Wonderful performance! Just so others know, this is an abridged version, with many ellipses and some variations in vocabulary, though it is quite faithul to the original text. To read the text out loud in full takes about 4 hours.

I am inclined to think the ghosts were there. The governess' description of Quint was very accurate. She never saw him or seen any pictures of him. The way Miles called her "my dear" was most inappropriate. It was as if Quint spoke to her. Also, both children played a trick on her so that Flora could sneak off to be with Miss Jessel by the lake. Miss Jessel took Flora in the boat because she could not row it herself.

The James' family certainly believed in the supernatural and attended seances. The modern take on the governess is that she is neurotic to the point of madness.Henry James is more likely to have believed in manifestations of the evil dead, like Quint and Miss Jessop who had the power to corrupt the innocent. I really love this novella.

The way the children behaved with the governess was very strange. The governess says the children appeared so good, yet they played tricks on her and ran rings round her.
