They stole it from The fray - Over My Head (Cable Car) at 3:33, the exact same melody.

Abhiram Rao lol chainsmokers have like one of the worst albums out there, yet they're criticising other artists. At least Lorde had some artistic integrity when she criticised 1D's kiddie nananana-lalallala infested music.

The chainsmokers are trash, but honestly the missy elliott one could just be a chopped, screwed sample. So you can't really criticize that part and also stick up for the artistic merit of sampling in music.

This is called sampling. A lot of artist are doing it. I don't like the fact that people call it 'talent less' i think there sound is very unique. Drake & Rihanna are also sampling other artist. I think you can still be creative even tho you're sampling. That is just my opinion. The last one is kinda funny tho lmoa
    No hate

    • @SobrietyandSolace
      @SobrietyandSolace 7 лет назад +8

LittleBassMaster The thing is if it was a sample (as in directly sampled from another track) it would be more obvious that the melody came from elsewhere and it is usually a conscious stylistic decision rather than presented as something new with the source material glossed over. I love Kanye West's use of samples or interpolations as he always re-works them into something with a totally new feel and meaning, so like you I acknowledge sampling can indeed be a positive thing, putting a new spin on old songs. This Chainsmokers song was an example of interpolation; although I know there is nothing new under the sun, similarities will always accidentally crop up in music, art, literature etc and people are free to take influence from artists they admire or the public domain, I just hope people are honest about their influences, re-work it well into something vaguely original and give credit where it is due. They did eventually (to The Fray) and I like both their songs as very different tracks in their own right that happen to share a melody. I've got to say when shit like this happens it makes for a) a fun journey through musical history to find links between seemingly unconnected songs and b) some really fucking awesome mashups.

Sampling isn't copying a melody or rhythm. Sampling is taking a few second of the original recording and re-using it. And sampling laws require you to include the original artists of the samples in the credits to the song, even if the sample you used was a kick or a clap from a song.
On top of that the sound of Chainsmokers isn't exactly unique, what they did was take the concept of Future Bass which has been around for years already as a sidespin of "melodic dubstep", and slap pop vocals on it.
And truth be told, sampling isn't the crime here. Sampling without credits is. Neither is copying melodies, but copying without a co-write credit is.

Sorry you're not very musically inclined. No offense at all though, but Chainsmokers is simple ass music. Theres only 2 to 3 notes in a beat and a halfs time which is y it can sound like so many other songs. Chainsmokers is the perfect example of shitty new pop music done on a macbook to make it simple and catchy to grab the minds of the Millennial's simple minded ness.

Oml you can say the same thing about literally any song. If a song is written in the same key then obviously there will be parts that sound the same or similar to other songs. I'm not sure people understand that there isn't an unlimited supply of riffs, chords, and melody's just except that they sound similar and just enjoy the good music.

The Missy Elliot comparison is way off....You're crazy....Same with the banana thing. How could you legitimately believe these songs sound anything like the Chainsmokers songs? Also, what are you talking about saying that the Chainsmokers owe The Fray a "Paycheck"? Writing and selling music isn't a salary based job. Musicians don't get paid, they make their own money (Think of it as a large scale lemonade stand). The fact that they have thier name on the credit means that they will begin to make profit off of the song (Via advertisements and downloads).

i dont think that it is a problem to have inspiration from other songs. a catchy melody isnt terribly easy to make and and if you hear something that you like you want to recreate that feeling and change it. I think that this is something that all producers do. Also roses was such a innovative song and inspired an entire new genre of EDM so its hard to hate on that.

First of all what's so bad about recycling a song and turning into something better because in my opinion all the songs that they so called stole where alright but they made a new Version and even better it's called up cycling

Also you kind of do the same thing so why do you care exactly because you're taking trends and making them in songs that could be called "" not original

The blur between the line of genius and mad
No, he's right. Statistically speaking Closer did better than 679 ever did. Similar melody, different style of music. Closer was on the Billboard No.1 for a very long time and almost beat a record for the longest standing song on there (much better than 679 ever did).
Also, its called Sampling not Up scaling.

Evan white something better? Chainsmokers just make it worse. They're literally despised by every music critic and genuine music fans who understand music.

As much as I agree with caidence being somewhat copied. It's actual fact. That as long as your chord progressions/lyrics/rhythm it would pass.
How do you think mashups are so easily made?Majority of Pop Music use the same chords, but they then alter its tempo/riffs/etc
I don't mind The Chainsmoker because they are doing what they want. Not a big fan per say either.
But this isn't NEWS PEOPLEIT'S LEGAL AWARENESS
