  • Watch this Allen's Hummingbird Nest where you can see exclusive live footage of the mother bird keeping the eggs warm until the babies hatch and learn to fly. The nest is located in Thousand Oaks California, where this little hummingbird built her nest on a string of Christmas tree lights. Watch this little miracle of nature unfold before your eyes!
She built a nest and laid an egg before we were even set up to go live! We did capture some video and you can see her laying her first egg.
We went live and Hummingbird Spot’s community joined her in this adventure. We watched her fixing the nest and we anxiously waited for her to lay the second egg. Hummingbirds usually lay their second egg a day or two later. We thought we were seeing some movements of her trying to lay a second egg the morning after the first one was laid. But she flew away in about 30 minutes and there was still only one egg in the nest.
Hummingbirds have been known to go even four days between laying the first and second egg and still have a successful clutch. So we watched and waited. The mother hummingbird came and checked the first egg, but her visits became less and less frequent over the following days and the nest became inactive. We stopped streaming.
A couple of days later, Alik noticed that a nest was being built in the same location where Opal and Jade successfully fledged last year. And it’s the same hummingbird that built the first nest with only one egg.
Our little hummingbird probably had a negative reaction to the nest where she could only produce one egg, so she started tearing it down and rebuilding in a new location.
Almost without exception, hummingbirds lay two eggs. Having two fledglings in the nest gives the best chance that one will survive. If she lays only one egg and the bird doesn’t survive, all the energy the mother put into building the nest, laying and incubating the egg and feeding the chick will be lost. So a mother hummingbird generally will not sit and incubate one egg.
Fifteen days after that first egg was laid, she laid an egg in her new nest. She continued fortifying her new nest with material from her first nest the rest of the day and the next. Then very early in the second morning after her first egg was laid, she successfully produced the second egg. Congratulations little mother, we can’t wait to see your baby hummingbirds around the 23rd of February!

Thank you for this cheerful post. I look forward to seeing those babies!
I may have some “nests-in-development” in one of my tall bougainvilleas in the backyard. I might get on a ladder to take a peek later in the month. I should probably invite my sister so she can call 9-1-1 if I fall!
At an rate, thanks to a feeder & lots of yummy flowers, I have Allen’s, Rufous, and other hummingbirds visiting my backyard depending on the season. The Allen’s seem to be permanent residents here. One of the female Allen’s comes out from the bushes every time I step in my backyard. It seems she wants to remind me it’s actually HER backyard!

My Allen's Hummingbird mama always lays eggs in her permanent nest on a large potted cactus under a two-story front entrance covering. Last few clutches, only one egg seems to be fertile and we only get one baby hummer. Is that common? Maybe our male hummers swooping and diving and whistling aren't up to the task?! She still takes care of the single chick, thank goodness, though a single chick never seems as happy as having a companion. Most fascinating thing in the world, watching the hummer life cycle out of my home office window.

I saw what happened to her eggs. Heartbreaking. Don’t give up little one. Keep trying, and you will prevail over the harsher aspects of nature.

WOOHOOO!! Exciting times ahead! Our hummers must nest elsewhere, because we've not been lucky enough to have one within our view. They fly into the trees after they feed. As long as they're safe from all of the cats around here, we're ok with that!
