  • Is Kas, Turkey your next winter home?
After spending 5 months in Kas for the winter of 2019/2020 we explain why we think it's the perfect spot for overwintering in the eastern Mediterranean.

We do get a lot of emails and private messages from people who have come or are coming to Turkey after watching our videos. Maybe we can get a job with Turkish tourism office. 😀

Thank you, so glad I found this video. We were thinking of staying in Teos Marina for the coming winter 21/22, Covid allowing of course, but think Kas may suit us more. We like quiet, authentic places rather than overly commercialized tourist traps. Watching this has reignited our fire for adventure 😃

When things open up - and travel isn't too bad - I'd like to visit Kas on my next visit to Turkey. Yalova and Termal though - is in my heart.

I have thus far really enjoyed my stay here down the coast from you guys and this is a great place to get boat work done with great prices but the last two months and the non stop rain has been a kick in the ass to move on before next winter. The constant rain soaking with the hot cold on all the waterlogged gear is causing a lot of damage. My boat has faired well compared to the other boats I walk by but damn I will need to re varnish/caulk everything again when the rains stop. I will be spending a good month or two doing boat work that I had done just a couple of summers ago. Cheers

This winter in Kas (2020/2021) compared to the previous winter we were here (2018/2019) has been totally different. Much milder and far less rain. Spring is just around the corner. 😀

Marina fees are a big impactor and one that is very much in the foreground of deciding our plans for 2021/2022.

Very enjoyable and interesting series ... many thanks indeed! 2 minor points which you might cover: (1) in an earlier video, we saw you both wearing headsets - do you still use them for mooring, etc (any comments) and (2) any further thoughts or feedback on the problems of chain piling up in the anchor locker? Your modification for stopping the chain flying through the gypsy certainly solves the 'going down' problem but 'coming up' is still a pain!

    • @SailingABSea
      @SailingABSea  3 года назад

The comms headsets where brought on board by Mike and Elaine when they helped us cross from Spain to Turkey. They are voice activated and worked very well and we'd definitely recommend them.
We're still working on the chain going back into the locker and piling up problem. We need to drink more beer to come up with the perfect contraption. 😀👍

Hadn’t thought of that .... a pile of empty beer cans positioned (hidden?) beneath the chain 😊

Is it possible not to show hospitality to your always smiling face? My advice to you is not to leave Turkey without sailing around the Gulf of Gokova, the Gulf of Hisaronu and the Gulf of Gocek. At least 3 seasons you should visit the west coast of the Turkey. Selametle.

Yes great place and may be better than Greece. As now putting things together to move to Uruguay and they do have a marina. Is becoming dangerous here in the former U.S. looking at civil war or total martial law. So sad. Leaving the government is going to take 48% of my investments and may even if I remain.

      Hi Daniel
Are you sailing to Uruguay? My original plan was to head there after the med but all the countries bordering are also locked down. Do you have any insight into possible future openings?
And yes get out while you can. I used to live/work in NY and the writing was on the wall even then which was many years ago. Cheers and best of luck.

No I am flying flying down but they have to open first. Required to obtain a negative covid-19 test before then there on arrival. Then quarantine for 7days and test negative again the quarantine for another 7 days. At this time it limited businesses open. I will rent apartment then eventually bring the sailboat down. It is a long way down. My boat is at Dana Point California and never brought it here to Washington state but may if this pandemic keeps on until 2024 as they have predicted for the U.S. or may be able to get into Mexico for a time. I bought it in December. Did that instead of purchasing a house. The housing prices have gone sky

Thanks for the reply. Have always wanted to go there and explore the surrounding areas. My only concern is i expect many countrires and S.A. will be getting much more dangrous as the economy continues a downward spiral. We are on the cusp of the end to the westrn capitalist system and it is just a question of how much longer they can continue to plug the massive holes. Interesting times indeed.

Without a doubt, Turkey is beautiful and the people are wonderful and helpful and it's also quite inexpensive, but we have just felt in the last 3 or so years that we cannot with good conscience support Turkey over Greece, as the nutty 'self appointed emperor' of Turkey has destroyed democracy in his country and is taking them to the wild side at odds with the world! Similarly we have tried to stop buying things made in China, due to the CCP, whereas again, we've loved every trip to China and love the incredibly warm and friendly Chinese people who are oppressed by their CCP leaders and have no power to change them. All these decisions cost us, as Chinese goods are cheap and Turkey is cheap and we miss our visits, but it's the only way we can try to make a personal difference to the world without just considering ourselves.
Of course all this is purely our personal decision and everybody should most definitely have the right to support whatever regimes they want - as long as they remember that they are supporting the regime and empowering it to stay in power and keep oppressing their lovely people and democracy.

"Of course all this is purely our personal decision and everybody should most definitely have the right to support whatever regimes they want - as long as they remember that they are supporting the regime and empowering it to stay in power and keep oppressing their lovely people and democracy."
That's quite a blanket statement Paul. We don't consider ourselves as 'supporting a regime', we consider that we are supporting the local businesses and the people who struggle to make ends meet under such regimes.
One could of course argue that by paying government taxes on goods and services we buy in Turkey we are indirectly supporting the Turkish government.
By that measurement it can be argued that whichever country you pay income tax in, you are also indirectly supporting oppressive regimes as your government sends foreign aid to countries and regimes that you may not want to support.
      Just food for thought. 👍

@@SailingABSea Of course you make some good points there and each of us can only do what we feel that our own conscience allows, which leaves it open for each one to follow their own path. 👍
