Bruce

      For off-road rubbish collection, going *fast* through the Bush isn’t in the job description. Probably has a low-gear range that is a slow walking pace at full revs! 😉

    Too bad this thing didn't have a bully bar on the front, because then you could use it to move the stuff in front of it out of the way.

      Hi Don I thought about pulling the firefighter off the back of the Bedford but I’ve decided against that with the El Niño dry conditions predicted for this summer. I will keep the Bedford as a dedicated firetruck now and I think rust has got the best of my 6x6 acco hence the reason I rescued this old machine. Thanks for watching, Bruce

      I've seen trucks loaded with logs with a 6V53 and go okay for that size engine also cement agitators. It depends on who the driver is with Detroits if they're a shit slow driver at changing gears that's what you'll get.
