On a drama shoot, I had an actor who had no duologue until after he put his jacket on, his outfit was a becoming a pain to mic up and I took me a long time to realise I can mic up the jacket carefully before he puts it on. It ended up working super well and we had good audio once he had settled with it on.
Not an uncommon technique but I often find that if it's not feasible to mic a character up, such as when working with young children, difficult costumes or within tight time constraints. Placing a mic on a character opposite the actor with dialogue, in such a way that it is able to capture both actors can actually sound almost as good as if the mic was directly on the actor.
Deity Microphones I lav’d up a bride and groom and caught a precious interaction after they walked down the aisle, “what do we do from here, we didn’t rehearse this far, wanna get out of here?” “Steven we’re marrrieddd”. I hid the mic on the dress for the bride, and in the collar for the groom. So helpful to watch your other video on hiding lavs!
One that I have done recently is using gaffer tape and taping the lav to the underside of a baseball hat bill to hide it and it gave a great signal for me to use.
I know this doesn’t have as much to do with capturing the audio but I’d love to see a tutorial on some basic post mixing that you should do to all your audio. Like removing noise, how to use compression correctly, normalizing, etc. I have stuff I do but I’m not sure if I’m doing it correctly!

I study at a cinema school in brazil and you show here how important the sound department is on the final quality of a movie. When people think about cinema, the straight thinking is about cinematography and the actors. I'm happy that Deity has this initiative to introduce the technics of a good audio in a movie. I would love to watch a video about setting up audio on sport scenes, like running, climbing, swimming...!! Sometimes the frame is too open and the boom doesn't make it. So, what we should do?

Or - could you make a video make a video about how to make your own wireless body pack system or the best budget wireless body pack system if it’s too hard to really make your own. It would be great to see some tips and recommendations for working in situations where you have to move quickly and adapt to a variety of different environments, such as interviews or coverage at events. Things like how to keep gear light and easy to carry whilst having the right kit to adapt to unforeseen scenarios and how to get levels and framelines quickly without holding up the camera. Great job on the video, concise and easy to follow with excellent advice. Perhaps make a video on where the Sound Mixer would position themselves on set physically as this interview happens. For example they need to be on set close enough to make any quick changes if lighting changes need to happen. They need to be able to see the cameras and the director, and how would the sound mixer communicate to the producer that the frequency had interference or the talent squashed their Lav mic when they touched their chest. My newest go to are hair mics. They work especially well in a car if the talent is turning their head looking out windows left and right. Also work especially well on Found Footage style filming.
Awesome video as always, Only downside to the content you upload, is the Murphy's law concerning the fact that I always see them after they would have been useful LOL. My question is: How would you approach a changing frame line situation(like a fast paced documentary, or dynamic narrative where the director is looking for an "authentic" occurrence that you could not plan ahead for) and how would you estimate the frame line without having "BOOM" screamed at you, while working in an ENG setup?

Hey Andrew, love the series and am learning a lot. One thing I would like is a good explanation of "boom" in terms the people lump shotgun all together, when booming a shotgun mic can mean so much since the boom shotgun mic could be used for outside and that mic needs a wider pickup then booming a shotgun mike indoors for an interview. What I see as confusion is taking the pickup patterns (cardioid, super cardioid, omni), and lumping them all into "shotgun mike". Which then leads to the statement than many reviewers like to say as "xxx is the best shotgun mike for general purposes" ... I am confused just trying to write the question.
Awesome video! It would be amazing if you guys talked about deliverables (most used file naming protocol). There are so many things to keep in mind when delivering audio. You can also add the most commonly used platforms for delivering big or small audio files. I think organization extremely important. Just discovering this August of 2020, and I love the presentation and production of this educational video. It’s concise and easily digestible. What I would like to learn next is: how to do this kind of audio setup in our current pandemic protocols and guidelines? What nuances or obvious treatments and precautions should we be aware of when mic-ing up talent nowadays to ensure the safety and comfortability of our talent and ourselves?
I really like these videos you are doing. Great work! What I would like to see more is the type of "artist's secret tips" videos. Like the one, you have made in the past about Foley artist job. You actually doing and the professional guys teaching how to make good footsteps, cloth sounds, stab sounds or whatever. It is so valuable to see what those professionals use and what are their input on it. But I am sure they are as well interested to see novice people trying out the art and even bringing fresh ideas on the table in some instances. These types of videos could be spread even wider like tips from foley, soundtrack, mixers, DJs and other professionals.
Nice work, as always! This channel is outstanding. I would love to see a video breaking down the hardware differences between entry-level, pro-sumer, and pro-level microphones. Crack open a d3 pro, an s-mic 2, and maybe a fancy Schoeps or something and talk about the hardware differences, and how you guys are able to offer that level of quality at such a good price. I’m trying to decide between the d3 pro and s-mic 2s at the moment and I’d love to know more about the nitty-gritty component differences. I’m also eyeing a lav setup, so the same thing for the lav lineup would be awesome. Thanks!

Great Video.! What about a video on simple methods to more seamlessly cut together audio from Deity's different mics or even the same one from different locations... with the emphasis on "SIMPLE" ? I see a lot of indie content these days that does a great job matching the look of different shots and transitioning creatively between them.... but they often really seem to struggle with doing the same for their audio. Again, love what you guys are doing.

I just wished that you had a bit longer clips of the lav vs shotgun mic as they were very short but I think I preferred how the lav sounded in this situation.

Hi just discovered your channel and this was super helpful. Hopefully this summer/fall I'm starting a passion project of interviewing veterans and was wondering if you guys had tips and tricks for finding the best, low budget, low number of equipment to get started.
I know you've done a few videos on laving up people, but If I could suggest an idea for a video, it would be an in detail look at the different sticky materials etc a location sound recordest would keep in their consumable kit. Go into detail with the different products used, what their properties are and the reasons for using them. I hear a lot of different medical tapes are used, but i'm never quite sure which ones are which, particularly as a lot of stuff are called different things in different places. Cheers.
Really enjoying the content guys! I would love to see a video on lav micing talent in a scene where there is a lot of movement, (fast walking, erratic movement and possibly even running) also in different outfits/ materials. It would also be great to hear what each of the mic positions sound like whilst on the move, even techniques that aren't as good as others would be interesting to hear and compare. Of course I'd also love a Connect interview kit! ;)
Part 1 I would love to see how a scene would be mic-ed for 8 or more people with primary characters having interactions with the background characters and the redundancies needed to do that. Part 2 Budget options for redundancy. I recently lost an interview with a professor because of a lack of redundancy as budget lav kit crapped out and my camera doesn't have a headphone out. I think you should make a video about using how to process the audio of a person speaking when the recording has a lot of envirmental sounds. Most youtube videos focus only on how to improve voice in quiet places but I haven't seen one when you improve the voice in an non ideal escenario.

Great stuff as always! I know you just covered set up for two and mentioned phasing. You guys had a nice set up and proper space to help fight against phasing. I run and gun a lot and try to do a single mic most of the time to avoid that. Unfortunately that doesn't always work. What's the best way to fight against phasing when you are not in that ideal studio/scene where you might be close to each other but a single mic won't do? Tips for pre show and post. Thank you!
Hey Andrew great video. I do multi person interviews but end up using one boom in the middle of two people which never gives a great sound. Would love the opportunity to have a lav kit that will mic up two people. . In hope of winning I have pre ordered a roll of butyl . If you happen to have the equipment, would it be worth using plant mics that are actually cardioid such as the mkh50. I'm in the lucky position of using university equipment until the end of spring, and I'm doing an interview like this, some things I'm lucky enough to use are an extra mkh50 and an ew300 wireless transmitter. Would this be worth it as a plant mic, especially as the ew300 isn't wired equivalent?

I would love to know what your best practice is for dealing with latency on wireless. My recorder has built in time code, but obviously if I'm recording both a wired boom and audio from my Deity Connect Lav the sound will be out of sync. Is there an automated way of dealing with this? Maybe I just need the interview kit so my boom can be wireless and have the same latency as well. Great content and great products guys!

Hey Andrew, love the series and am learning a lot. One thing I would like is a good explanation of "boom" in terms the people lump shotgun all together, when booming a shotgun mic can mean so much since the boom shotgun mic could be used for outside and that mic needs a wider pickup then booming a shotgun mike indoors for an interview. What I see as confusion is taking the pickup patterns (cardioid, super cardioid, omni), and lumping them all into "shotgun mike". Which then leads to the statement than many reviewers like to say as "xxx is the best shotgun mike for general purposes" ... I am confused just trying to write the question.
Awesome video! It would be amazing if you guys talked about deliverables (most used file naming protocol). There are so many things to keep in mind when delivering audio. You can also add the most commonly used platforms for delivering big or small audio files. I think organization extremely important. Explain the different kind of file formats used + everything that you can think of that has to deal with deliverables and file management.

Just discovering this August of 2020, and I love the presentation and production of this educational video. It’s concise and easily digestible. What I would like to learn next is: how to do this kind of audio setup in our current pandemic protocols and guidelines? What nuances or obvious treatments and precautions should we be aware of when mic-ing up talent nowadays to ensure the safety and comfortability of our talent and ourselves?

I really like these videos you are doing. Great work! What I would like to see more is the type of "artist's secret tips" videos. Like the one, you have made in the past about Foley artist job. You actually doing and the professional guys teaching how to make good footsteps, cloth sounds, stab sounds or whatever. It is so valuable to see what those professionals use and what are their input on it. But I am sure they are as well interested to see novice people trying out the art and even bringing fresh ideas on the table in some instances.
These types of videos could be spread even wider like tips from foley, soundtrack, mixers, DJs and other professionals.

I would love to see a video breaking down the hardware differences between entry-level, pro-sumer, and pro-level microphones. Crack open a d3 pro, an s-mic 2, and maybe a fancy Schoeps or something and talk about the hardware differences, and how you guys are able to offer that level of quality at such a good price. I’m trying to decide between the d3 pro and s-mic 2s at the moment and I’d love to know more about the nitty-gritty component differences.

Great Video.! What about a video on simple methods to more seamlessly cut together audio from Deity's different mics or even the same one from different locations... with the emphasis on "SIMPLE" ? I see a lot of indie content these days that does a great job matching the look of different shots and transitioning creatively between them.... but they often really seem to struggle with doing the same for their audio. Again, love what you guys are doing.
The sound of the supercardiod it's really awesome, do not tell the diference till you hear it side by side.

I just wished that you had a bit longer clips of the lav vs shotgun mic as they were very short but I think I preferred how the lav sounded in this situation.

Hi just discovered your channel and this was super helpful. Hopefully this summer/fall I'm starting a passion project of interviewing veterans and was wondering if you guys had tips and tricks for finding the best, low budget, low number of equipment to get started.
I know you've done a few videos on laving up people, but If I could suggest an idea for a video, it would be an in detail look at the different sticky materials etc a location sound recordest would keep in their consumable kit. Go into detail with the different products used, what their properties are and the reasons for using them. I hear a lot of different medical tapes are used, but i'm never quite sure which ones are which, particularly as a lot of stuff are called different things in different places. Cheers.

I would love to see a video on lav micing talent in a scene where there is a lot of movement, (fast walking, erratic movement and possibly even running) also in different outfits/ materials. It would also be great to hear what each of the mic positions sound like whilst on the move, even techniques that aren't as good as others would be interesting to hear and compare.
Of course I'd also love a Connect interview kit! ;)

Budget options for redundancy. I recently lost an interview with a professor because of a lack of redundancy as budget lav kit crapped out and my camera doesn't have a headphone out. Suggestions needed for a run and gun situation
I think you should make a video about using how to process the audio of a person speaking when the recording has a lot of envirmental sounds. Most youtube videos focus only on how to improve voice in quiet places but I haven't seen one when you improve the voice in an non ideal escenario.

Great stuff as always! I know you just covered set up for two and mentioned phasing. You guys had a nice set up and proper space to help fight against phasing. I run and gun a lot and try to do a single mic most of the time to avoid that. Unfortunately that doesn't always work. What's the best way to fight against phasing when you are not in that ideal studio/scene where you might be close to each other but a single mic won't do? Tips for pre show and post. Thank you!
Hey Andrew great video. I do multi person interviews but end up using one boom in the middle of two people which never gives a great sound. Would love the opportunity to have a lav kit that will mic up two people. . In hope of winning I have pre ordered a roll of butyl . If you happen to have the equipment, would it be worth using plant mics that are actually cardioid such as the mkh50. I'm in the lucky position of using university equipment until the end of spring, and I'm doing an interview like this, some things I'm lucky enough to use are an extra mkh50 and an ew300 wireless transmitter. Would this be worth it as a plant mic, especially as the ew300 isn't wired equivalent?

I would love to know what your best practice is for dealing with latency on wireless. My recorder has built in time code, but obviously if I'm recording both a wired boom and audio from my Deity Connect Lav the sound will be out of sync. Is there an automated way of dealing with this? Maybe I just need the interview kit so my boom can be wireless and have the same latency as well. Great content and great products guys!
I would love a video that gives tips on a more 'one man band run 'n gun' type of shoot. I shoot a lot of reality stuff by myself, and I can't always keep an eye on audio while operating the camera. Some tips on that would be great!
