Tbh I'm not a huge fan of Nocturne. The OG series stayed as true as possible to the Igavanias, from the art, script, dialogues, character design and development, music. But Nocturne feels like... If they read all the positive things about the first anime and said, "What if we do the exact opposite." Also... Richter in Nocturne is like Samus is in Other M..... Just nonstop crying and whining.
Varney being Death will go down as one of my favorite twists of all time. It’s doubly great because going back and watching through season 4 a second time you can pick up on all the subtle clues such as Varney’s infamous stench, the way he admires Ratko’s penchant for murder (“It nourishes me”), and the fact that he constantly claims to be the terror or London from before it was London back in the Roman times (I can’t remember specifically what this alludes to but I believe it’s something to do with the idea that there simply were no vampires back in that age)
Also things like his eyes being different from other vampires. The collar of his cloak is shaped like a hood and scythe. It's very apparent when ratko is having his speech and varney is completely dismissive of it. Also right before the reveal, he absorbs some of the souls when he opens the door
He also doesn't drink human blood. When he and Ratko assaulted the Underground Court, he casually snapped a guard's neck and moved on instead of feeding, hinting at the fact that it isn't blood that nourishes him.
Peak castlevania! the trio back together fighting like they been doing it for years. My favorite part, trevor vs death. this is the same man in season 1 that just wanted to get drunk is now walking up to death, talking some shit, and then 1v1 death itself. the music score for trevor vs death scene is one of my favs. so good! also varny being death was hinted throughout the season if you pay attention.
The ring is a control ring. The Council of Styria all wore them as a symbol of trust for one another, but it also gave them control over another ring bearer who swore oaths to one or more of them while wearing it. That’s why Lenore made Hector put one on THEN made him swear loyalty to her. Just like how there are multiple magic mirrors, there are multiple ring sets. Saint Germaine was just wearing another control ring, with one put on the Rebis’ body so he could control it once it was complete. They’re special magic items, but they’re not unique (like the Morning Star whip).
I love how even after death reveals himself he doesn’t lose that same attitude or foul language that he keeps using as Varney. Too many times in other shows do characters who have disguised themselves and then reveal themselves as ancient gods or spirits do they just completely change the character.
That's what also makes it sort of amusing how this incrnation of Death doesn't sound like how media tends to portray Death. Most versions tend to sound rather cold, stoic, malicious, and downright sinister. This Death here just sounds like a cranky and tired old man that he's been doing the same dull job for fifty years.
Best fight scenes in the entire series. And most of all, the iconic trio are finally back together. Also. "Oi, Death. I want a word with you." Best line too. Gives me "Dormammu. I've come to bargain." vibes. One more episode than than it's Castlevania Nocturne, especially after it's second season came out recently.
Episodes like these just hit as hard as they do because of all the set up done before. All the character work, all the stakes being raised and all the elements coming together in the end. As I said in another Warren Ellis is a novel writer, and you can see how Castlevania is different from other TV shows because of that. It takes its time and when action scenes happen, they have major narrative impact. S03 was like pulling a slingshot, while S04 is the stone bring thrown. That's why I love both seasons, you can see they were clearly conceived together. While S01 and S02 were as well, but on much shakier ground, since Netflix put very little trust in the project in the beginning. If it were the netflix of today, this show would've been cancelled in S02.
Sooo hype when they come through and fight together again, and the fights in general are so good. And I love that reveal of Death. (I wrote "next episode is amazing" before watching the video and I thought the last fight wasn't in this episode, forgot how packed it was. And because of the edit I lost the "love" from the channel haha noo).
It's a little thing, but I just realized the trio fought Dragan and his necromancers in the clock tower of the castle, another classic location visited across many of the games.
Trevor did say that the one thing he and his family feared wasn't death, but never having stood up and fought for those who needed them. When Trevor moved on Death, he wasn't just fighting to protect Alucard and Sypha, but all those who were suffering because of this monster.
I was a little worried when you skipped over the scene in the Targoviste underground when Trevor explains that dagger was made by a mad magician "to carry out a murder / suicide pact with God," implying it was designed to kill God himself, but naturally something that powerful would kill the user as well. Nobody seems to notice Germain also sacrificed himself, because when Death ate the key, which was filled with souls to power it, he absorbed all the souls to power up himself instead, and spit the empty key back at Germain, calling him an idiot. So the key was empty. Then, in his final moment, Germain tapped the key, meaning he refilled it with his own soul as he died, to give it one last charge. Particularly after he did really see the woman he always wanted, through the portal, and saw her turn away from him, dismissively. He finally realized she had just used him to get her through the Infinite Corridor all those years ago. The con artist got conned. She got where she wanted to go, then wanted nothing more to do with him, and he realized everything he did to get back to her was for nothing. I think Death really was a bit stupid, because it's an elemental force, billions of years old. Most of its existence was feeding off bacteria and animals. It had no need to be clever. It also didn't realize if it killed all life on Earth, it would starve afterward, unless it used the Corridor to find another world, but it didn't seem like it planned that far ahead. It was just a force of nature, performing its intended function without thought or planning. I'm really glad it didn't turn out to be the mastermind behind Dracula's wife getting killed to trigger the genocide. Oh, and the big armored vampire at the end was the one St. Germain slapped in the face, back when they were walking through the woods together. He led the attack on the castle. 19:28 I think my favorite moment in the whole series is when Trevor compared himself to Death, and that they're both forces of destruction, who don't add anything to the world.

So, literature reference: Varney the Vampire (by James Malcolm Rymer and Thomas Peckett Prest in 1845) was the first vampire story featuring the vampire archetype as we know them today: human looking, monsters walking among us, all the weaknesses and so on. Brahm Stoker wrote Dracula in 1897, a much more popular novel featuring the vampire in its modern gothic form. So Death calling himself Varney the Vampire is a reference to the first vampire story (again, as we view vampires now. The idea of the vampire goes further back, but looked much different than what we think of them today).
I love that in this show as opposed to the games and other movies and show with Death in them, this Death isn’t actually the incarnation of death but rather an elemental being that feeds on the energies that are given off from dead and dying things. Also Malcolm McDowell is fucking amazing in this role.

The fun thing is the truth about Varney was hinted at, if just a little - People often commented that he smelled, which makes sense that he smells like death - There's one instance where his collar is bundled up on one side, looking like a grim reaper hood, and the other side stretched out, looking like a scythe - Even him being Varney of London. Varney is an actual vampire in fiction, appearing in Penny dreadfuls,, but was actually created before Dracula, and invented many of the tropes that Bram Stoker would take and popularize. Varney is literally the Hydrox to Dracula's Oreo. More than that, his stories of bringing terror to london, if telling the truth (and we might as well believe him now) would mean he's actually been around for hundreds if not a thousand years before Dracula.
Death is actually a character directly from the games. One of the big bosses you battle. It's so cool how they pull things from the source material into the show.
Having played some of the old school NES Castlevania games, Desth was always considered as a mini Boss, and was almost always worse than Dracula. Absolutely love how the series took the game concepts, like charging the whip, and some of the monster concepts like Laser mouth golem and Disappearing Needle golem, which were absolute pains to fight in the games. This series is so hype!
Fun fact: The raven wings Alucard's cloak turns into is the animation of his double-jump ability in the game Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. One of my favourite CV games incidentally.
The hypest moment that earned four seasons worth of build up. The way that they made you wait patiently for the Trio to come back and be an unstoppable force was worth it. Also, Sypha is forever the GOAT.
I don't know if this is official Castlevania lore, but my head cannon is that when the Green Eyed Woman saw what Germain was doing, she traveled through time and space to collect the pieces Trevor would need and put them in his path. My understanding is that "Death" was something like a scavenger that got too powerful, not actually Death itself. Not a natural part of the world.
The actor for death played similar roles with a similar bleak outlook on the role of humanity so its funny to see him again as Death. I loved this iteration of death but I read some people knockin on Deaths dialogue saying how immature or in-elegant it sounds but if I was as old as the dawn of mankind by this point, why would I give a fuucc so long as I get the point accross? 🤣

As Trevor states in here and in the 1st episode of Season 4, The entity that calls itself Death is not actually "Death", it's just an extraordinarily powerful spirit that calls itself Death due to the fact it is vampiric in nature, except instead of feeding on blood like typical vampires do, it feeds on souls - particularly human souls. It is why Death goes to such lengths to get Dracula ressurected because for the first time in history, here was a non-spiritual entity with the capability of waging genocidal war across the planet and succeeding - thereby feeding Death like a glutton, because at the end of the day thats all Death craves: Filling his non-corporeal belly with souls to satisfy his endless craving for them. He doesn't make anything, he doesn't build - he just eats, hides and influences those who can bring about mass death that he can feed on. in the actual Castlevania games, Death is actually Death itself, and is a fervent believer in Dracula and his hatred of humanity. He has an agreement with Dracula that in the event of his demise, every 100 years, Death will ressurect Dracula back into the mortal world as a never ending blight on humanity, which is why every single game regardless of which Belmont you play, Dracula is usually always the final boss.
As far as the woman in the portal goes, I think she was 100% there, but what happened is open to interpretation. The top two contenders are 1. She turned her back on him because she was disgusted with his actions and now wanted nothing to do with him 2. (partially because in the flashbacks at no point to we hear her speak) Saint Germaine greatly misread their relationship and she never loved him
Also love the viking vampire. And yes so horrible with the rebis. Damn I forgot this was in this episode! I thought it was the next! I cried, again. Holy shit the fight with Death is amazing, and Trevor's word to Sypha and then to Death as he walks up. Love it so damn much. Only bad part is that Alucard and Sypha could have joined easily, but I still wanted Trevor to do it alone. There's no season 5 per say. T.T

I had fun teasing the death puns with my Varney comments but if you didn't know it all just seemed like normal jokes hehe. Also, the Trefor comment well simply put, Sypha is pregnant. She has been more and more moody as the season went on and also became more powerful. Most likely due to being pregnant and Trevor knew hence the Trefor being a bad name. 1 more episode. Who knows what's in store seeing all the twists and turn. I just recommend paying attention cause there's no season 5. Series finale is next.
The trio is finally back❤🔥 Crazy episode! I didn't like Varney and I didn't like him in Death form, he was so annoying. Draculisa was horrifying, merging their bodies into one was a f*cked up idea and honestly it was terrible to watch😟

It's called Castlevania after all. I guess they're contractually obligated to put the best fight scenes in the castle.
This is without a doubt the best episode of Castlevania EVER! Not only is the action incredible, but you can truly feel like this is THE FINAL BATTLE.

I wonder how much of the budget for the season went on this one episode. I'm guessing about a third, and it was well spent.

Damn I forgot this was in this episode! I thought it was the next! I cried, again. Holy shit the fight with Death is amazing, and Trevor's word to Sypha and then to Death as he walks up. Love it so damn much. Only bad part is that Alucard and Sypha could have joined easily, but I still wanted Trevor to do it alone. There's no season 5 per say. T.T

I had fun teasing the death puns with my Varney comments but if you didn't know it all just seemed like normal jokes hehe. Also, the Trefor comment well simply put, Sypha is pregnant. She has been more and more moody as the season went on and also became more powerful. Most likely due to being pregnant and Trevor knew hence the Trefor being a bad name. 1 more episode. Who knows what's in store seeing all the twists and turn. I just recommend paying attention cause there's no season 5. Series finale is next.

The morning Star whip (metal one) reacts to the emotions of the wielder, and its "enchanteded" whit blesings and outher stuff (cant remember now more) to the point its almost magical
