This is the story of the birth of modern chess - when the possibilities of chess as an art, a science and a sport all converged.
The point of convergence was a young boy from Louisiana named Paul Morphy. At a time when America was seen as a backwoods nation with little cultural history and even less intellectual impetus, at a time when chess was considered the exclusive property of a few European countries, at a time when the game was played successfully by a handful of men wizened by years, Paul Morphy, in the brief span of 19 months and with seemingly little effort, defeated conclusively every player he met.
While today few non chess players even know his name, he was one of the most famous celebrities of his time and within the hallowed halls of the chess playing community he is considered by some as the greatest chess player of all time.
But this diminutive, unassuming boy rose to fame almost out of nowhere and once he secured his place in history, he retired back into that hazy unknown, shunning the public eye, never again to play serious chess. Not only was he one of great practitioners of the game, but also one of it's greatest enigmas. He's been given the sobriquet, The Pride and Sorrow of Chess.

Barnes declines 2 gambits and beats Morphy.

I wonder if Morphy assumed that Barnes couldn't turn down any material so prepared for him to take on of the 2 gambitted pawns

Why are all of agadmator’s video titles so good🤣🤣
This one is especially good
These Barnes v Morphy games are some of the funnest games I've seen in a long time.
I can't wait to see half of this video in the next Agadmator's Best Moments. "I'm Paul Morphy, that's how I roll."

I liked the video before even watching it...I'm an excellent subscriber Antonio!
(@4:00 I'm thinking maybe Barnes saw until this point and feared that Bxf7+, King takes and Rf1+ . Didn't double check with a module and probably it doesn't achieve much, but it's a risky variation, which we know Barnes to have avoided in the past)
Enjoying this Morphy saga! Thank you, agadmator.
Well I immediately knew the bishop move when you said feel free to pause the video. Whew! What a slugfest.for the first time I wanted Barnes to win.i also want a Barnes and Morphy T-Shirt with the chess board
Still Agad ventures off to never played never would have been played idiocy as always. You see his head bobbing during the viewer finding period is there but reduced. You know this video is about a year old. Prior to that Agad bobbed his head like an empty gourd every time he told you to find a move. These days he has found control of his bobbing head but there was a transition period during which Agad bobbed just a little because he could not stop the gourd from rocking around in there.
I saw that Nxe4 without pousing.
The first time king's Evans Morphy never ceases to amaze
Imagine when we get the tshirt and people in the bar and library ask about who is the man in your t-shirt.Lovely
Who would have thought in all of chess history we would raising a glass to an obscure master like Thomas Barnes in 2020? I like these "good stuff" videos and perhaps we shall see more profiles of the unsung great masters of the 19th century when there is some downtime in our current world of chess. I'm sure we will. The Agadmator seems only too happy to be our tour guide.
This is why I love Tal, sometimes you need to skip all the formalism and do the things that your opponents not expecting!!
That no-reverse-gear Barnes is a madman!
Man.. Barnes is full of surprises!
Good commentary, great game. Even if Morphy draws out the game in a stalemate, that's o.k. If you can't win a game, at least go for a stalemate, smart move!
Time for a Barnes saga!
Dear Agad, would you mind considering analysing any good game you know featuring a closed sicilian (perhaps the Grand Prix)? I couldn't find any B23 game in the channel. Thanks for all your work.

I love this Barnes guy!!!
Barnes says "I do not want to see h5 on the board" so he plays h5. Beautiful
Only Agad can make a chess match sound like UFC Rematch: 'I'm not gonna say better than the previous ones, its not worse, its just out there, they're just brawling it out'!
Holy crap, the King Evan's Gambit
At 1:06 if the black bishop takes the b4 pawn, the d2 pawn is pinned to the king and cannot move up 2 spaces. Just a little mistake but what really was the point of the gambit?
"because I'm Paul Morphy that's how I roll"
I'm glad that I actually found the knight e4 :)
Apparently Smyslov of all people, when he was a billion years old, won a game by also declining the king's evans gambit.
I'm Paul Morphy that's how I roll. ~agadmator. Best line
You know those kind of films where the empathy for the villain is stronger than the the good morality the film wants to leave you by its main character? Well, there you go
This Barnes guy is a monster.
At 9.41 ,,,,,,,, Morphy knight to H7 would have been check mate !
First time I liked a chess video in the 4th move.
I live right off of a road called Barnes. True story. Probably no relation to the chess player though :)
What is the chess app which you are using in your videos
Imagine if Paul Morphy really said "Because im Paul Morphy thats how I roll" 8:50
I almost played g2 but then decided on activating the king instead. I've only been playing for like...6 months so hopefully forgivable
Love from Kerala... ❤
11:49 it has to be bishop to F1, right?
What would have happened if Murphy had went bishop to e6 instead of bishop to f3?
I’m so confused at the start, if the akc bishop just ate the pawn, then white can’t even use d2 to d4 because it’s open checked... Im new
Could Barnes have become world chess champion at that time, if he played for it, without Morphy also playing for championship? Seems likely strong candidate for the win.
sleeping Medo missing the game, he must be heartbroken
Early on in the video I was thinking “woah this looks bad for Morphy how is he going to pull this off?” Then in the end game when he said Morphy was trying to trick Barnes into a draw I was like “what what? Why would Morphy do that? He’s the one who wins” then when he said “it was in this position..” I was like “wait... no... it can’t be.. but.. they said.. it can’t... how? Why? Is anything real anymore? Is there a god? Would a god allow this? I’m starting to feel sick... Mom?? Is that you? But I thought you were.. no I’m still single. Its not because I don’t iron my shirts Mom, I’m just not ready for anything serious right now. Ok I’ll iron them ok? And tell uncle Joe I said what’s up, he’ll know what it means” “Morphy resigned” “dang I’ve never heard about him losing before, oh well”
Bro can you give Friday arena link when your videos come on Friday or Thursday
Bruh, did someone seriously donated you a full bitcoin? That is huge! congrats man!
wait...if the king is in check, ONLY the king can move??? spent years in matches where if any other piece can eliminate the threat, then that was the obvious move. makes sense why our games were a lot less... form lol that changes my whole record, but hey at least all my losses are forgiven too lol
if at 9:42 The Knight had been move to H7 It might Game over ...
At 10:05 why can't we play Knight to h7 can someone explain?
You know damn well i would have played g2 there
Morphy lost first 4(!) games, but after this beat him very badly
3:25 Well I found the move Barnes played ;D
10:05 isn’t Nh7 mate??
Makes me proud of my surname.
I get positions like these all the time because I don't know a single opening after 4 moves.
What you know 4 moves!!!??
The same (theoretical) endgame I had against my bestfriend I was afraid I will lose, but I was in time to capture his good pawn, and went back to the corner cause I knew he won't be able to force me out with his bad bishop, I offered him a draw and told him its a draw, but of course he wanted to grind it, I just repeated king moves Ka1 Kb2.

Fascinating that Barnes consistently achieves fantastic positions and misses the simplest tactical resources. Same here.

I like to think Morphy knew it might take 150 years for the chess world to fully appreciate the majesty of what he was doing, but he knew that Mr. Barnes would understand.

I never thought Morphy in his prime could lose with the white pieces. Barnes is just a monster 👏
I think he is a little before his prime still
Morphy can lost a few game for match or he could be ill, drank, sleepless or reckless. But indeed if he wants to win a game No one can stop Morphy, not even Magnus.
Barnes can win against morphy by playing f6 on move one!!

Well spoken.
I can’t imagine Barnes missed Nxe4-it just seems crazy to me that someone at Barnes’ level could overlook such a tactic. Maybe Barnes saw that Morphy could relieve tension by trading the Queen for Knight+Rook, and thought this would be letting Morphy off too easy? Either way, very strange!
i think he just wanted to have fun like morphy giving up the xchange. no huge prizes back then
My feeling is he didn't want to go into a line where it would take a long time of playing accurately to win. I think he decided to try to keep improving positionally.
Maybe he was just playing for attrition until the late game? He was ahead and could more easily choose his trades, I'm guessing he was just cautious.

This video is not on the Morphy Saga playlist as far as I can tell. Generally, the playlist is pretty messed up with the same video appearing multiple times etc... This is my first comment on one of these videos, so I feel obliged to add that I adore your videos. Thank you so much for many great hours of chess!
I just feel it would have been so much easier if Barnes hadn't captured on c4 and played a6 to guard his b5 pawn. Then, he could have just pushed g2 for the win.
After the couple of seconds I thought about the same idea than Barnes with the bishop.
It just seems nice, I think it's because it forces your opponent to react to your moves. In comparison, playing the knight doesn't force Morphy to capture it.
