Sony Xperia XZ3 Long-Term Review | Still worth it in 2019?

- Long-term review of the Sony Xperia XZ3, a month before the launch of the XZ4 at MWC 2019. Should you still buy the XZ3 flagship phone, or hold off for the new handset?
Sony's latest premium mobile stands apart from rivals in many ways, from the unique design to the impressive set of custom features. Even months following its launch, the Xperia XZ3 excels for media thanks to that superior OLED screen and the impressive audio chops. And while Sony has stuck with a single lens camera for the back end, this mobile can shoot great-looking photos and brilliant 4K HDR video - although the results at night aren't quite a match for the Huawei Mate 20 Pro or LG's V40.
Of course, with the imminent launch of the new XZ4 flagship, would we still recommend the XZ3 - especially as you'll be getting the speedy and power-efficient Snapdragon 855 chipset, and possibly a fully-evolved new Motion Eye camera?

I have the XZ3 and actually I really like the Dynamic Vibration System, especially when watching music videos, whereas the Side Sense feature - leaves a lot to be desired...
Yeah, dynamic vibration is good... But I have to leave it 1...2 and 3 are a little too much vibration for myself 😂

2024 and i still use it.
Performance just like first day and battery life still 2 fully days with single charge.

Great review Tech!! I had the XZ3 but returned it b/c I felt the XZ2 Premium's camera was 2 steps better. IF it had had the XZ2 P's camera though, I would've kept it. The XZ3's camera took GREAT daytime outdoor shots and selfies, but indoor shots and also low-light/nighttime shots did not fair well IMO. I was getting the "oil painting" effect with my indoor shots which was very disappointing.
However, the upcoming XZ4 (aka N1??) will have a TRIPLE lens setup and much better camera sensors (600 and 500-level ones vs. the 398 the XZ3 has), plus improved software I'm sure, as well as the VERY important introduction of OIS, which will IMPROVE low-light/nighttime shots ftw. Add the increased RAM, battery size AND never-before-seen 21:9 body ratio (which means NO more black bars when watching movies and many vids since the native screen ratio used for filming movies IS 21:9!), and the XZ4/N1 is SURE to be a real winner!!

I see a repeat of XZ2P, everyoneis firing about the xz4, but Sonys still holding its XZ3P cards hidden.
I think sony will suprise us and reveal that the "xz4 leaks" were always the xz3P, because if you had everyone waiting on the 4, and they cant wait, then you reveal that the 4 hasnt even been started yet and everyones adoring the 3premium, then that 4 is going to be even better and more anticipated.
@@evzevz06 IF they call this phone the XZ3 Premium, that would be hilarious, though I guess not entirely surprising. But since Don Mesa stated they would be trying to release LESS phones per year (aka, a GOOD thing! lol), I'm gonna stick with XZ4 or N1, which I like even more b/c it signifies them doing something NEW and different.......... a trend they started last year but didn't quite perfect IMO.

Love Xperia have had Samsung and iPhone and they were great phones but they weren’t Sony....I love music and so does Sony so that’s the deal breaker sound quality is phenomenal especially with Bluetooth .

Watching this in Xperia Z1 using it for 5 years now, won't die, not only that, it works great, sometimes it makes me think the whole Ram memory thing is a gimmick, I know it's not, I was surprised though seeing many other reviewers hitting on this phone so much, 1 more thing, I was surprised when pocophone came out, but didn't rush on it, so now XZ3 costs just 100 eur. more then the poco, it is a no-brainer for me. Last thing, you know some company is worth it, when you want to change the phone that you have for 5 years, but yet find no real reason to, and you still want to go with the same company.

I,v had Sony experia flagship phones since the z1, boy they know how to make them. The batteries have always been very good, the screens have 1st class and some really great designs. The bezels have never been distracting to me, I think it actually defines the Sony brand it may sound daft, but that's just my opinion. I currently have the xz3 in that red and it does look classy, I got bored with black phones a few years ago cos everyone seemed to have black. That was a great review of the xz3 😎

Yeahhhh...those bezels also came with dual front stereo speakers...i have no complain from the previous omni balance design and side fingersensor
Love my XZ3, this is my 4th Sony phone after an XZ1 compact I and can't imagine going for the smaller size handset now, the display is fantastic but one of the first this I disabled was the side sense feature as i was constantly closing down the current page by just moving a finger. I find the battery life very good also and glad Sony reintroduced the double tap on the screen to wake the phone up.

Im still using Xperia z5 compact till now, and I liked it. Probably because it suits my 9 year old hand. Ffuwaaaaaah!!

I didn't end up buying the Xperia XZ3 and don't see buying it, from what I heard does not have Xperia Actions. When looses a large chuck of automation functionality. Feature is has: night mode timed, portrait mode while during bed hours, no notification while gaming, etc... Sony want to be all Ai future, but automating is more important by setting the peramators, rather than just guess app tricks. I think they can move the AI guess next apps in slider drawer where optional sponsors apps are as I pull that recent apps drawer more than a direct type app search. I'm using a XZ2 Premium, and hope the next phone has all the software.
Here the thing. I like Sony cause the add unique functionality tricks, but I hate when they drop them and don't ever want a 3rd party app to ever do them; i.e. screen record Z5 feature, write on screen with pen sensitivity Z Ultra feature, Xperia Actions a XZ Premium and before up to about T3 Ultra.
The basics: Sony teases us by turning off and on different phone functionalities you would think is standard between high and mid-range devices: glove mode, gyroscope, LTE button (sprate from call network vs mobile internet data), option to set answer all calls via speaker (that what feature my mom likes). Face ID sometimes works janky ends to be fixed.
Since you are a tech reviewer, you have to speak for us to the main guys at Sony at these events, and say HEY where is Xperia Actions from your previous phones?
I see the Xperia Assist button 4:06, can you click it and on top is suppose to be the Xperia Actions section.
Great review. Now Sony needs to up their marketing strategy. Many countries do not sell their phones anymore and service centers closed. I have a damaged xz premium and no service center in sight that can fix the phone.
If I was giving out the awards for the best phone in 2018 I would give it to this Sony.

A very good review of a beautiful phone. I have a feeling that the current well publicised issues with Huawei and Google will see a surge in sales for other companies, and Sony's smartphones will do very well indeed!
I am watching it for the 3th time via Xperia 1.... As daily drivers I am with Nokia 9 and Xperia 1 but damn..... Xz3 is so beautiful
I have always LOVED SONY MOBILES, I've always wanted to own one but the only thing holding me back is the price...
Not that it is not as worthy as other expensive offerings but because no phone should ever exceed 10 months worth of rent money for a 3 BHK house !
I live in India and the economy here isn't as strong as some other countries and the bizarre import taxes don't help either...
If it were a sub Rs.40,000 phone I may be able to own one on a stretch of expense...
But the as currently even the XZ2 costs about Rs. 72,000...
That simpy is unjustified...!
I hope SONY does one bit for their fans and pull down on prices...

Love your zero fucks given approach. I left Sony behind a few years ago after too much over hype with the screen and camera. Samsung did a far better job. (and no I'm not a fan boy) I think the mate 20 pro is my next option even into the summer.

Excellent phone however i'm not an OLED fan.. I've used many Samsung phones and the displays look cartoony and cheap.. I'm happy with my current XZ2 :)

Can you recommend the best 512Gb memory card for this phone? I have been using a Huawei one and it's God awful deletes files apart from iso files as soon as they are transfered over.

Wife has been using this phone for 2 months with shit load of apps open and everything, no slow down or anything for her. Also runs PUBG on high settings. We have the 6GB memory version. xD

The cameras are great but that's the only advantage it has over my LG V30. The 835 has almost the same speed as the 845 with most apps and games there isn't really a noticeable difference and I want a bigger screen like the Note 9. So I'm not upgrading yet, I might get the next Sony phone if it has a bigger screen and a noticeable difference in speed from the V30.
My review
It slippery and slides off everything and out of pockets, scratches very easily including the paint on the bezels that comes off leaving silver metal.
The screen is amazing but the curve is annoying and makes it difficult to press small buttons on websites.
The camera is good.
But it’s delicate and never going to last 2 years contract.
The warranty say you will have to pay to get it repaired when it vibrates and commits Harry carry off the side of your desk.
Well, you are right when you say that Sony is staying different than the competition even now with the X1( witch is a little bit wired with that 21:9).Killing the themes app it s a big shame because most of the competition have a theme engine (HTC still free, still the best).But you better kill that app rather to take Samsung idea to force you to change your theme every 15 days.Camera in the Sony is very good in day time and one of the worst in night time.

Yep. Very original. It's funny too because so many are obsessed with iphones and apple and don't realize that Jobs was obsessed with Sony, and directed them to emulate Sony any way they can. He also hired Sony's lead designer to design the 1st iPhone. Of course he changed the 2 buttons to 1 and then pretended it was entirely apple's own design because Jobs... not stealing something.... yeah right!
Stunning phone for sure, however the lack of face recognition and awful fingerprint sensor didn’t make it good enough for 2018, never mind for 2019.
I can verify that the XZ3 DOES have facial recognition. Whoever told you it doesn't is full of shit. lol
Rock2005Star I’ve had the phone, it has the smart approval whatever it’s called; but it doesn’t have facial detection close to the level of the Galaxy line or IPhone XR/X/XS which is its competition.
@@marcgains6605 Hey Marc.........Yeah I'd prob agree with that. Like 75-80% of the time for the two weeks I had my XZ3, the face unlock feature worked fine. But the other 20-25% it didn't. Whereas my current OnePlus 6T's face unlock works like 100% of the time, even in the dark (lights up the screen to help with brightness). So I'm with you in hoping they improve that on both the XZ3 and future XZ4/N1, etc.

The bezels look great on this phone and they are practical, I mean you have thumbs don't you? You want to rest them somewhere when you are using it on landscape mode. I really can't understand this "bezel less" trend is going on with smartphones. And guess what, it's not possible at least not yet for our market. But I guess people will prefer a anus hole in their screen instead of thin bezels. Talk about stupidity...

For me this phone is way faster and better ram management than 6t (no kidding) but the awful design and software makes this phone like meh. Stunning display btw . Looking foward xperia xz4 this mwc19

I would pick it for the sole purpose of it doesn't have a stupid notch.
@@TheRealConflictedGaming I love the notch on the Oneplus 6t which I choose over the Sony mainly due to the price and storage. The 6t has horrible vibration and the screen isn't bright enough in direct sunlight. Two things reviewers don't emphasize enough
@@marcjohn7416 I would say if I had to pick a phone with a notch it would prob be the 6t, the tear drop isn't too bad, I do prefer bezels though, I like the bit of space on the sides to give me something that isn't screen to hold when I'm watching videos or playing games
@@TheRealConflictedGaming good points. The teardrop is blocked out in most apps by default so it basically looks like a bezel. But having your fingers rest on the screen can cause accidental presses. Also the speaker placement on the 6t makes it easy to block it with your hands in landscape. All problems I didn't have with my older Sony z5 phone and its front firing speakers. It's a pity Sony's design choices are not the trend because we sacrifice a lot for this high screen body ratio. Hopefully the xz4 comes with better storage and a skin similar to oxygen os. Hands down the best version of android
