  • The video you were all waiting for! Danny explains how he plans on designing the front suspension for the AWD 1967 Chevelle Nascar build. We also worked to get the ride height just right to really visualize how the car is going to look.
    Thank you to Mickey Thompson Tires for sponsoring this build. Order a set of ET Street R tires for your build here: www.mickeythompsontires.com/d...

      No idea how these Mickey Thompson tires would react to negative camber up front, but a little of it maybe gets you more clearance. Guess it also depends on the planned use of the Chevelle, dragstrip or fast through corners? And that means both left and right turns!

    A good way to make old school Chevelle awd is to use S-10 4x4 front frame section then add your covers, and your rack & pinion. You could use the S-10 as a template and build your framework from that. We used that to make an 84 Regal awd and also a 66 GTO worked great. Good luck the geometry can really get you.

    With a tank of gas and the battery in the trunk that should offset it. But I think someone has said in an earlier episode it'll have a four link? If you adapt a Tahoe 4 by 4 front frame half it should have the diff. mount. Or possibly help with the fabrication process?Lighter isn't always better but there's always ratchet straps

    Not sure if you've 4 linked the rear end in that thing given I just started watching but given the awd and assuming that you're going to be running a 50/50 drive bias, a decent amount of anti-squat in the rear end would make that set up hook harder than most independent setups. Food for thought, loving the build so far and will definitely be following to see her rip down the strip!

    Hey gang just a thought here. You were trying to figure out a number for the door. How about going to the vin number and see what day of the month that your Muscle Car was built. My Ford Mustang was built on 12/12/69. Number. 273,485. Still road worthy. I dig your rides! I’m a Hot Wheels fan so I put a 69 on the lower rear quarter panel with a large Hot Wheels painted just above it. Can you maybe let me know what the build date was. And if you have already decided on a number. Groovy. Papa Mustang

    Have to ask, why not start with a early 2000's Tahoe chassis and lighten it. Wheelbase is within one inch, and it can be modified much easier to lighten and work. Not to mention cost. I imagine the end result on your build may be worth it, but just figuring geometry vs. factory is one heck of a challenge. Or you could just get a frame section and splice it on.

    • @GnarlySpeedShop
      @GnarlySpeedShop  Год назад

      We definitely thought of sectioning on the front from another vehicle. It's just too bulky looking and for our a race car goals. You are correct it would be the most inexpensive way to go. We like a challenge and we will learn so much from it all. Thanks for watching John

I'd love to be the guy who paints it. Another friend of mine had a car in the world of wheels it was white with stripes and every candy color was used and where one color blended into the other it made a 3rd color blue blended into red made purple it was over 80 different colors a famous painter in Louisiana painted it J.D. • @dclipper8052
    @dclipper8052 Год назад

    The reason your tires are hitting the fender corners is that the A-body suspension has like 3" of positive scrub radius. They're not simply turning--they're actually swinging around in a big arc. I recommend you pay close attention to the scrub radius of the new suspension and try to get it close to zero. This will require new wheels with more positive offset but it will be very worth it. In fact, it might be considered necessary, given that you're now driving those wheels. Huge positive scrub with driven wheels is a recipe for bad things, I think. I believe some front wheel drive cars actually have negative scrub radius.
    I don't know about modern Corvettes but the C4 originally had 1/2" scrub and then they revised it to zero in 1988.
    Also, does that wheel actually fit over the Vette spindle?

    • @GnarlySpeedShop
      @GnarlySpeedShop  Год назад

      We are using rear C6 LG Drag spindles for a 15inch wheel with a little custom machining to get the KPI scrub radius close to Zero as possible. I have been doing months of research on this topic alone. It's super complex, but it sounds like you have some good knowledge of this. Any technical input is welcome here. The steering geometry will be tricky. We are currently Learning about Ackerman angle.

    • @dclipper8052
      @dclipper8052 Год назад

      I don't follow regarding the machining of the spindles but from what I can see, it looks like their inclination is fairly low. I know the C6 fronts are just under 9 degrees and I'm guessing the rears are less than that. This being the case, there's no way that wheel/tire combo is going to work out to zero scrub.
      From how those wheels are positioned on the stock Chevelle suspension, I'd guess they're zero offset? For reference, the later C4 uses front spindles with a huge 14 degree (or something around this) KPI and it still needs wheels with 56mm (2.2") positive offset to achieve its zero scrub.
      I know you have a bunch of dough tied up in parts already and changing course could be a tough pill to swallow but I think your end goal is worth making sure it's done right. The suspension parts could be just fine as-is--you just need some really deep wheels to fit over it. Then the issue becomes clearance between wheel and a-arm while turning, made worse by the high positive offset and the reduced wheel diameter. I think you gotta get that suspension in a jig and start mocking it up with extreme prejudice.
      Regarding Ackerman, I'll say that it's a somewhat debatable topic. Some people will say it's not too terribly important at all. More Ackerman effect makes low speed driving more pleasant but doesn't necessarily provide any benefit at "race speed" when tire slip angles tend to negate its effect on handling. Again using the Vette as reference, they give it very little Ackerman effect. Then they have to ameliorate all the boomers complaining about how the tires chirp as they're pulling out of their garages and whatnot...

    Its a great project, brother and wish to see it all done and running yet I wonder, why torching the springs to lower it... When u dont have ur engine in yet! Compression in those springs are to lift whole front end of car with engine and all accessories. You should have waited till it was all plugged in then check your stance instead of ruining your springs. Also you talk highly os suspension geometry and making your very own design, great... Then work that out to have your wheel choice fit in your car body without cutting it when its all body work free and primed and ready to be painted!

      Eagles have next to zero sidewall strength, and if you rub against a curb or a object hits the sidewall, the tire will instantly blow.
      If you're in a accident with non D.O.T. tires, you better hope you can afford a good law firm.
