The red X indicates to the train crew the crossing uses an automated horn system. If they are flashing (as they are in the video), the train crew knows to not sound their horn. If the red X is solid (not flashing) or not on at all, they need to use their horn or have a flagman guard the crossing as the gates and automated horns are malfunctioning or there is a power outage affecting that particular grade crossing.

That white collapsible tower is from public safety to monitor crowds. Yes, this section of the bike path has been left unattended for years. You were beside a marshaling yard for a demolished factory. The tracks are still embedded in the street. The train was pulling hard as it was going up the valley. From the vantage point of the wye, you were just south of the Big Four station site. Part of its platform exists. The abandoned tracks beside you did go to a factory but also the former Pennsylvania station (where Clark State has its Kuss Auditorium).
It breaks my heart when I see Springfield. I remember when it was a bustling city. International was in full swing. Machine shops and jobs everywhere. Buildings downtown had businesses in them and not torn down. 😢😢
My dad and I picked up our 65? International truck, Cab/Frame only and drove it home 150 miles. First Metallic Blue we purchased. Cool truck but no AC. 😅
Yes, 'urban renewal' run amok. So many buildings levelled for so few new ones. At least the block two blocks north of the first crossing is still mostly intact. Four buildings lost to 'progress'. One building lost to 'suspicious' fire, another small hotel was levelled for a pocket park.
Yep, and now we are regenerating those sites to recreate what we once had. The Core Block sit on a city block of 10s of levelled buildings and closed businesses for its and a now long defunct insurance company's second build. The company's first is owned by a local college and within sight of its successor. Talk has been to construct a third building on the block by removing the fountains. The brutalist design of the 1979 city hall building won awards for its combination of government and public use. The city's 1889 city hall is to Brian's right at 0:03. The park that he's standing in was the site of the city's previous market and city hall. The whole area was regenerated at that time.
Those weird horns are called "Wayside Horns". What they do is that they direct the sound to people near the crossings that are equipped with them so the train does not have to blow its horn from far out. This concentrates the sound to around the crossing, allowing the rest of the neighborhood to be quieter.
Oh yea. These are called wayside horns. They are installed at some quiet zone crossings. These litterly defeat the purpose or idea of a quiet zone (which I never supported to begin with) and their default horn tone is a bit bland sounding in my opinion. (The tone used here definitely sounds better) But I guess they are better than no horns. Still though, They are kind of pointless. I mean, if your gonna have a horn of any kind blowing at a crossing, you may as well have the train blow its own horn instead.
Interesting video JT. Glad to get a look at Springfield. Times are rough there. I don’t like the pole horns. If someone was walking across the tracks I don’t believe the horn activates enough time ahead of the train. Maybe the train could be going fast! Thanks JT. Stay safe. ❤

I'll bet Dayton put some in a few miles north of me. I.ve been here all 74 years and it was long ago we had steam whistles shrieking, shaking our teeth
Im a retired 19 yr (female) engineer with a class 1 railroad in Nebraska. Most towns, if the town can afford it, want whistle free intersections. It is FRA and requirement to have the large center curbs. At very busy intersections, because of liability, the RR’s have implemented these sirens. Both have saved numerous lives. Our center curbs are built higher per FRA specifications so that a vehicle cannot jump the curb to go around crossing gates. As someone who has hit a vehicle at an intersection (passenger got out in time) I’m a big supporter of these sirens and anything to make it safer for the public and the train crews.

Train goes through, about every 15 to 45 minutes. I lived near this my whole life in Springfield Ohio. You literally have to time out your travel, to get to other side of tracks when going somewhere. If the train stops on the tracks you have to go down town to the bridge to get to other side of town!
You had some interesting railfanning in Springfield and Wilmington, Ohio on 20 September 2024, Jaw Tooth! I do not understand the use of the horns at railroad crossings in a "No train Horn" zone. The horns seem to make as much noise as a train horn. That building adjacent to the first railroad crossing in Springfield has an odd shape due to the railroad tracks being on one side of it and the angular street on the other side of it. I was glad to see that you stood in the shade of the underside of the bridge over the railroad tracks when you captured the local coming back to the Norfolk Southern tracs from the west side of the wye. The heat can be brutal. I am glad that you stayed to capture that last train in Springfield, Ohio. It was wonderful to see the Norfolk Southern Heritage unit on the front of that loaded train of covered grain hopper cars. The short Indiana & Ohio Railroad train in Wilmington, Ohio was a bonus. It would have been nice to see more Indiana & Ohio trains in Wilmington, Ohio but sometimes you must leave one location to find a better location. (Posted on 22 September 2024 at 1935 CDT.)
Thanks Rick! There were homeless people in the woods and when I was near their camp someone threw something through the trees not far from me. I don't know if they were throughing it at me or just throwing stuff at random
I lived about a half mile from those West Main Street crossings in Springfield. A lot of rail traffic in Springfield when i was young - I remember steam locomotive whistles in the mid to late '50s echoing up toward my house. West of town is a grade and I'd hear the steam locos driver wheels sliding on icy tracks up that grade at night when I was in bed.
The white tower thing in the air with round things on the sides are police cameras ( they're "watching" from above ) for high crime areas. Columbus has them too downtown and a few other areas... "Ohio Dept of Public Safety" label on it . My Dad was born / raised in Springfield back in 1933... RIP ❤️. He died in Jan 2024 . 90 yrs old and was stubborn AF & me too... lol
The grain train with the heritage unit was a great one! With the NYC locomotive and the awesome sound of working hard, it may have been your catch of the day! 😃😃😃😃❤❤❤❤
Hey JT! We've had this issue locally in San Diego, but my question is, who doesn't like the sound of a train horn? I also think it's cool that there are more women in the trades! I recently became a Class A truck driver and love it! I also considered a job with the railroad! I'm 56 and wish I had these opportunities in high school, but better late than never! Take Care and be safe out there!
I agree. I love the train horns. I see this engineer on this line every few weeks or so and also I see a female engineer on CSX every once in a while. She said hi to me once when their train stopped lol
Sugarland TX has these also. 1st time I heard them I laughed. It is the worst sound. To me, it sounds like a recording played on a children's Fisher Price See 'n Say.
Ay sweet! Have you ever been to London Ohio for trains? They got a NS Line going right thru downtown and it’s pretty active to my knowledge, they had at least 5 trains a day when I lived there. I now live in Union county (one county north of London)
Just imagine a train coming if you’re still asleep in the bed and those box horns woke you up you would think that those horns were just for to scare you lol
Hey Brian, thanks for sharing Springfield's nutty, fake train-horns. I'm just shaking my head in disbelief. First the city goes and bans the trains using their own horns at crossings. Then they spend presumably taxpayer money putting in these fake signal horns. WTF?? It has to be one of the most stupid uses of funds ever. Wouldn't it have been more logical and sensible to just lift the train-horn ban? Just Crazy!! Thanks again for sharing, buddy. 🙂
The guest at the Marriott kept complaining about the trains horn. So they made the crossings electronic horns. I swear they are just as loud sometimes.
@@curtisowens3262 Hmm Perhaps the Marriott should have built elsewhere or made thicker wall . I stayed at a Marriott once a long a highway. The traffic was so loud, as if I were sleeping outside.
I am going to go back soon. There was something that I wanted to film but when I was about to film it I had a lady approach me wanting money and something else lol
They are the wayside horns, JT. My hometown of Grand Island has has one wayside horns downtown and the rest of downtown is a quiet zone for Union Pacific. BNSF doesn't have a quiet zone in Grand Island
Why so many negative comments? A real train horn can be heard for miles, these are more localized. I used to run through there in the middle of the night and felt bad for waking up the whole town. The crossings are so close together it was a constant horn blow for a few minutes.
That signal at milepost 185 is 35 miles from my house in west Columbus. I live next to this track and where it goes 2 tracks to one is CP 150. Wonder how long that old Conrail/NYC signal will be there. I’m originally from Springfield and this line was a lot busier during the Conrail years with Buckeye Yard still in full operation.
You should try filming in Quincy Ohio… It is right near the champagne county Logan County line. It is on state Route 235 in Quincy Ohio. They have some really long trains there like two or 3 miles plus. They also have a double diamond. It is a CSX main one and two.
The horns sound like they're being blasted through a 1960s-era portable transistor radio.

Thanks Rick! There were homeless people in the woods and when I was near their camp someone threw something through the trees not far from me. I don't know if they were throughing it at me or just throwing stuff at random
Nothing compares to the sound of a Nathan train horn, nice video and footage, nice catch on the NYC 🗽 EMD!🛤🚂
You got that right!
Very cool Jaw Tooth. Thanks for posting ,Train horns on poles. What's next 😀 as always you do a great Job. Look forward to more, I See You. 😀🥴❤️😅
Thanks for watching!
I like filming there. I plan on going back soon. Thanks for watching my video!
Great video Jaw. But if those were here in South Carolina- it have a wasp nest or squirrels in it without a cover on it
The white tower thing in the air with round things on the sides are police cameras
( they're "watching" from above )
for high crime areas. Columbus has them too downtown and a few other areas...
"Ohio Dept of Public Safety" label on it .
My Dad was born / raised in Springfield back in 1933... RIP ❤️. He died in Jan 2024 . 90 yrs old and was stubborn AF & me too... lol
Great job Brian!👏
@@gaborandrejszki2553 thanks Gabor!
@@gaborandrejszki2553 I’m filming today and I just filmed 2 trains in a row on tracks in front and behind me
@@JawTooth You're welcome!
@@JawTooth Nice
I have always wanted to go to this crossing myself to check it out
Thanks for watching my videos!
The grain train with the heritage unit was a great one! With the NYC locomotive and the awesome sound of working hard, it may have been your catch of the day! 😃😃😃😃❤❤❤❤
The train horn would sound so much better than those tinny pole horns. I enjoy all your videos. Thanks.
Thanks for watching!
Good Work.
Thank you! Cheers!
Those things sound terrifying especially if you hear them at night
They have a haunting sound to them. I like the regular train horns better
Hi Jaw & it's is Randy and i like yours video is Cool & Thanks Jaw & Friends Randy
Hello my friend Randy!
@@JawTooth Cool!
Nice job catching those trains jaw tooth keep it up and be safe while you’re doing your Railfanning thing out there please
Thanks! Will do!
Sugarland TX has these also. 1st time I heard them I laughed. It is the worst sound. To me, it sounds like a recording played on a children's Fisher Price See 'n Say.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you Jaw Tooth, those horns are lame! Great Show
Thanks for watching!
Wow. Some of those orange Hapag-Lloyd containers look really bright if you're just entering the room with the screen running.
Jaw Tooth . How does this horn adjust for train speed ?? Great video as usual
That was pretty neat to see the New York Central Heritage unit. Those horns on the poles sounded awful
I agree. I like regular train horns
FYI..I just saw the NS Heritage unit today in Greencastle PA...
Cool.
I agree. I don't like them either. they have they because the sound doesn't travel as far. Thanks for watching!
So the town allows obnoxious cars but are offended by train horns 🥴🤔
The guest at the Marriott kept complaining about the trains horn. So they made the crossings electronic horns. I swear they are just as loud sometimes.
Those horns are awful.
They sound like AI horns. Waste of money.
@@curtisowens3262 Hmm Perhaps the Marriott should have built elsewhere or made thicker wall . I stayed at a Marriott once a long a highway. The traffic was so loud, as if I were sleeping outside.
I&O blows their horns through there
Nice Video
Thanks
Merci beaucoup pour cette très belle vidéo ! 🌟
Thanks for watching!
@@JawTooth You're welcome. Have a nice day!
Incredible video Mr Jawtooth any catch for DPU’s
Thanks for watching! I didn't see any DPUs that day
I guess you could say with all those limbs on that abandoned track it must have been a “branch” line,😅😅😅😅😅
Congrats on the New York Central Heritage Unit.
Thanks!
We were in Springfield Ohio at the same time! Sorry I missed seeing you!
I am going to go back soon. There was something that I wanted to film but when I was about to film it I had a lady approach me wanting money and something else lol
@@JawTooth We just swung through on the way to Chicago. But if you're ever down Virginia Beach way, let me know!
True, the residents don't like the horn. I can't blame them since they live there
That signal at milepost 185 is 35 miles from my house in west Columbus.
