  • I got a base grinder!! That's a machine used to flatten the base of a ski/snowboard. In this video I do a quick overview of what its all about and how I hooked it up.

That looks a lot easier than doing it by hand! Hopefully you got a good deal on it, in my neck of the woods even used ones go for a pretty penny.

I'm dropping my first homemade skis off at my local shop for grinding next week, hoping they take good care of them! Your videos have been very helpful in the process, so thank you!

2 questions. Do you run each ski through twice or do you do one pass per ski? 2nd question how were the bad skis produced? Did you do it DIY with a handheld belt sander or did you have a botched run through the sander?

I run it through no less that 20 times for its first cleanup after getting pulled from the press. Actual qty. depends on belt courseness and how much epoxy found its way to the base.. I used to bring it to a ski shop to use their belt sander. A hand sander can heat the edges too hot and change their hardness, so I don't recommend that.

Have you figured a way to put structure on the base?

The only way I know is to take it to a shop and get a stone grind unfortunately. Wish I had a more DIY solution, future goals!
