- Amish White Bread
2 cups warm water (100° to 110°)
2/3 cup white sugar
1 1/2 tablespoon active dry yeast
1 1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup oil
6 cups bread flour
In bowl, dissolve sugar in the warm water. Stir in yeast and allow to proof until foamy.
Add oil.
Stir the salt into the flour. Then add flour slowly. Knead dough lightly on a floured surface. Place in an oiled bowl and turn to coat. Cover and allow to rise for about one hour in an oven with just the lightbulb on.
Punch the dough down, knead for a few minutes, and divide in half. Shape into loaves and place into two very well oiled loaf pans. Allow to rise 30 minutes in the oven with the lightbulb on or until the dough is about 1 inch above the pans. Remove from the oven and preheat the oven to 350°. Bake for 30 minutes.

At first, I wasn't sure what I thought about the way uou so methodically taught us your recipes. However, I've become a real fan and love learning from you. At 75 yrs old, that's a real compliment. You are the best!
Hi thr bread looks so good. I wish i had the things you have so i could make some
🍞👍👍🍞
Looks great. Now that you've made us hungry for homemade bread, how about a good sour dough recipe.
Thank you for a simple, easy, excellent bread recipe! I made this recipe today and it is light and fluffy…delicious! I used all purpose flour and removed two tablespoons per cup and replaced with two tablespoons of Vital Wheat Gluten, which converted my flour to bread flour. It works likes a charm and saves a trip to the grocery store.
That is beautiful bread! If you don't mind, I'll take my piece from the inner part. Seeing this particular recipe, you method & explanation gives me revived hope of baking bread myself again. Melissa, I think the covering of the yeast helps maintain the warmth of the yeast growing environment just as it helps the bread to rise. That is my hypothesis. Now, question pertaining to your Kitchen Aid mixer. I have seen 2 ladies on YT who had the same mixer as yours until the motor burned up /had a problem w/the sliced power cord. Upon research, I learned that the company highly recommended the mixers be serviced every 2 yrs. Have you experienced these problems w/ your mixer, or do have it regularly serviced?
I wish more shows/videos had a Melissa who asks questions that folks at home are asking so that the person doing the task can answer and explain to the viewing audience.
And she's great with the camera! I wouldn't be surprised if we start to see some overhead shots sometime in the future.😊
Dos Melissa Cook meals daily, or do you?
Good idea
❤ Can You Use A Hand Mixer
Nothing says home, like the smell of bread baking
Really enjoy your presentations. I’m 78 years old and you’re teaching me new things. Thank you!
Thank you so much for not editing out the Kitchen Aid dough hook blooper! As you said, this is real life. Not Hollywood!
Any man that can make homemade bread like Tom is definitely a keeper! Love your videos. Thank you so much you two!
My momma grew up in Dutch country in Pennsylvania. She used to make homemade bread all the time. She made potato bread before it was in the stores. This reminds me of home. Thank you, Tom & Melissa, for the precious memories. 💖
Hi we are watching your channel from Michigan. I am a teacher as well..I teach at a Catholic School. I teach first and second grade combined. It is so nice to watch someone baking and cooking and not using foul language or any other inappropriate talk. Thank you for the wonderful recipes we enjoy them everyday ..God bless you.😊
We appreciate your kind words. Thank you very much for being a part of our channel. It's great having you with us at the able.
Hello from a fellow Michigander & I feel the same way!
I am a retired teacher who agrees!
@@comesitatmytable9044 I'm so lucky. I use very old Yeast & very little. Results are fine. But You've said nothing wrong. Keep cookin'!
My 12 yr old granddaughter is visiting this week and we just made this bread! My bil made bread all the time, and I remember all the kneading he did and how amazing the smell was! This is my first time making bread, same for my granddaughter. It was a great memory making time spent together!❤❤❤
I know the feel. I am a 73 year old retired teacher in CA. Delayed memory is so true! 😅
I definitely recommend keeping your yeast in the freezer. It will keep fresh soo much longer!
Yes, I keep mine in the freezer too!
I’ve kept it in the freezer for a year and it’s still alive and works wonderfully! Homemade bread. Yum!!!!!
Thank ypu. I heard that also.
P.S. The jar said it expired about 6 months ago. If it's still working, I'm still using it😊
That's where I keep mine
If you keep your yeast in the freezer, it will keep for years. I get my yeast in bulk sometimes. If I keep it froze, always keeps for several years. I enjoy your channel so much. You explain everything so clearly & I like the way you show what ingredients go into what you are making. Ya’ll seem like such good people
@TammyFunk4056 can you then just use it straight out of the freezer? Or does it need to warm up first?
@@cathylongstreth5405 I just get the jars & keep mine in the refrigerator but if I could get bulk I would freeze as well. I have found that it does affect the ability to proof/raise right if I don't let it warm up first.
@@cathylongstreth5405 I keep my yeast in the freezer also. I will measure out my yeast first and then put the rest of my yeast right back in the freezer, then I gather up the rest of my ingredients, by the time I get all of that done, my yeast is right at room temp and it's ready to go into your warm water with sugar.
I enjoy watching your videos so much. I’m 62 and never had a mixer like that only a hand mixer. I’ve always told myself it was a luxury I couldn’t afford and I always saw my mom and grandmother do everything by hand. So therefore I always felt that I should do it by hand too. Maybe one day I’ll change my mind. Thank you and Melissa for giving me something to look forward too every night as I wind down for bed. May you both be blessed!
I don't have a grand mixer like that either. I rather think putting it away would snap me.
You don’t need a stand mixer to make bread. I use a cheap hand mixer with a dough beater to make sourdough bread…..so easy… takes about 7 to 10 minutes to get the dough ready for the first rise.
My husband got me a stand mixer years ago. I was making whole wheat bread for our family every week (home ground wheat) and I developed carpal tunnel (not from making the bread, from other work I was doing), and it became too painful to knead the stiff dough by hand. He didn’t want to miss my bread, so he bought me the mixer. Now that I’m in my 60’s, the carpal tunnel was fixed ages ago but I’ve developed arthritis in my hands and it’s helpful once again. It is definitely heavy but I consider it weight training, for now. 😂
I'm your age and make mine by hand as well. With the arthritis in my hands I would love to have a mixer but isn't in the budget. I definitely feel the effects from kneading but only making it for myself means I don't do it often. It's worth it!
I baked bread when my middle son was a baby. We have pictures of my oldest son helping me knead bread. I could start my bread to rising and go do something else, like laundry. Kneading was a great way to work off some frustration. But I tell you one thing. NOTHING beats a slice of warm bread right out of the oven, slathered up with butter. Same goes for homemade biscuits. I used a wooden spoon to stir up my dough. It worked fine. Thanks for reminding me of some sweet memories.
I learned standing on a chair with Momma behind me reaching around and guiding my hands. At 62 I still make bread! Cooking & baking with your children is a timeless art not enough people do anymore. Sweet memories indeed!
Oh my goodness. I love you two. You’re so funny. I mess up in my kitchen all the time. My husband is like slow down over there, you’re going to hurt yourself or LOOK OUT . 😂😂 I love homemade bread and I haven’t made it for years. This is such a easy recipe I think I will be making it. Thank you… 🙏🏻🙏🏻
If it ain't messy it ain't good
This is a sign of a very good cook 🙂👍
Hello. Love your show. The term you were looking for is Danish Dough Whisk. Especially good for heavier mixtures.
I’ve even used it to mix meatloaf mixture up
I've been making home made bread for years. I'm 77. My mother taught me and my grandmother taught my mother. We have a farmhouse bread recipe we all like to make. It is very much like your recipe. I sometimes make rolls instead of loaves or both. I actually have expanded my breadmaking with numerous other recipes. As you said, there's nothing like the aroma of bread baking. I love your videos and have tried numerous recipes from your kitchen. We love the chocolate chip oatmeal cookies!
And you continue to do so!! Teach your littles how to continue. 😊
Have you tried his “world’s best brownies” recipe? If not try it and thank him and me later!!
Hi Tom and Melissa..
What beautiful loaves of bread! The texture is so perfect! Thank you…for another keeper…When my family was young I made all of our bread and would bake several times a week…there is nothing more satisfying than kneading the dough, my kitchen aid would do the work now but it’s better done by hand..I am excited to think that you are considering a cookbook….keep us posted..please..wishing you both the best. I love your channel and easy to understand recipes…
We were very poor; my mother made homemade bread regularly. We rarely had store bread except occassionally a loaf of pumpernickle from a Jewish small deli in our neighborhood. Us kids loved mom's white bread and would vie for the heel of warm bread. I would stay indoors once the bread went into the oven; my insight on beating out my brothers for the heel piece.
Tom should really make a cookbook! I would buy one immediately!
Love those bread pans! Can't wait for the new Sunday series. My mother used to make a bread she called Amish bread, but it was more of a dessert bread. Since she went home just shy of a month ago, I was hoping it might be that, but this was great too. I hope the two of you realize just how appreciated your videos are and the two of you are. Thank you!
I think what you're looking for is Friendship Bread...usually has a "starter"
@@douglasgunnoe7465 Yes, I think that is the correct full name. Thanks! I think she just cut it off and called it Amish bread. She liked to experiment with different flavors, and then she liked to take warm loaves to office where family worked for them to enjoy.
Growing up we also called it Amish bread...just ended up two different breads in today's post....Stay Hungry My Friends
Love you guys but as I said before too much work for me!
@@mikiweaver3558 Not required to make the stuff. I don’t cook, so I’ll probably never make anything from this channel. That’s not why I watch. I do it because I really enjoy how they do their videos.
Easy Peasy Recipe. Many Thnx for Sharing, Really. Holly from Sydney, Australia 🇦🇺 ❤️ 😍 ♥️ 💕 💖 🇦🇺 😊😊😊🎉🎉🎉😂😂😂❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Yeast in water reminds me of ice cream foam on a root beer float. That wonderful tool is a Danish dough whisk or just a dough whisk. I love it.
I was thinking a coke float 😂
I buy my yeast from Costco or Sam’s, big bag keep in the freezer it won’t go bad that way. I use bread flour too King Arthur always. ❤
I have 5 flours right now in my kitchen. I use bread flour in my chocolate chip cookies. Great recipe and they don’t get stale quickly like most other recipes.
I bought a large amount of yeast as soon as it was restocked during the pandemic. I still have one pound in the freezer-- I have wondered if it was still good. Should try some. Here in the country I've been told to pour yeast down the toilet that it helps the septic tank -- need to look that one up.
I get mine from King Arthur, comes in a brick size that I empty into a container then place it in the freezer.
It can go bad if the expiration date is past. I had a friend that this happened to. If the ex date is close or past be sure to proof first.
@@markbastings4451This came in a brick which hasn't been opened - - always been in the freezer -- hope it is still good. I proof first no matter what.
When you grabbed the Tupperware bowl & told how it was your Mom's it made me smile! I use the same bowl, I have one I bought but I also have another one that was my Grandma's. The white bread recipe I still make was the one Grams & Momma used. I've been making it since I had to stand on a chair & Momma stood behind me with her hands guiding mine, around 55 years or so. While we waited for the yeast to proof it was the time we went to make Momma & Daddy's bed. Talk about habit, for the first several years after I got married I would intentionally not make my bed right after getting up on bread making day so I could make it while the yeast proofed! I can't cook or bake the way I always have anymore, my legs just won't cooperate with my desire/habit. But thank the Lord, bread is one of things I can still do, thanks to being able to sit while it raises. I do agree that the smell of bread baking is mouth watering. The only thing that smells as good is when I bake hard salami. It bakes for 6 hours but after about 20 minutes my mouth is watering. It sure does make for a long day!
Thank you for the wonderful memories you brought to mind with the conversation in this video! Have a blessed week. ❤
@debgalloway1398 I would sure like to learn how to make hard salami! Can you share your recipe?.
@@cathylongstreth5405 I'd be happy to! It is a 3 day process but well worth the wait! It makes a great addition to holiday goodies and when wrapped tightly freezes well. My Aunt Barbara taught me how to make it, hence the name.
Aunt Barbara’s Smoked Hard Salami
5 pounds hamburger
5 Tablespoons curing salt
1 ½ teaspoons liquid hickory smoke
2 ½ teaspoons garlic powder
2 ½ teaspoons mustard seed
½ teaspoon dried red pepper flakes
1 teaspoon black pepper
Mix well in a large bowl, seal & refrigerate for 24 hours.
Mix/knead thoroughly, seal & refrigerate another 24 hours.
Mix again and divide into 3 even balls. Use waxed paper, parchment or foil and shape each ball into a log. As you work it into a log squeeze along the length to try to work any air pockets out. Once it feels even use your paper to roll into a round log.
Repeat the process with the other 2 balls.
Place on pan with rack, I use my broiler pan.
Bake at 200 degrees for 6 hours, turning rolls after 3 hours.
After cooling, store wrapped in foil in the refrigerator.
DEB’S HINTS:
I love to use venison for this but have to use at least 3 pounds of pork sausage to 2 pounds of the venison. Likewise, this is one time I do not use lean hamburger, it needs the fat to bake well.
You always want to use disposable gloves to handle this. Not only is it impossible to get the liquid smoke to wash off your hands but any tiny little cut on your hand-Ouch!
When you are working your rolls into logs it takes time to squeeze the rolls out. The more you do it the better feel you get for knowing there aren’t air pockets. In the end, it really makes no difference in the taste as all! When I was learning & found holes when slicing it, Aunt Barbara had the best solution…those were the pieces you had to eat so no one would see them! The way I gauge how long to make my rolls I eyeball the length of my pan. We often bought the little loaves of bread to make mini sandwiches, the Party Entertainers or Pepperidge Farms loaves. We always thought the pumpernickel/rye tasted great.
Enjoy!!!
I keep my yeast in the freezer. So it’s still good after the expiration date. Also I leave some in the refrigerator and it’s still good passed the expiration date. Thank you for sharing. The Lord willing I’ll make some tomorrow.
I swear my bench scrapper runs away from home every time I need it. It was so good to see that someone else's draw looks like mine.
I’m laughing at your yellow Tupperware Bowl because I have one just like it. I have had it for at least 30 years. I have some cast iron bread pans that are my pride and joy for baking bread. Sure enjoy watching you cook and your wife’s wonderful ability to do the wonderful videos.
I'm 71 years young and have for the first time in my life started making bread. Thank you for posting this simple recipe. Delish!!
I can’t watch it right now, but I’ve got it ready to watch when I get home. Thank you.
I wasn't sure (still not sure) if your recipe was any better than any other but you make it so interesting and fun that I'm not going to look for another recipe. I'll use the mixer for the entire job. I'm 77 years old and have been making my own bread for ever so long, but now I have problems with the kneading, so I've been looking for a good recipe using the mixer, I'm not giving up my home made bread. Thank you for the recipe and by the way, I sure like your pretty loaf pans! God bless, and have a great day!
My daily dose of Tom and Melissa , I love you guys, thank you for your down home feel you put into your teachings , in a World that seems Crazy, it's nice to have place to escape to and chill for awhile. Please don't ever stop making these videos. God Bless
High five on that one!😊
You definitely are a teacher. Organized, explaining each step. I make bread 2-3 times a week plus homemade biscuits and rolls. I use a bread machine just for mixing and kneading.
Me too. I have arthritis in my back and shoulders, so hand kneading is out for me.
I miss middle age! 😂
@@LauraMacMillan-el2kcI’m developing arthritis in my hands, so I get it. Thank goodness for my kitchen aid mixer! I still make bread or bagels every week.
I know several people that have started making their own sourdough bread, including my son. With the cost of groceries, making some of our own food makes sense. You have inspired me to bake some fresh bread, thank you.
Me also. Bread is so much, and not that tasty. 🍞
I have watched a dozen of these bread videos. Your presentation is the clearest and best of all of them. Thanks
Tom, you must have been a good teacher, because of the way you explain things.
You're a mind reader...
I was looking over there last night for a homemade bread recipe...
Amazing...
love the name.come sit at my table, a meager supply you might find, but oh it's not what you see that makes me a king, makes me a king it's treasures unseen!! Love your recipes too!
That was one of my most favorite things in the world when my mother would bake bread from scratch like that. The kitchen would smell so good and she also would slice some for us while it was still a little warm and OMG that was sooooo good!
You are so very kind to go step by step for all of your video’s.
I have been watching your channel from western WV for a while now. I have tried several of your recipes which all turned out great. I am glad to see you got your silver award. Great work you two. ❤
Y'all may not be professionals but you sure are fun to be with and I always learn some helpful hints that I never knew before. Like today it was actually measuring the yeast rather than trusting those little packets of yeast. Love homemade bread 🍞 😋 ❤
I love my bread machine. dump all in and turn it on. 30 mins later I have dough . I make dough for my pepperoni rolls all my grandkids love them.
Agreed!!! The heel is the best especially with real butter and warm out of the oven!!!!!! God bless and prayers from Missouri!!
It's hard to beat fresh baked bread! Thanks so much for watching. We really do appreciate it.
That looks perfect. I watched a mennonite video and she said to put a damp towel on top to let it rise, she said it helps to let it raise. Thank you.
I’m in! My baby is 3 months & im finally starting to work out again. This was a great start 🙌🏼
I have been baking bread for 40 plus years and I do not put sugar in my bread because I do not care for sweet tasting bread and I do not use any oil. I use lecithin instead of the oil which will give you a very nice chewy textured bread and I also only use fine kosher salt as it will not alter the taste of your bread. It is more accurate to weight your flour and not using cup measurements and you can never go exactly by what the recipe says when it comes to the amount of water to flour ratio because your flour hydration will depend on the weather, if it rains you will need less but if you live in the desert you will need more, it is all about how your dough feels in your hands which will be easy to gauge if you bake a lot of bread. I personally do not use a mixer because I have more control of how my dough feels when I knead by hand besides I enjoy it, I also knead the dough for 10 to 15 minutes to develop good gluten strands. You get the best loafs of bread by using a high protein flour like King Arthur Bread Flour which will make a big difference in how the bread turns out.
Maybe you need a RUclips channel yourself?
@@barbaracook4735 Oh no thanks, that I would never do but because it’s not my thing, I just watch others, but thank you for the suggestion, it’s appreciated.

I made this today and I swear, freezing the second loaf is not an option because the entire first loaf is already gone!! Thank you for sharing ❤
I love bread. Growing up my Dad made it every now & then. It was always a treat. It took a very long time because of the raising. About 1 or 2:00 am, warm bread, smothered with butter... WONDERFUL memories. Thank you.
I am making this today-3/16/24. Told the granddaughter about your channel and the bread recipe, she is a new mom so she is at home all day. Now she is into making things, thanks for sharing.

This is the standard bread recipe that all Amish women in Lancaster County, Pa.use and often add their own touches. The taste and texture are similar across the board. Non Amish locals buy it from them and love it. Gut Esse!

What cogent human being does not want a warm piece of bread with a lot of butter!?!?!
We kids were always so quick to eat the warm bread, there was never any time to get to the toast stage, but that toast is really something special ... we used to bake this bread after I received the recipe from our home Ec teacher in 1964.
If I remember correctly, mother used that bread recipe for her cinnamon rolls ... EXCEPTIONAL!
