    Thanks for the vid. I'm in Sandwich, so your geography is perfect for me to learn from. I'm a first year beekeeper.. knock on wood, but I think I accidentally on purpose overwintered successfly. Cheers!

    Shim works also so far with the 2 inch spacer not many bess have been going under the lid cause i think it is because they can use the slot easier for air flow control and of corse they use it for going in and out but my bees have been using the front as much as the top at night they have about 20 30 bees clustard over the slot to control the air flow and you can watch they ever so neatly rotate the job of garding the slot

      Thank you for watching and the help. I do use the 2 inch shims with vent holes covered with screen to help with the heat later in the season. Not sure if it really helps or not.

    Very nice video. Thank you for making it. First year beekeeper here, Central Ohio, and learning a lot watching how you work your bee's, inspecting frames etc. I can tell you have the same fears as I do with swarming. We just added our 2nd deep brood box last weekend.

      Thank you for watching. Bee's are easier to manage when they are in the hive than if they are in a tree. Good luck whit your hives and I am no expert but If I can help let me know.

    Just curious as to why no Queen excluder on the honey supers?

  • @beebob1279
    @beebob1279 5 лет назад

    Put a small stick on the front of the inner cover for two reasons. One, you won't crush your bees. Two, it allows ventilation for the hive. When you remove supers to extract remember to shut this down to prevent robbing. In winter I'll usually put a stick under the top cover again to keep ventilation.
    With that much un-drawn foundation in the second super you really are't ready for supers. But, hey it's your management process.

      Thank you for watching and the advice. I have 2 inch shims with covered vent holes for when it gets hot and for winter. They are great in the winter because I can just tape them over if I feel they are getting to much air.

    MrT i have inter covers the same it isnt high enough lip to keep from smashing bees between the lid and inter cover and cant flip them over either flip them over then it will smash bees on top the frame so i use a 2 inch spacer on the inter cover and lid

      Thank you for watching and the advice. I think I am going to use an imirie shim to gain the extra space and not allow them to build a ton of burr comb. I like to hear all the little tricks everyone uses.

    How come you don’t remove feeder but you. Putting honey super?
    I always remove feeder as soon as they spring hits and I see them bringing nectar

    What do you paint/stain your hives with, and what are those outer covers?

    • @mrtsbees4454
      @mrtsbees4454  3 года назад

      I use Minwax stain and then Minwax Helmsman urethane. Make sure to let it air out for 3 to 4 weeks before using. I am not sure if you meant the shim for air flow or the outer cover?

    • @GLuft3
      @GLuft3 3 года назад

      @@mrtsbees4454 I meant the outer cover. Looks like plastic vs heavy wood and sheet metal.

    • @mrtsbees4454
      @mrtsbees4454  3 года назад +1

      Sorry yes it's plastic. I got it a few years back from Kelly Beekeeping and I am not a fan of it. It collects moisture way more than a traditional outer cover.

    What's the 75% Rule? Never heard of it and can't find info on it anywhere online.

    • @mrtsbees4454
      @mrtsbees4454  4 года назад

      Thank you for watching. I am not sure where I heard of it but when a hive is building up and they are using 75% of the box that is when to add the next one. Good luck with your girls.

    what is the resoun for suppering?

  • @hilalahmad5739

    I am confused, There r different types of frames in different boxes, in first box which type of frames is to put there, some people shows like a cardboard some open, what to do.

    • @mrtsbees4454
      @mrtsbees4454  6 лет назад

      I use plastic in my frames but some are different colors but they are still plastic. Some people use natural and let the bee's draw it out. I like plastic backing so they have a guide to draw off. I hope this answers your question.

      I use 1/2" starter strips I cut from full sheets or frame with bees wax I melted and brushed on but you gotta put them in between frames with drawn or partly drawn wax so they don't make crazy cone.

    another great video. you and vino are two that i follow from MA.
    do you not believe in queen excluders?

    • @mrtsbees4454
      @mrtsbees4454  6 лет назад

      I don't because the bee's don't seam to want to pass through. But I do want to try the single brood box with an excluder and see what happens. It would also make the inspection easier knowing the queen is only in the bottom box. Where do you live and what's your opinion on them?

    • @bencrain7083

      Check out little bits honey bees. Joe May knows his bees. I like vino he's ok but still learning as with MrT . I'm not saying I know more than anyone or someone is better than anyone but being a 3rd generation bee keeper I know some things and tricks but i still learn something almost every day watching everyone I can on RUclips and watching my own bees. I can't seam to get enough knowledge about bees .

    still not sure when you add the super and when you don't

    • @mrtsbees4454
      @mrtsbees4454  5 лет назад

      Thank you for watching. A lot of people go by the 70% rule depending on what size boxes you use. So i try to look at a box weather it be a super or brood box and if I think that the bee's are working on 7 of the 10 frames than I add another box. The same goes for my nuc's when they are using 70% of the 5 frames then I add another. You just don't want them to run out of room and push back into the brood chamber and slow the queen down. I hope this helps and good luck.

      When you have bees sleeping outside the box at night is that the time to add a new one?
