Journey had so many great songs that standed the test of time.....Faithfully, Open Arms, Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin', Any Way You Want It, Anytime/ Feeling That Way.
This was one of my sister's favorite songs. She played it repeatedly for weeks on end. I went from loving it to loathing it. I know every word of it and I'm terrible with lyrics. I love the song again, but it took a few years of not hearing it to get there.
Tenure studying Konokol Drumming in India that opened his "Cramped Feel" of being a hampster tied to a pole in a room of wheels. Neal could play a massive kit, flawlessly, but it was always a mind struggle for him as he always second guessed his skill level. So he met with Steve and learned the methods of Fluid Motion and Rhythm/Fills that the instrument is capable of producing when under less tension, managing space more efficiently when creating pieces for Big Songs. 6 months later, Rush was cutting 2112..perhaps their most legendary display of their devotion to musicianship perfection. Steve's ability to manage his own very successful Jazz/Fusion Band Vital Information and Cut Big Rock Ballads woth Journey in the same week is IMO what puts him in the ICON category. Plus. He lives less than hour from me in Ashland Oregon, and Big Dawg Deeno's an hour North in Corvalis. Imagine that, 3 Drummers Who Shared The Stage With Journey all retired to Oregon.
This is why I love this channel; I learn so many things. For example: For 50 years I've been singing Hendrix's Purple Haze as 'Scuse me while I kiss this guy". Which made me feel rather uneasy. Prof of Rock's channel has freed me from being the Norm Crosby of rock lyrics. :P Just givin' ya the bidness Adam. Love ya brother. Happy Sunday.
My ex-boss Sylvia gave me a calendar gift of misheard lyrics, a different one for each day of the year, and on the front was the Jimi Hendrix "Scuse Me While I Kiss This Guy" lyric, the misheard of "...the sky.". So you are far from the only one who misheard it initially. Of course there is nothing wrong with guys kissing guys if it is consensual. I write that as someone who's not gay but two of my best friends are. Rock on, MustangWriter.
Hey Mustang! You're not alone on the misheard lyrics, but you're a stand up guy for admitting it! My ex insisted that in Ac/Dc's song, "Dirty Deeds", that the lyrics were "Neckties, contracts, I VOTED!" No matter how many times I explained that the lyrics were not "I voted" but "High Voltage", he told me I was wrong. They even had an album in the 70s called "High Voltage". I pointed out that in that part of the song, he's listing different methods for offing someone, so "I voted" would make no sense. I gave up when he insisted I'm wrong. When I was a kid, the Credence Clearwater song, "Bad Moon Rising" scared me some. I thought he was saying, "Don't go out tonight! It's bound to take your life, there's a baboon on the right!". I had seen a NatGeo documentary about apes, and it featured baboons with huge fangs, ripping some poor animal to shreds. When I heard that song, I was thinking, "Yeah, I'm hip John. I'm not going anywhere near a baboon!"
@@LazyIRanch LOL I'm sure I've screwed up lyrics too. Tom Sawyer by Rush comes to mind right off top of my head but wow, scuse me while I kiss this guy? LOLOLOL Some might say latent issues etc.. lol That one is just too funny and so is the baboon one you told LOL
I was in high school when this came out. Back then, kids were really clique-y - the Rockers, the Kickers, the Jocks, the Nerds, the Preps, etc. Journey was one of those bands that we ALL liked, no matter what group we were in. Even my mother, born in the Silent Generation during the Great Depression loved Faithfully.
Love Journey. In ‘81 we would listen to Journey Escape and AC/DC Back in black over and over on our record player. And Purple Rain (later of course) I saw at the theater and then stayed in the theater and watched it again. It’s also the only album where I bought the vinyl, then the cassette, then the CD, then the digital download for my Gen1 iPod, then digital download on my Apple Music. Obviously, it’s my all time favorite.
Prince was a class act and in return that was all he asked of his fellow musicians, which was please ask before you put one of my songs on your album. Alot of people got permission from the record company and not Prince, which caused a rift between him and other musicians. Both Faithfully and Purple Rain were in my opinion, some of the most amazing songs that were ever created. I do hear the similarities, but in the end they were definitely two different songs. Thanks Professor! Always a pleasure my friend ❤
I remember that at one point all muzic by Prince was removed from RUclips too. Or it was from all other unofficial channels. But I agree, Prince was one of the greatest.
@@V8AmericanMuscleCar Hello V8! Prince was highly protective of his music and he didn't believe in "free" streaming sevices. However, after he passed away and his family gained control of his music, his music was released on RUclips and Spotify etc. He is by far my favorite musician and he will be forever missed. Thanks so much for your comment! It was greatly appreciated my friend 🙏♥️
Professor, you are my Go-to guy when it comes to the stories behind music I love. I rarely listen to anyone else on YT, about such matters. I really appreciate how you do it all! Thank you so very much for everything! Much love 👍💜🌟😎
Love your show it is so nostalgic it feels like I'm 13 watching MTV again but somehow you keep more than just a Nostalgia you make it real and the passion is bleeding through every video I watch. I enjoy how much you love music because I don't disagree. With the passion you carry each episode.
You're doing such a great job Adam. I'm a younger Gen Xer (you're probably 1 - 2 years older than me) and these were my primary school jams. I watched a America's Top 10 every week religiously and being from the Caribbean, I also was a lovers rock, raggae, calypso, rap and dancehall head. I can't remember a time when music wasn't a part of my life. I still love Journey and Prince.
Faithfully is the ultimate power ballad. Nobody ever did or will ever do that sound better. Journey was running on all cylinders at that point. I still for the life of me can't understand why the decwas made to leave Only the Young and Ask the Lonely off of Frontiers. Great album and Faithfully is one of the all time best. Thanks again for another great video, Adam.
I don’t care what anyone says, Journey is Rock and Roll HEAVEN. One of the biggest entities in the world of modern music. Very few can reach the pinnacle of music, let alone hang with the top players. Journey has done what scant few have done. So beautiful. Essential music.
Great interview! Faithfully is perhaps my favorite Journey song ever. If I had the chance to meet Neal, Steve and Jonathan I'd want to thank them for the joy they've brought me with their music. Still my favorite band of all time.
FAITHFULLY will always be #1 to me. Journey will never be what they were when Steve Perry led them. They were young men at the peak of their lives and creativity.
Wow this song still chill me to the bone! Magnificent riff in a power ballad the vocal as always nobody did abd does what Perry made.. period! Schon abd perry each one at the top on their categories
I've heard of this story before from other sources. Prince was so worried he called and asked if they minded, they basically said it's a hit, release the song. Which was just awesome of them considering how many plagiarism claims there have been over the years and how big both Journey and Prince were at the time. Some called Journey's ballads too sappy but Neil Schon's guitar work just cuts right through that bs and let's you rock along to a love song. That's called TALENT. And no one in their right mind will ever criticize Steve Perry's vocals.
Journey's first three albums without Steve Perry were much better in my opinion. I don't care for him. Not saying he's not talented and not great at what he does but I don't like Journey with Steve perry.
All the little things that have to happen to bring Journey together, or any band. What if John Bonham said noway to Jimmy? What if Steve Perry who actually quit music altogeher passed on a meeting with Herbie Herbert? It all came together with Johnathon Cain joining. Bars and night clubs was not big enough and they became Americas first arena band and all concerts were sell outs. 12 months on the road, 6 weeks recording, back on the road with another platinum album. Burnout was inevitable. They gave us music that stands the testt of time and each generation discovers what this music is. Back touring again with a fantastic voice of Arnel Pineda. Journey has new life again. Thanks Arnel.
What a band. Actually never really got into them until Faithfully came out. When I started to listen to them realized a lot of the songs I loved where from them. Really loved oh Sherri by Steve. Since that was my name. And was personal to what I was going through. They were so good together. I think the music they made TOGETHER was magic. I try not to look at the fighting now between them and really not interested in anything new they’ve done. It’s not the same. You can’t go back. Glory days right. Sometimes you gotta let the past be the past. I’m impressed that Steve keeps his opinions out of the public, that’s a true gentleman. I’ll just put on my old records and listen to them. Memories for sure.
I remember seeing Journey in the Salt Palace 1986, The Outfield was the opening band, and they were Phenomenal!! Journey came out and they were Phenomenal to the Extreme Maximum Overdrive, I mean I was in Rock N Roll Heaven, they were so great! When they left the stage, we cheered for more, and Journey obliged. On either their first or second encore they played Faithfully, and it was only at that point that I realized that they hadn't played it yet. Their concert was so phenomenal, the music so pure, so captivating, so enthralling, that I'd forgotten that the song Faithfully had not been played yet. I agree with the professor, Faithfully and Don't Stop Believing, they're my two favorite Journey songs. There's not a man on spaceship planet earth that loves his woman that doesn't wish he'd written Faithfully for his wife, or even a song only half a great. True! Three chords and the Truth! Bty, I'll be seeing Journey this July at the Stadium of Fire, my 3rd time to see this, the greatest band ever!
"Faithfully" is a great song. The 1980's was the decade of the great power ballads and no lead singer of any rock group sang them better than Steve Perry. As a solo artist, he would go on to sing 2 more great ballads with "Oh Sherrie" and "Foolish Heart".
'Only the Young' and 'Ask the Lonely' are two of my favourite Journey tracks! Imagine 'Escape' with those two songs on it...? It would've been an unstoppable force and I reckon Thriller wouldn't have kept the No1 spot for as long as it did. I'm not surprised Journeys Greatest Hits album was so successful. In fact, I have listened to it so often that whenever I'm listening to any of their other albums that when a song ends I automatically hear the opening to next song as it appears in the order of the Greatest Hits BEFORE the actual track on the album begins. My brain is hardwired now.
STEVE PERRY IS THE BEST!!! 2ND BEST IS DEEN CASTRONOVO is really unbelievable when he sings and he plays drums at the same time he's probably the best that ever did both❤❤
I love the focus on the creation of the music and the band members input, obviously it was "the voice" that sold it, but there was always a phenomenal underlying structure of music under all of their hits
I remember begging my mom to go to a local Woolworths store ( New Hartford NY... Sangertonwn Square mall ) because friends from school said they had the Journey Escape video game for the Atari 2600.. and playing it relentlessly for weeks if not months while my older brother let me use his Walkman to listen to the cassette on. MAGICAL times
Love the Columbia comment made there, I remember catching vlog before it got taken down. Great song....Schon guitar simply sounds magnificent with the blend of Perry's voice! Cain's music writing was very good too Hopefully they can set their egos aside and get this CC situation worked out before it affects them on tour.
My first concert was seeing Bryan Adams open for Journey on their Frontiers tour. So many great songs and I'm so glad I got to see them in their peak. My friend went with me and his favorite song was Seperate Ways. My favorite was Chain Reaction. The first song they played was Chain Reaction and the last was Seperate Ways.
Love Journey and Prince(and his various bands), and I remember the original video from 6 months ago. Now, I'm even happier that I saw it, because I had no idea it'd been taken down.
Journey was a rock band back in their earlier days, I liked them more than the poppy sound they turned into. Neal Schon, what can you say. He is one fantastic guitar player!
I always thought that, while it was about touring musicians, it perfectly describes a truck driver's life. This song was the story of MY life! My favorite Journey song.. EVER!
I remember hearing Journey when I was a kid in the 80s, but recently, now almost 50, I've been going back and 'rediscovering" them, gorging on as much Journey as I can starting with their very first album before Steve joined. I absolutely love them, and I've been listening to a curated playlist repeatedly for weeks now. The only thing is... as far as I am concerned, the best Journey is Journey with Steve Perry. I can't bring myself to listen to any of the new stuff.
Loved Jonathan Kaine with The Babys. Also Santanas Neil Shaun and Greg Rollie.Journey is a wealth.Steve Perry had no limits to voice. Great stuff!I have albums,8 tracks, cassettes, cds, and downloads.Been with them a long time!
I would love to see you interview Richard Marx (a big Steve Perry / Journey fan) about his "Faithfully"-esque song "Right Here Waiting For You". This song has massive influence.
Professor, The fact you featured and interviewed Gary Numan, who’s still strong touring and writing career features many songs more anthemic and iconic than his only American hit “Cars”, I immediately subscribed and now anticipate every one of your posts...
I saw the Escape and Frontiers tour, both were massive but Frontiers just did it for me, it was very high energy, lots of pyro, very loud and I didn't see anyone sit down the whole show. The place was just going crazy. Bryan Adams did a super job opening for them, that's when he had Cuts like a Knife out and that was a huge record also that year and he got the crowd pumped up for sure, by the time he finished the crowd was going crazy and knowing that Journey was next they got even louder, then when the lights went out the place just exploded in screams and yells. That had to be one of the loudest shows I ever attended, my ears ringed for a while after that show and to this day I still talk about it. I'm so grateful that I got to see them when they were on fire all over the planet back then. I'm just disappointed the way things have turned out for the former members and current ones, so much drama going on.
There was "magic" between SP & Neal and the writing between SP NS JC was gold but also SS was the king for his playing . Love when u cover SP&JOURNEY so thank you for another great story.
Journey’s hit Who’s crying now, to me was the quintessential 1980’s song. It was slow with lots of guitars and keyboards. It typified for me the sound all music needed to have. That mystery goes a long way. I saw journey play a few years ago with the new singer. He hit all the notes faithfully. I still miss the creator, singer Joe Perry.
I was learning to play bass when this dropped. The bass line in this song is what drives it. And his name is Steve Perry. Joe is the lead guitarist for Aerosmith.
Thanks, Your interview with Neil Schon changed my mind about him. I thought he was not a good guy but now I think he’s a good guy. and the music’s always been great,,, I never really knew that much about anybody but Neil and Steve Perry but I’ve learned recently about the drummer now the keyboard player the bass player must be good too! But, it’s a BAND and that’s really the thing. Thanks for all you do, I appreciate your show, professor.
You know, I’m not really even into details about any music or band, BUT, I find your videos so freaking interesting that I’m hooked! The music you cover is from my generation and even tho I was never particularly interested in knowing details then, I guess I do now because of you! Thanks! 🤘🏼😎🎸
I just recently subscribed to your channel. It was after watching the video about Randy Bachman and the evolution of "Taking Care of Business". This video about Journey and "Faithfully" is also very interesting. Learning how a great song was developed and how much the artists invested themselves in the process, is like rediscovering old favorites. Thanks "Professor"
I remember watching the video the first time around. I’m not sure what happened or why it pulled but it’s definitely a story that’s worth hearing again. Great song by an absolute amazing band. Thank you for sharing this again.
I remember watching your coverage of this song previously, and I wondered why it's being featured again. I'm surprised it was taken down. Anyway, glad it's back up, great episode about a great song.
I was hooked on Journey from when I bought an 8-track of Infinity from my friend Paul who I worked with at Mickey D's. It was my first 8-track. The second was Toto's debut release.
Alright a Sunday drop! This is one of my favorite episodes too. This was the most amazing band of the 80s filled with creative geniuses Johnathan Cain and Neil Schon made power ballads that every superstar after them tried to capture that magic, including one of the best ever Purple Rain. That story of Neil getting on stage with BB King is one of my favorites too. Great redrop professor!
once I found my dad's Journey's Greatest hits, I listened to it so much the cd died in 6 months. we went out and bought 2 the next day, so I had my own to listen to until it died. my favorite album ever.
This song was the very first song I "tried" recording to cassette, but did it with a microphone held up to the mono speaker of my Sanyo portable AM/FM radio with cassette recorder that I had just received for my 12th birthday (I only had an AM clock radio older than myself prior to that, listening to the world famous KFRC 610 and KNBR 680 in SF)). Found out after recording that I could "dub" right from the radio to the tape. This is super nostalgic for me as I remember the quality of my recording being gawd awful and I have a fully odd personal history with the band. 😳. In 1998, I was driving taxi here in Reno and had Ross Valery hop into the passenger seat next to me at the airport. Cut to 2010, I was working the truck dock as a stagehand and got to run the spotlight for Ross (and also the late Glenn Frey at the same show). Thank you for this one.💙
Great video Professor! I never knew about Prince’s Purple Rain was indirectly influenced by Faithfully I remember the Journey video game back in early 1983 when I was a kid - I think it was an arcade game ? And the 1982 Escape video game for Atari 2600 The piano and keyboards are iconic in Faithfully
Journey could not have accomplished success without Steve Perry. They may not admit it. 😮
I never thought that Journey and Prince would be connected, but this is a great ballad to tie them together.
You know what? It actually makes sense when you think about it. Prince has always said one of his biggest inspirations was Carlos Santana and Neil Schon started in Santana's band.
When the sun came out, Journey has written so many great songs by then that this one was just okay to me. meh.
You know you’re a legend when even Prince is obsessed with your song.
It blends perfectly, I know since I have a vid of both performances. It truly is amazing.
I don't believe they sound all that similar, but there are mashups here on RUclips that are just seamless.
Steve Perry cannot be replaced
...often imitated, never duplicated.

Journey had so many great songs that standed the test of time.....Faithfully, Open Arms, Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin', Any Way You Want It, Anytime/ Feeling That Way.
Wheel in the Sky, Don’t Stop Believin’, Who’s Crying Now…
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 Yes, those too!
@@upinflames_01 It’s like, you name it! Can’t name ‘em all!
"Who's Crying Now" is my favorite Journey jam! So emotional!
My Dad loved Journey I will click on any Journey/Steve Perry video ❤️.....faithfully
This was one of my sister's favorite songs. She played it repeatedly for weeks on end. I went from loving it to loathing it. I know every word of it and I'm terrible with lyrics. I love the song again, but it took a few years of not hearing it to get there.
It’s okay. It happens to me more often with today’s hits then it does with older songs.
Good story. Mine was Tina Turner.
Most reputable percussionists will agree that Steve Smith is one of the best drummers ever. I wish more non drummers would recognize that.
So cool. I wasn’t born till 82. But growing up listening to my older brothers albums, Journey became one of my favorite bands.
Faithfully is the power ballad of the century.
Just givin' ya the bidness Adam.
Lol, that's freakin' hilarious! Almost sprayed my drink all over my living room!
You give your age away by referencing Norm Crosby (as I do by know immediately knowing who he is). Thank you for bringing back great memories.
Hey Mustang! You're not alone on the misheard lyrics, but you're a stand up guy for admitting it!
My ex insisted that in Ac/Dc's song, "Dirty Deeds", that the lyrics were "Neckties, contracts, I VOTED!"
No matter how many times I explained that the lyrics were not "I voted" but "High Voltage", he told me I was wrong.
My aunt who graduated high school in 1983 couldn’t help but sing along to Journey’s songs.
Don’t blame you there! Escape is such an incredible album.
It’s a thing called inspiration.
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980Well said my friend! Inspiration indeed. Thanks for the comment. All my best 🙏♥️
@@vannaty7 hey you're welcome. Wish you all the best! Cheers!
Professor, you are my Go-to guy when it comes to the stories behind music I love. I rarely listen to anyone else on YT, about such matters. I really appreciate how you do it all! Thank you so very much for everything! Much love 👍💜🌟😎
I absolutely love the Group and that Song. The 80's music saved my life!!
It’s a perfect song.
My favorite song by them would be Chain Reaction, but I agree!
FAITHFULLY will always be #1 to me. Journey will never be what they were when Steve Perry led them. They were young men at the peak of their lives and creativity.
Journey is one of a kind.. such a great time for all of us.
Wow this song still chill me to the bone! Magnificent riff in a power ballad the vocal as always nobody did abd does what Perry made.. period! Schon abd perry each one at the top on their categories
Absolutely.
As always, love anything Journey ❤
Faithfully is still my all-time favorite song.
Amazing. Some songs are untouchable by time. Faithfully is one of those songs. Great show, Adam.
"Faithfully" is one song I never get tired of-It's a certifiable classic to say the least!
Faithfully and The Flame (Cheap Trick) are the best of power ballad vocal performance. The sustained notes are beautiful and packed with emotion.
I just love Journey’s music. It’s very strong and hits me in the feels.
Journey's first three albums without Steve Perry were much better in my opinion. I don't care for him. Not saying he's not talented and not great at what he does but I don't like Journey with Steve perry.
I love how positive all these interactions were by the artists. helps me have confidence in at least a part of humanity.
So many great love songs by Journey
😇 May God Bless You Always, Professor Adam! 😇
I love Foolish Heart, especially.
Way to go Adam! Releasing another great segment on the king of Power Ballads bands! So much insite on this one!
2ND BEST IS DEEN CASTRONOVO is really unbelievable when he sings and he plays drums at the same time he's probably the best that ever did both❤❤
My absolute favorite song of all time ♥️♥️♥️
I love the focus on the creation of the music and the band members input, obviously it was "the voice" that sold it, but there was always a phenomenal underlying structure of music under all of their hits
Neal and Jonathan were incredible, INCREDIBLE players and gave these songs their magic.
Without question, my favorite song of all time.
Only the Young is about my fave Journey tune. Great stuff. As for Prince-that Was a good thing he did. Usually they take it and run.
Wow...this was great! Thank you so much!
Prince was inspired by a great band, not surprised. Great job professor 🤘
Fun episode POR. Glad you were able to get it back on-line.
Journey was a rock band back in their earlier days, I liked them more than the poppy sound they turned into. Neal Schon, what can you say. He is one fantastic guitar player!
The verse ( we all need the clowns to make us smile ) is so powerful and relevant today as it was in 1983.
Once again, fantastic show brother Adam.
I always thought that, while it was about touring musicians, it perfectly describes a truck driver's life. This song was the story of MY life! My favorite Journey song.. EVER!
The last time I was this “early” I was 14 years old!! Hahahahaha! LOVE your channel!
WOW Neal giving respect to B.B King and getting respect back
Professor,
The fact you featured and interviewed Gary Numan, who’s still strong touring and writing career features many songs more anthemic and iconic than his only American hit “Cars”, I immediately subscribed and now anticipate every one of your posts...
Great show! Love it. Love Journey!
Joe Perry?
I was learning to play bass when this dropped. The bass line in this song is what drives it. And his name is Steve Perry. Joe is the lead guitarist for Aerosmith.
@@cjgia4898 not just a great guitar player I guess
It’s a perfect slow dance number.
@@cjgia4898 isn't he with Aerosmith?
Thanks! 🤘🏼😎🎸
Just hit me how alike they are. Especially the solo.
@Anna Trail journey and drama have went hand in hand for years, I will check out their new album
Johnathan and Neal put the real journey in Journey.

once I found my dad's Journey's Greatest hits, I listened to it so much the cd died in 6 months. we went out and bought 2 the next day, so I had my own to listen to until it died. my favorite album ever.
I don't often listen to your videos over again immediately, but this one is choice!
Great video Professor! I never knew about Prince’s Purple Rain was indirectly influenced by Faithfully
I remember the Journey video game back in early 1983 when I was a kid - I think it was an arcade game ? And the 1982 Escape video game for Atari 2600
The piano and keyboards are iconic in Faithfully
It was a pretty cool video game, I heard.
