So glad this splendid house has been preserved instead of being demolished or converted to condos!
while I love this house, it does not look like it has been or is being preserved. It needs a complete restoration.
I lived in Seaview/Carey Mansion in the summers of 1993 and 1994. I was attending Salve Regina University at the time. It was a bit scary living in this massive old mansion with all its doors and creepy noises 😳 but I loved it!
Was it beautiful?
Why did the school sell it?
That's the year I believe that summer was co-ed. I was living in my dorm in the singles wing. Room 219. All the way down at the end of the hall on the right near the fire escape. Lived there from 1991 to 1994 until I graduated. That summer I was working in the kitchen for Sodexho. That was my summer job that year. And you got to stay on campus in your room free of charge!!
Thankyou for the history of the place. It is beautiful. 😊
This is the Dark Shadows house.
I grew up watching DARK SHADOWS, so this was a nice piece of history about Collinwood. Thanks. Great work.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Dark Shadows the TV show is on RUclips.
Yes, I had no idea it was a real place! Great show...used to run home from school to catch it.
@@philipgermani1616 Me too! Loved those secret passageways and vampires.
I’m a new and obsessed DS fan. So glad for your comment. 🙏
Thank you, Ken! I was yet another of the kids who watched "Dark Shadows" after school and I think Collinwood Manor/Seaview Terrace was the first house in which I became interested. I drew A LOT as a child and I drew mansions based on Collinwood and before I knew it was a real house. I would say that "Dark Shadows" and Seaview Terrace led me into an interest in houses and architecture and architectural history. I also became interested in the people who lived in such houses. (There's actually a word for the study of the rich: plutology.) Along with being interested in social history I became interested in social class issues and sociology. I've never been to Seaview Terrace or even seen it in real life, but the house, even if indirectly, has been of much importance in my life.
I’m another Dark Shadows fan. Like you I ran home every afternoon to watch the show. Even my mom who hated soap operas was a huge fan. I drew the Old House over and over. The furniture in the Old House plus the 1796 costumes inspired me to learn more about the architecture, furniture styles and clothing history of DS. All of these years later I still enjoy learning more about these subjects. BTW who was your favorite DS character? I had a mad crush on Barnabas Collins and somehow intuited that he was not an evil person long before his backstory was revealed. Happy memories!
@@monicacall7532 Monica, I think that Barnabas was everyone's favorite.
There was no DS without him.
I loved spooky Collinwood on Dark Shadows! It's funny that on the show, Collinwood was built in the 1795 plotline and the actual house was built in the 1920s, just 40 years before the series aired. You should do The Old House from Dark Shadows, a fine Palladian mansion in itself.
The Old House at Collinwood was on the Lyndhurst estate in New York. Sadly that house was destroyed in a fire.
@@andrewbrendan1579 Yes, I remember reading that, somewhere. I loved that house and was sad to hear that. When I was a child, I made a cardboard model of The Old House and would pretend to live there.
Loved Dark Shadows. RIP Jonathan Frid.
Barnabas Collins was my idol. Even as an 8 year old I figured out early on that he wasn’t evil just after his debut on DS. When my son was about 7 I had trouble getting him up for school until I discovered that SCIFY showed two back to back episodes at 6:30 and 7:00 a.m. I introduced him to the 1796 Collins family characters and never had to worry about getting my son up on time again. We’d watch DS while eating breakfast. Jonathan Frid was such an excellent actor.
Thank you for this video. I was a Music Major at Salve Regina about 20 years ago (2000 - 2004), when this building was rented from the Carey Family to be both the Music Department and a dorm for SRU. I spent the majority of my time in these spaces, with much of the original furniture and decor from those old photos. So nice to see it all again.
What a beautiful mansion. Thanks for posting this video, Ken.
Was in Newport two years ago and found this estate. Had to crawl through a thick hedgerow just to manage a few typical tourist type pictures. It didn't look very well kept after
Love that this beautiful building has survived. So many lost to rising expense and ended up being nondescript subdivisions.
Shadows of the past calling us back to the past. In this world, GREAT home are often gone 😢, but somehow it's good to know this house lives on and on! 😉 EVEN in Dark Shadows! Vampire 🧛♀️
Another fun fact, Seaview Terrace was also the intro backdrop for the original Where are you? Scooby Doo series.
So glad it’s still standing tall & whole.
That's amazing they relocated that whole mansion several states. Truly a labor of love.
Great video, Dark Shadows brought me here but I also love Seaview Terrace it's a beautiful building and it was great to learn more about its history. Thank-You!
This story, like the others featured on this channel is a testament to the greatness of the human mind and the power of one’s will. Thank you for the inspiration ❗️
I lived there in the summers of 82 and 83 for the Americas Cup. We had a lot of fun in that house but it had been "sailed hard and put away wet"... talk about needing TLC!
Relieved to to hear it is STILL being used and not meeting and not falling into disrepair and abandonment as is the case for far to many others that have craftsmanship that won’t be duplicated
Don't forget Salve Regina used it for a short time in the early 2000's as dorms and bastardized the interior to be code compliant.
Ah, Dark Shadows - a most EXCELLENT Soap - a safe sense of melancholy to be back home at Collinwood! Thanks for the Memories!
As I love old mansions...of course I love this one!!!. Thanksfully it was not destroy. This mansion resembles a French chateau. I know it. I am from France. Sorry my poor english. Wonderful video and story!!!!.
What a gorgeous Mansion, I hope it is still lived in and loved today!
As mentioned after the Aladdin's Palace video: the whole D.C. mansion was disassembled and moved to Newport where it was attached to the existing mansion Sea-View - not just the interiors. This is also what is listed online in descriptions of Seaview Terrace.
"Many of the rooms that had been imported intact from France and installed in Washington, D.C. twenty years later were moved again and reassembled in Newport, and a new building was constructed around them. When the interiors were completed in 1925, there were 17 rooms on the first floor, 25 on the second, and 12 on the third. It is believed to have been one of the largest buildings to be moved in this manner." - Vestiges of "Sea View"
The only exterior that portion that we could find that was moved from DC to Newport was the turret.
A truly massive undertaking. The abandoned shell of "Aladdin's Palace" sat until 1931 when it was demolished for the Dupont Circle Building to be built. - Dalton(the editor)
@@ThisHouse Thanks. There are SO many people who believe the whole structure was moved
At 1:18 I lived in Fairlawn on of the cottages behind Seaview. It was housing for Salve Regina College back in 1991. At that time, Searches was called Carey Mansion. It was used both ad the boys dormitory and the Music Hall. I went to many concerts there.
This is one of the most beautiful mansion interiors, it’s really unfortunate it’s uninhabited and languishing in obscurity.
If I had the funds, I’d buy it in a heartbeat!
Did you watch the whole video? It said that since 2009 the house has been used as a private residence, and sometimes used as a site for filming--neither uninhabited nor languishing.
@@jamesclendon4811
What the video didn’t mention is that the Carey’s have passed away and they left it to their daughter who doesn’t live on the property. The property has been more or less abandoned for the past three years.
The mansion has been for sale since late 2021 and from the looks of the photos, it’s not in great shape. Only the foyer, great room, music room, first floor hall, and entrance hall have been maintained and the listing indicates serious renovations are required to bring it back as a residence.
The Carey’s other gilded age mansion Winfield is also for sale. Since the massive fire that destroyed the interior of Winfield, the Carey’s have also put it up for auction but it didn’t sell.
@@henrylivingstone2971 Well I guess now I know. Peace.
I believe it sold recently for 29 million to a private owner.
@@MC-342
To my knowledge I believe it is still for sale, I don’t think it’s been sold yet
I cant even fathom being this ridiculously rich!!! The Gilded Age was something else
OA I’ve got the theme to Dark Shadows running through my head!
Me too. That and the opening intro usually spoken by Victoria Winters.
I remember Dark Shadows ... very camp.🤠
Great history on this mansion. Too bad he didn’t keep his ownership of the whiskey business. I watched Dark Shadows in the 60’s as well so it’s great to hear how this home was connected.
Thank you for sharing!
Whatever it takes for these treasures to survive, helps the legend of them , even if it’s a checkered one.
I lived here from 1991 to 1994 when I graduated from Salve Regina University. It was an amazing experience living here at Carey Mansion. One experience the new generation of students will never be able to experience.
Been to this gorgeous behemoth …… in person is WOW!
You are so good at this. The houses you show are beautiful, from a different time.
Very interesting story! I love the castle look.
Wow I had no idea thank you for the 411😮😮😮. Have a blessed day
I believe the house recently sold for 29 million to a private owner. It was listed on zillow( pending sale ) and then removed and listed as sold.
Gotta love the government taxing people out of them and their families stuff...
Recognized it right away. Thanks for the history! I loved Dark Shadows.
I love all this with the beautiful pictures thank you.
Very interesting. Thank you for sharing this with us 👌
What a grand & opulent estate with a fascinating history!!! Thanks for sharing this interesting video!!! 👍👍🙂
OMG what a beautiful place I’m so glad that it is still standing and they haven’t turn it down like they have so much of early americana homes and mansions it is definitely a beautiful place a boarding school would be a great idea to have it right now or a private school. For education of course. I remember dark shadows but I don’t remember this particular castle being in the show. Thank you again excellent video and commentary
Having examined so many incredible estates, each with their own uniqueness (architecturally),… I would absolutely love to see a video on YOUR favourite mansion and most importantly, why.
Your videos have consistently nailed all these small unique details that often get overlooked, all whilst wrapping them up in an absolutely perfect amount of time. Far too many videos lose attention due to the creator’s length. It really comes down to editing and the ‘economy of words’… which you do very well. Keep up the great work.
Thank you again for another informative, entertaining and well done video.
Collinwood! I’m instantly transported back to my childhood when I ate, slept and drank “Dark Shadows” starting in 2nd grade. Could you find the mansion that served as Barnabas Collins’ home “The Old House” (if it still exists) and do a video on it? Bless you for making my day. I do so enjoy your videos!
The Old House in DS was actually a real house. How are it burned and nothing of it is left, so I am told.
Fred, I’m so sad to hear that news about the Old House. I always liked it better than Collinwood but that might be because I had such a crush on Barnabas!
[Eerie music] “My name is Victoria Winters . . .” Oh, those afternoons of watching Dark Shadows after school in the late ‘60s!
Beautiful mansion. I loved to see the exterior on Dark Shadows. I love that its a private residence
I literally just asked for this video!!! Amazing!!!!!!!
Thanks for the history of this gem. 🦇
Excellent video!!! Very well done.
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching.
Very nice job, thank you so much.
Love to tour the lovely home.
I would assume this house would be very dark inside but the amount of beautiful light is wonderful.
It never ceases to amaze me that the New Money people would dump such enormous sums into a building with no plan in place for taxes or maintenance, or what would happen after their demise. I wonder if they simply thought they’d live forever?
There were no income taxes at the time and banks were not guaranteed by the govt... thats why they built these monstrosities
I can't imagine how optimistic they must have been to build such huge buildings just to live in.
New Money ppl do not understand money as a tool. Thus when you do not know how to a tool correctly, the benefits of the tool are lost.
Also, quite a few of these ppl are like lottery winners and spend like they have never seen money in their lives.
perhaps they hoped that their children or other fam members would take on their passion for the home
Why would they care what happens to it after they die? They build the house for their use when they're alive, not for an investment for their kids.
Well now that was very interesting honey, keep up the great work and thank you for sharing that wonderful wonderful!
My favorite estate in Newport, RI. I spent many wonderful fall and winter’s exploring the grounds with my Doberman Ramses the Great. Was this once a private girls school name Burnleigh-Stoneham
By The Sea?
I love the French Normandy style. I just wonder how a little brick, slate roof and exposed beam and shingle could be incorporated. A harmonious mix would be the perfect design for me!
During NY Governor Carey’s ownership of Seaview Terrace, it was rented out to Salve Regina University as a mixed use building, including dormitory and music department home, during the 80s and 90s.
Gov. Hugh Carey didn't own this - it was his brother Martin Carey.
Haha great choice! I like the house, felt very familiar.
Been to Seaview, was fortunate to be allowed to walk the outer perimeter grounds and exterior. Such a massive and grand estate. I hope it is preserved forever. Visitor note: Take a walk along the Cliff Walk path. Its where Dan Curtis filmed the opening DS intro of the waves breaking on the rocks. It also brings you past several other magnificent mansions. While Seaview is just a 1/4 mile from the Cliff Walk, The estate is private property so please respect that or you will be 'escorted' off the grounds if caught .
At least it is still here.beatiful.
Very interesting thank you
You should do an episode on Stan Hywet hall in Akron Ohio
Fantastic. 🦇
Love thanks
If you have not done so, how about covering the home of Doris Duke on Bellevue Avenue in Newport, RI and the mysteries surrounding it as well as her live Camels.
You are showing the outside of the original house ,but the inside of the house from the movies!
These mansions are fine, but I would like to see Floor Plans (printable if possible), to get a better feel and understanding of the structures.
if you search the net you can find the floor plans and the floor plans are actually terrible, especially for today's way of life. I just thought the floor plans were terrible, and the whole house, while I'm in love with it, (more the outside of it) of course, it would really have to be re-configured, etc.....jmo though.
My friends and I went thru here 20-odd years ago and we recorded the experience. To the naked eye, it was beautiful but falling apart, with noises. On the TAPE there were things moving all around us. The cone part had a bunch of activity in it. It was scary I don't know if the girl still has the tape cause the news spread quickly and everyone wanted to see it.
I wonder what the interior looks like now, and how much of the original exists!
"My name is Victoria Wiinters, and I have recently arrived in Collinsport.
One of my favorite lines is after Angelique who has been dead for six months but without decay comes back to life in her coffin and says to her twin sister Alexis who said the body must be destroyed, "....someone must be destroyed, but it won't be me. It will be you". Then when Angelique has taken Alexis's place she says to Quentin, "Angeliques body must be destroyed...and the sooner the better". That scene is on You Tube along with many other "Dark Shadows" videos.
Happy memories!
Dark Shadows rocked.
I was thrilled at thirteen years of age with that incredibly stupid and terribly campy Dark Shadows, but I love good architecture!
This stately abode should be featured on MTV's 'Cribs'.
I love your channel format, but I loved the old format too. Do you have a second channel I don’t know about? If not, please consider starting a second channel with walk-throughs of historic house listings.
50th wedding anniversary, thank god love survives in one of these homes, wow!❤❤🤍🤍❤❤🤍🤍❤❤🤍🤍❤❤🤍🤍❤❤🤍🤍❣❣💕💕💞💞💓💓💖💖💘💘💝💝💟💟
O my summer home! Where have the flowers gone?
This was scene on dark shadows on tv I ran home from school to watch the last 15 mins,
Why no mention that the Careys leased it out to Salve Regina for decades?
More than one home was used as the backdrop for Dark Shadows. Before Barnabas came on the show the series ran for 2 or 3 years as just a soap. Many of the same stars were in both segments.
@jeanbaker2087: Actually, there was the house in this video - which served as the exterior of the "Great House at Collinwood." Then there was another house - located on the property of the Lyndhurst Estate, in Tarrytown, New York - which served as the exterior of "The Old House." Unfortunately, that "The Old House" house was destroyed by a fire.
No, it was sooner than that. The character of "Barnabas Collins" was introduced in Episode 210 ( painting on the wall, hand coming out of a coffin; ) then ACTUALLY first seen near the end of Episode 211. That was about 3/4 of the way through the first ( 1st ) year.
Yes, many of the stars of the pre- "Barnabas" episodes continued their roles after his introduction. Then new characters were introduced, played by new actors. But, then - time travel was introduced and the previous actors, older or more recent, played DIFFERENT, although look-alike roles ( most notably in the 1795 time travel episodes. )
50th wedding anniversary? Seems a little late in life to build a mansion. I guess I am not rich so I do not understand their ways. I like the exterior but the interior was too Gothic and dark for my taste. However, I think it is great that film companies rent these old mansions for films. I think it really helps the current owners with finances and keep the history alive for others to enjoy.
I also thought building something like this for a 50th anniversary was a tad over-optimistic.
The interior of Seaview Terrace looks very different from the interior of Collinwood on Dark Shadows.
You know Barnabus Collins be in there somewhere 🤣
House establishing hott- Collinwood
I like everything except the moose heads and the rug made from a murdered tiger.
I know this house. It’s Collinwood.
Seaview terrace is for sale for 29 million dollars
No taxes back in those days.
Oh to have this kind of money to just move your house insides to a new location…even tho it’s not my style I sure could build a beautiful house too!
I think this house is for sale or was recently for sale.
Yes. But off the market now. Never sold.
Do you know who owns the Dark Shadows house today as anyone still alive
How is Collinwood these days? Is it in pristine condition or decaying which would be a disaster.
Sadly I doubt it is in pristine condition.
I got lost on this house, it took the police, bloodhounds to locate me. Lmao
Where's Barnabas?
It was Newport School For Girls for a while
Wonder what the rich sid to some of those girls?
FYI...
Dark Shadows
Was based on. A true story.
(Kinda)
How are property taxes even legal? 🙁
WHO has the money to gut one mansion & reassemble it in your NEW mansion? Good Lord!
lots of limestone in that house. Limestone attracts ghosts. I bet that place is haunted.
As much as i love looking at big houses i would never like to live in one, even with servants, in fact prob because of servants having to clean it all the time.
