I watch you and I think you don’t give yourself enough credit. You had big things happen to you, you lived through a hurricane. Moved out of your home didn’t have a sewing machine. You also moved into a new home and set up a beautiful sewing room. Five out of nine is pretty good under those circumstances.
Thank you for explaining the I cards. I have never clicked on one because I didn't want to interrupt my current watch. I don't do a make nine . I pattern test and end up making many more designs that I wouldn't have tried on my own but really enjoy wearing. Thanks for your videos. You had some great makes in 2023.
Really enjoyed your round up. I have only been sewing for 3 years ( this time around - had a 38 year break) so have never done much formal planning as such. Last year I set out to master sewing with knit fabrics and improving a few skills e.g get better at invisible zips. I have achieved that but it sort of happened organically. I think my approach is more seasonal i.e. to consider Co-ordinating garments to match my lifestyle (retired) whilst upskilling and trying new things. My early focus for 2024 is mastering welt pockets and really good tailored trousers as well as venturing into a teeny bit of quilting and crafting because I already have a LOT of clothes!! 😊 Lynne
I'm 3 years in after a 25 year break - so our stories are similar 😀. Good luck with your welt pocket goal - that's a fun one! Thanks for sharing Lynne!
Hi Michelle. I would count your Make Nine challenge a big success. By focusing on tops and having a whole range of patterns, you have honed exactly what you like and is your style. Plus all of your makes that fit your criteria look fantastic on you. In 2023 I did my first Make 9. I had way too many ideas and multiple fabrics for each make. I did 6 of the 9 items. All of them required pattern alterations for fit. There was one fail -- the Rhapsody blouse. Even though everyone seems to love that pattern, it's awful for me. So for the five successes, I now have two turtlenecks, two raglan tunic fleeces, one self-drafted flannel shirt, one pair of corduroy stretch pants with yoga waistband, and one pair of wool overalls. I'm not sure if I'm doing the challenge this year. Your ice dyed garments are beautiful. I'm hoping the new year has lots of happiness for you and more of your glorious ice dying, Antonia
Hi Antonia! Wow, you had a very successful Make Nine this year - kudos to you! I made the Rhapsody once. It was ok, but it's not my holy grail like it seems to be for lots of people. I'll probably make it again some day because I think the reason I didn't love it was my fabric choice. Even so, the style was ....ok. You have so many new great garments - how awesome! Happy New Year to you and all your loved ones!!
Looks like a you have a good collection of patterns for work/life tops to go back to, when needed. I started 2023 thinking I needed dresses in my wardrobe and thought I would focus on that. I worked really hard to fit one and nailed it….but I hated the dress on me. 🤣😅😂 It was disappointing and I lost motivation to tackle dresses, but I learned a lot. I went back to tops, because it’s less pattern & fabric to work with as I’m honing my fitting skills. I, also, reorganized my closet and found I didn’t NEED the dresses as much as I wanted them, so I’ll get there when the time is right. In the mean time, I’m enjoying the things I did manage to accomplish, last year. Always fun to see you! 😊-Deborah
Hi Deborah! Yes, I do have a good collection of patterns that I know I like/love - that's a good spot to be in! I also WANT dresses but don't really need them. Although they are much more comfortable to wear in the summer here! I'm glad to see you enjoyed your sewing year! I hope this year is just as fab 😍
you got a bunch of new tops to wear which you needed for work, so i think your make 9 was a big success! i think more people are realizing that the challenge doesn't work for them, which is ok. i feel like seasonal planning makes more sense for me and allows me to be more flexible with what i need. but to each their own!
I think editing the Make Nine list and eliminating items due to style is very reasonable! You had a phenomenal year; well done!!! I finished six quilts, at least two of which were double-bed ones!
Wanted to let you know that RUclips unsubscribed me from your channel. I have since resubscribed as I really enjoy your channel and love watching you. Your blouse looked fantastic on you, great color!! I wanted to shout out Stephanie Farrell Focus for saying RUclips had unsubscribed some of her subscribers.
I bought fabric to make 3 outfits, made a jumper from my stash, made some clothes for grandkids from stash fabric, and cut out 1 of the fabrics I had purchased.... So I spent the holiday months with COVID
Great run down of your make 9 and to be honest I'm glad you aren't making a list for this year. You did over 50% and got yourself some lovely tops. You did have a lot going on last year so be proud of anything you managed to achieve in your sewing room. Keep yourself a free spirit and just sew what you fancy when you like! I had no idea about the I card 😂, I thought it took you straight to the video 😂. Thanks for sharing ❤xx
Thanks Carole! I am definitely going to stay a free spirit this year ...and that's funny about the i card, I only learned that recently as well, so I. though I'd share!
I really like to see reflections on sewing plans. Sometimes we just change our minds, some other project comes along or a project that seemed perfect after a while does not. I struggle to complete any plans I make to :D I wonder if I should stop making plans entirely. I only made 3 from my make 9 (2.5 to be honest...the last one I did not like and did not even finnish 😅).
As long as you don't beat yourself when you decide to change direction, I don't think there's anything wrong with making plans😍. But do what feels right for you!!
I did make a list at the beginning of 2023, which was a great way to review and focus on what I wanted to make. Gotta say, I only made about 5 that were on the list, but I made around 20 items throughout the year, obviously many of them not on the list. Some were not for me, some were gifts, some were non wearable makes, like bags, apron etc.. and I'm like you, I'm not doing a make nine this year, but instead am going to do a Review and Focus instead,,if that makes sense. Great vlog from you as always. Keep smiling ❤❤
I love everything that you have made, and I would say 5/9 is a big success. In 2022, I decided to participate in make 9 and didn't make 1 item from my list! I skipped last year due to moving home and not having a sewing space for several months. Plus, I didn't like my body shape and didn't love myself enough to sew for myself. I have my sewing room now, and although I'm not completely happy with my body, I am trying to make the best of myself, so I am trying again with the make 9! My make 9 isn't just garments though. I've included a purse, a bag, a quilt, and some knitting as well as garments. I'm hopeful that I'll have a better success rate this year although I have just started a dress that isn't on the make 9 🥴🤔 I have seen several people who instead of choosing 9 items they choose 9 fabrics to make up, maybe that would be a better option for us for future years? Happy New Year to you and your family. I hope it's a fabulous one ❤
Hi Julie! I completely understand your reasons for not wanting to sew for yourself. That's the frame of mind I'm in right now. I think we're too hard on ourselves, for sure. But it's difficult to get through it. I know we will! I think you are smart to put other items on your Make Nine! Even if you get 1 thing completed, it's a better success rate, right? 😊. I have seen lots of differrent types of Make Nine lists. If you watch Izzy from Dizzy Quilts and Sews, she's put nine new sewing techniques as her list. I thought that was a good one too! Happy New Year!! 💕
I was wondering how you did on your make nine. It seemed like at the beginning of the year you were checking them off pretty quickly. I think you were very successful. I don't do make nine. I tend to sew month to month. I cut out a whole bunch of things for the grandkids and myself and then try to get them sewed up that month. Some months I'm more successful than others. I love the top you are wearing. The color is beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
Great success on your make 9. You found new tops you like and learned what you didn't enjoy. Thats a plus in sewing. You now know more about yourself than you did before.💜💜💜
Loved your made tops, Michelle! No make 9 for me. I’m working on undies for my daughter right now, then on to a few sweaters. 2024 will be the year I sew mostly for myself instead of others and I need trousers!
No make nine for me as I want my sewing to be spontaneous and fun. I do have some projects listed on Stash Hub but no mandatories for me when it comes to my hobby.:). I thought your Betty tops and Norma was particularly pretty. xx Karen
Thanks Karen! WHEN I have plans, I don't make them mandatory. I find it helpful to have sometimes when I'm in a rut 🤷♀️ But I'm also a spontaneous sewist 😊
I love your style. I like the tops you made but agree about the ruffle collar one. It's too "busy" for my style. I do think sewists go thru an evolution in matching our style to our makes. Especially since social media has been in our lives. I used to make some of the most "anti me" garments! 😅 Issy Miyake dresses with 48 pieces, blazers using couture techniques, Vogue designer garments you could wear literally nowhere. 😅 I once made a wool coat lined with wool, and I lived in L.A. at the time. 😮🤷♂️😂🤔 My wardrobe is so basic now. I'm like you - I prefer wovens. If I need a knit tee, I get a womens Hanes on Amazon. You did a "Make 43" and that's not anything to sneeze at. ❤ I'm a big Style Arc fan as well. Many modern styles with simple basic lines. Great video.
BUSY - that's a good word (although I do love a good busy print 🤣). OMG you had me laughing out loud at all the "anti you" makes you made! That is EXACTLY what I've been doing the last few years. Trying to keep up with all the fabulous things I see on Instagram but have absolutely NO use for in my life! Thanks Meg - I appreciate your insight 😊
I wonder if making a high contrast color blocking garment are the ones you don't like? I have a wide body side to side and a large bust. I figured out high color blocking chops up my body and I feel as if I look bigger than I am. I lost my sewjo after making two items in a row that didn't fit. Hope to get it back soon. In the mean time I am making quilts, they always fit.
Maybe - definitely something to look into! I appreciate that insight Ada! I think the same thing happened to me - after several tries at wrap dress patterns, I kind of lost the desire to put time into making things for myself. We'll get it back, I have NO doubt 😊. Enjoy your quilt making!!

Good for you! I think it's good to have an outline. Even if you choose to go in a different direction at some point - it will help keep you on track! I've made the Simplicity 8172. @@MichelleSewsAgain I remember that video! Beautiful. I love that pattern. I've made it as gifts a couple of times too.
