Funny coincidence to stumble over this concept today. Just yesterday, I read in the newspaper that a woman has been knitting a scarf over the last year, two rows everyday, with the colours based on how many minutes delayed her commuters train was that day. (Spoiler alert, the result is not flattering for the railway company.) Same idea but with a vindictive streak if that’s something you find motivating.
Oooh! My city's train network would not be happy AT ALL if people did this! Hmmm, might be an idea, though; Metro Trains (Melbourne, Australia) might be forced to change their ways if a group of people all send them the visual results of their chronic lateness...
so i googled the story- I'm not surprised that it took place in germany as we make fun of our trains being often delayed. it's kinda painful, might also create a projekt like this hahahah
I made my dad a temperature blanket based on the year he was born. It was fun, unique, and he loved it. I did it quickly because it was based on data I pulled up.
That is a *fantastic* idea, young lady! Since I can no longer crochet (arthritis), my son was never interested in crocheting (and neither is his son) and his 2 daughters literally can't thread a needle (I kid you not!! Do they even teach home ec in school nowadays?), I'd like to adopt you. All kidding aside, I applaud your love and thoughtfulness for your dad. God bless you and your family.
Lol.. I was just thinking something similar. My daughter will be 7 in March and I was thinking that I might be able to look up weather info from her birth year and make a blanket based on that.. .... Mine would be look knit though.. I haven't had the time to sit and learn to crochet.. yet.
I'm a knitter from the pacific northwest, and I've seen similar projects of scarves or blankets where you do a row or a few rows in yarn matched to the color of the sky (taking a picture at around the same time each day, etc) and they turn out really nice with all the whites, blues, and greys!
Don't quite see the point really??!! Don't get why any would want to do one when just crochet or knit something that definitely turns out nice! First time heard of it and wanted to see what it's all about. Looks like one could end up with a lot of left over yarn. Good for the shops to encourage these products cos you end up buying a lot of different colours!
I know this is old, but it reminded me of something I saw a few years ago - instead of temperature, they did the sky color that day, so there were like 3 or 4 shades of blue, plus a couple of grays and a white. I think partly cloudy days were averaged out to a lighter blue depending how many clouds there were.
i think this would also be a great idea with sunsets or how the sky looks on a specific time in the evening. Winter months would be like dark gray or blue and during summer even red or pink-
I'm going to try doing one this year but I think on special days like birthdays and such I'll use a sparkly thread with my yarn for that day just because it was a special day this year
That’s what I did! All the birthdays were sparkling thread with the color of the day. And it was the year of the eclipse so the eclipse day I used silver and black variegated yarn
Dear, I gifted a red one to my son this past Christmas, red's his favorite color but I had to choose the shade,, candy-apple red, my worries about my choice faded when I saw his face while he wrapped himself in the "made by mom" blanket... 😊 I love my son
In the winter months it would be a little more interesting considering in one day alone it goes from 40 in the morning to almost 70 in the afternoon... well it depends on the part of texas you are in
Weather Underground gives temperature history for every location. I actually found temperatures for my oldest granddaughter from twenty years ago. I’ve made one of these for each of my five grandchildren, a grandniece and grandnephew, in many different color spectrums. The time frame commemorated their first year of life. Every one turned out beautiful. I love the idea of twelve blocks. I might try that if I ever make another one. The way I managed yarn quantity was to do a test row, pull it out and measure it so I knew how much yarn I needed for one row. I created a spreadsheet chart with each day and the temp and color, counted the number of rows for each color to see how much yarn I would need. Then I “did the math” based on the yardage in each ball. The prep time took an hour or two, but was worth it. If you’re doing one for a coming year, you can estimate by creating an initial chart based on average temps and then correct it with real temps as you know them (that’s how I di the one for my newest grandson). Also, I put a pretty border on when I was done, which makes a big difference in the finished product.
Why not do a temperature blanket that reflects your mood from day-to-day throughout the year? I think that would be more interesting than reflecting the temperature outside. I guess I could see how it could be discouraging and depressing but I would rather see my true nature throughout the year rather than actual temperatures reflected. That would be something that you would keep and remember, a much better keep sake because it reflects the creator. I don't think I'd do a blanket though.... something with smaller squares or circles I think. This is just me thinking out loud
Sam Withoutlimits Love your idea. It would be like a "mood" blanket, like mood rings used to be. You could maybe even use the colors the ring used, or use a color pallet that goes well in your home. It would be interesting to look back at it knowing it tells the story of how your year went.
@@bookswithb2684 yeah - journaling - that takes the idea to a different level - something to look back on and see how you did throughout the year - not the temp but you which makes it a whole lot more personal. thanks for that addition!
The neat thing is that your year starts when you want it too. Coming into this early February? No problem, finish it 365 days later. It doesn't have to be a true calendar year. I've been looking for a new project. I'm going to look into this more.
I love the idea of making a mood blanket that will show the range of my overall emotions over the year. I have seasonal depression and I would actually be able to visualize my mood patterns
That would be awesome. I'd love to use soft colors for calm days, and vibrant colors for days with strong feelings.. although it might not be super pretty with all of the colors not matching. I'll figure it out.. 😂
Hi, I am very late but thought I could suggest my project, which is a mood snake. I crocheted a snake head, then every day am adding 2 rows corresponding to my mood
Does a red white blue and a blended red white blue within it. With DC to hc to sc I'm making it into it to a Cardigan started out as blanket lol it's retangle and I live in nursing home. And i live in Missouri very vet country my family are
Thank you for breaking this down. I came across a post about a temperature blanket that started with "I know people hate temperature blankets" and I was left wondering how people could have such strong opinions about something that sounded so innocuous and how I had been making for this long without having ever heard of this idea.
I randomly decided to do this for the first year of my husband and I's marriage. Big advice for those who are starting mid year, search up your city's weather records for the year! A lot of times those things are kept on record for people doing research, school projects and domestic projects like this! Its literally mid august and im able to find records from the start of the year!
It's January 3, 2022 now. I just came across this video and I think it's a great idea! My oldest daughter also crochets so I think I'll do it with her. It'll be easy enough to look up the temp for the last few days to start the blanket exactly on January 1st. We live in Southeastern Wisconsin, so we'll have a very interesting array of colors by the time December 31st comes around. Thanks for the great idea!
Rainbow, yes! However, not one that’s primarily orange and red in the middle! I might have to adjust some of July and Aug to include brown and black when it’s freaking hot and overdone here! Lol! I love the greens blues and purples, but I live in the hot desert! Lol. Maybe I’ll pick another location and do a Saskatoon blanket!😂
I have seen a really cool planner at Walmart in the yarn section with the knitting and crochet supplies. It's literally a project planner. You can keep track of your yarn, supplies, and project with it and it's also like a regular monthly planner. I haven't used one yet, but I want to get one! I'm now excited to do one! I want to do one for my daughter for the year she was born. She's 15, a brilliant aspiring game designer and artist and is in to pastel goth so I'll probably look for some great pastel colors. I've seen skull patterns in shawls and what not and I believe I came across a pattern where it was just a granny square style skull. I think she'd love it! I've thought about doing a temperature blanket, but haven't had the courage to do one yet. I think this year will be my year to finally do it. This year she turns 16 so I think it'd be a cool thing to give her as she loves blankets.
@@AnamariaMendes I couldn't find an image of the Crochet Journal, but I found the Knitting Journal. www.walmart.com/ip/Knitting-Journal-Knitting-Projects-Keep-Track-of-Your-Knitting-Crochet-Journal-Size-7x10-Paperback-Paperback/631882152
I recently saw someone make a temperature blanket where, instead of varying color to indicate temperature, they varied the stitch. They chose one color and then assigned different stitches to different colors. The end result had wonderful effect because they used more textured stitches, like bobble and puff stitches. A neat idea for those concerned about an overwhelming color palette.
You are a wonderful teacher. I could listen to you talk about almost anything and you always get my mind ignited. Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful knowledge and abilities with us. Hoping you never let anyone dull your Sparkle.❤️
I've never heard of this! I was a Geography teacher, so I thought of a graph, where I would crochet up to a certain temperature and the rest would be a main color. That way, I'd get to choose two or several favorite colors. Or you could choose a theme of precipitation, with white for snow days and blue for rain days.
Different stitch represents precip type and possibly how much indicated by stitches in a row with a single crochet stitch between? Half inch = one special stitch separated by two plain stitches, one inch = 1special, 1plain. 3 inches =3 specials, 1 plain. I guess you could modify that to suit indefinitely!
I did one for the average temperature per month for our first 10 years of marriage. Put white in between the years and added surface stitches on the birth month of my daughters. It is on our couch and love it. Btw it is made in neat ripple stitch.
I tried this back in 2017 and made 2. I've found that I like using only two colors. My daughter's blanket was yellow and grey. Sunny days were yellow and rainy or snowy were grey. It turned out gorgeous. This year 2022, I plan on doing variegated beige and a cream since my decor is Boho.
One of my favorite tempghans I’ve seen over the years is one where instead of different colors, they chose different stitches so it was all the same color but had some cool textures, would love to do something like that one day
I started this project last February on the Spring equinox. I planned 4 blankets, one for each season, so I could vary the stitch and it wouldn't be HUGE! It's been fun. I have a diagonal granny stripe that turned into a lap blanket and 2 other patterns that I can use on a bed. Currently working on winter: winter solstice to spring equinox, in a drunken granny stripe. Full circle. I may start a 2019 project and do 2: January 1-June 30 and July 1-Dec 31. Wunderground has a calendar option where you can choose the city, month, year and see the historical data.
I've made them in the past and had so many comments! What I did is researched a way to get year long temps for Portland Oregon for the year 1999 and for 2008 in Ft Leonard Wood Missouri. I then made up a blanket for each of my kids! Using a pattern I wish I still had that had exactly 365 rounds. It was a lot of fun!!
@@caryulmer5578 That is what I did. I made one for both my kids. As I stated in my comment, one from 1999 and 2008! I just wish I still had the pattern I used, because it worked out perfect.
There are not enough colors created all over the world to create a blanket for Michigan that thing will look like a colorful mandala and it would be hug! I would love to see what you come up with
Lol, I know exactly what you mean! I grew up in southwest Michigan and the weather changed by the minute. It's similar here in Ohio, so I'm only going with the high temperatures. Wish me luck!
If you have a wide range of temperatures to deal with, just make the temperature bands wider with more degrees in them. Fortunately, there are no temperature blanket police.
It doesnt even have to have colors. You could do a white to black gauge with greys. Or just all greys. You can also do all neutrals or browns. You dont have to do colors at all if you get creative. Or you can do 1 color but different shades.
You sure can, you just have to find the yarns with the variety of colour you need to mark the different days. A single colour with all its shades could be a stunner
@@RavenMeer I love that idea! Depending on the brand of yarn you're using that might be impossible (offhand I know some brands only have like 2 shades of yellow, for instance), but I love the idea of doing like a deep, bold red for the highest temperature down to a pale pink for the lowest temperature, for instance? Also I guess if your chosen brand doesn't have enough range you can fudge it by doing two colors together.
I've made tempghans for my daughter and grandchildren. You've inspired me to make another. This time I'm going to make one for my birthday in each year I've been alive. The hope is to add to it as long as I can. :-)
@@mommyeyes I thought that too until I got the temps for my date in January. They ranged from 34 to 80! There are 33 different temperatures. If this is something that interests you, check the temps first. You might be surprised. I am doing each of the 33 in a different color. I am 66 years old so that would be a lapghan or I am considering adding a row of white or cream between colors to make it longer. I saw someone suggest putting grey on a row if there was rain that day. :-)
I’m almost done with mine. I did the rainbow colors and a single crochet and I wrote down the highest temperature of the day for every day of 2018. I got a little behind but that’s why I started righting the temps down. Once I start a project, I am committed til the end. I can’t wait to finish it. Only November and December left. Wooo!!!
Hmm.. I've committed to busting my stash in 2019 and this sounds like one way to nibble away at it. I'm not keen on basic temp colours but you've given me an idea; to just choose colours that fit my taste. I'll have to hunt up an interesting pattern and get started - I'm already one day late!
Hahaha...good luck busting that stash... I've tried that every year for decades. I usually get depressed and go on a buy binge when I see my plastic bins getting space in them!
I made em for my kids for their 1st year of life. They love em regardless cuz each blanket is unique to each of them. Also, I used Red Heart Super Saver yarn-they have a huge range of colours and, best of all, NO DYE LOT!! 🤓
I'm thinking of doing one, but in knit instead of crochet, using a different stitch pattern for each season. Since I hate weaving in the ends, I think I'll leave them as fringe. I knit & crochet, but knitting is my first love, and this will be my first temperature blanket. If this one works out, I might make one for my great grandson who is currently 5 months old.
I am watching this video for a second time with months in between the first and the last time. I really enjoy the way that you teach how to crochet something in straight-forward terms! I like that!
I started after the start date and it's now even further behind the start date. I do two rows some days and none others and I am happy as it is a record of a very special year to me and looking at it will always bring a smile to my face. If you like the idea there is no need to crochet every day. You can go as many years back in time as you like to mark a special year for you or the recipient. Some people do them as wedding presents, doing that first year of married life and gifting it a year later ... now that would stress me for sure.
Sounds like a lot of people were just looking for problems that aren't really there haha. Just do it! It's fun. I actually made a temperature scarf, because I knew that besides my other hobbies/projects, I would not always be up to a long row for a blanket. And the scarf is just perfect. A row is so short, it can easily be in your daily routine next to all the other fun stuff.
I live in an area which would make me sad to map. It’s changed so much in ten years and for the worse. People who didn’t live here don’t understand, but we had really special weather in a really special place. We’re called the Lost Coast because we’re over 200 miles north of San Fran (still in California), and yet they’re called NorCal. We also differ a lot from SoCal. We rained almost every day, so everything was a rich green. Temperatures were an average of 40-50F. My summer days were spent playing in puddles and mud or watching the rain drops race down the window- betting silently to myself which would win. And the thunderstorms- they were like fireworks! They were so beautiful. I never minded when the power went out. (Our county is pretty poor money-wise, but rich in other things) We would just set up the candles and get out the flashlights and board games. It’s completely different now. We had a major drought along with the rest of California for the first time in as far back as I can remember. Everything turned this ugly yellowish tinge after a while. We used to flood annually, and now we’ll be lucky if we get a 20 rains a year. If I do one of my hometown in a time passed- it’ll be a reminder. If I do it from this year- It’ll be a reminder.
I chose to go to Humboldt state for the weather, I loved the idea of it being rainy all the time but to my surprise, I haven't even gotten to use any of the many raincoats I bought. It truly makes me sad to hear how different it used to be.
I adore your energy and positivity! You have inspired me to get back into crocheting, after years away from it...I got burned out by making things for others (hobby business) instead of for the joy of it. I am a few weeks behind but I am excited!
Naomi Hutchin ditto! I don’t want a big blanket but I thought 2 rows of each colour over the year would make a nice sized scarf. But then watching this video, I like the idea of 12 squares, you can see what each month looked like and get to do 12 different stitches! Moss stitch, back stitch, sc, hdc, etc. Now I’m conflicted! I started one last year and I don’t think I did two weeks worth of the scarf! Ha! Maybe charting the temperatures and doing a month at a time is more manageable?!
I've not heard of a temperature blanket but I make mood blankets. I like the V stitch for this although obviously other stitches work. I just noticed I was picking random colours for each row and the colours mirrored my mood at the time. I have a lot of ends to hide but the blankets look good. I give them as gifts.
@@ajmatt574 it did turn out big and I gave it to my Mum for her bed. The second one I've made for my daughter. Every row is a different colour. Lots of ends to sow in. They turned out lovely. I'd do it again but I'm aware now of how long they take being of a bigger size.
@@ajmatt574 Gosh that's huge. Even split in half they're big. Mine was enough for a single bed. I'm doing a corner to corner blanket now and that's turned out larger then intended but I'm determined to finish it. It's a gift. I'll get around to doing one for myself one day 😆
Margaret Davies I haven’t tried a corner to corner blanket yet. I think that could be cute. Probably not for a temperature blanket, unless I made small ones and then sewed them together to make a larger afghan. 🤔 I’ve made a lot more Amigurumi than afghans.
I stopped mid-way on both my 2017 and 2018 blankets. So this week I am finally finishing them. Not by crocheting the rest of the days, but by taking what I did do and turning them into wall art, 2 pillows, 2 sachets, and a baby blanket. I'm pretty happy with this result, that those months of work aren't being wasted! I'm also 9 days in to my 2019 blanket. I am obsessed with temp blankets! I actually learned to crochet in 2016 so I could make one, but I never got further than a month or two in that year. I am determined this will be the year I finish one completely. Just found your channel and subbed. Can't wait to see your temp project progress.
I have decided to start a temperature today (found this video) and with a little research trying to catch up; I figured out that if you got to weather.com you can see a monthly forecast. I already know this is gonna save me 100% so I thought it was worth sharing here! Also, I’m glad I found your channel! Can’t wait to see everyone’s progress with the hashtag!
I started my temperature blanket this year and I'm so excited about it! I am using the corner to corner pattern. I live in Alaska so there will be lots of blues and purples for the colder temps which we have a lot of, but in the summer, our weather gets a little crazy. I'm really excited to see how it turns out!
Thank you. I've often considered a temperature blanket but just didn't know if I'd follow through. However, after watching your video and hearing the enthusiasm in your voice I decided to follow through. But I'm going one step further. Our youngest son is still currently living at home but plans on following in his brothers footsteps and our family tradition by joining the Air Force after his 21st birthday (Nov 2022). I thought wouldn't if be cool to give him a temperature blanket beginning with the day he was born through the first year of his life. Presenting it to him on his 21st birthday. Now the research begins as we've lived in 2 states during his first 21 years.
I just found your channel and love it! You give such a great detailed, thoughtful, and exciting overview of temperature blankets. Looking forward to seeing how yours develops!
Thank you for taking up the mantle for temperature blankets. I just finished one for my daughter’s first year living in Idaho. It is all you say, hard to keep enthusiastic about every day, but in the end, I created an unbelievable memory for my daughter. Wish I had enough strength to make another with you! But carry on!
I live in new england where the weather changes frequently so I didn't do a temperature blanket this year, however, I did plenty of stash buster blankets because I was home alot. At least I can give them out as gifts this year for christmad.
I made a crochet temperature blanket for my mom, representing the first year (1960-1961) of her marriage to my dad (13 months). She had tears in her eyes when I told her, since my dad passed away in 2011. I also made it a family blanket with the high for the day each of us three children. I could not find the highs for the days my mom and dad were born, so I used their favorite colors. I found a neutral color to separate each month with 1 row. Plus the first year was spent in three different places (my dad was in the Navy), so I used two rows of same neutral color to separate each location. I used three rows to separate temperature from the family section. Also using the neutral color I made a border using a fan type stitch, it turned out huge, and beautiful. I am excited to give it to her. I used sc crochet stitches and it is big enough to go on her bed if she wants to use it there. It was a HUGE, long term project I loved doing. It was what it represented and who I was making it for. Would I do the same project again? Absolutely. Why? Because it was for my mom and I know she will treasure it.
here i am in 2023. New to crochet and decided to do a temperature blanket. I'm not a huge fan of the of the bold rainbow pallet. I've opted for a forest pallet, ranges of greens, brows and neutrals. I'm super excited to get started. I'm just waiting for the delivery of a ball of white to turn up so that i can highlight the first of the month with a white stripe and then the colour.
It might be interesting to make a temperature blanket that’s a gradient of a single color ( ex.: gray, pink, etc.) where colder temperatures are shown with lighter shades & hotter temperatures are shown with darker shades.
Thank you for addressing my concerns for starting my temperature blanket ( 1 month behind) . You gave me hope and encouragement. I know I will be needing more encouragement as I go !
My sister-in-law and mom and I are doing temperature blankets with the same colors based on where we all live so we can visualize the differences of climate :) I'm a beginner and I hope my blanket is as nice as theirs when we all show and tell lol
I made a temperature blanket for 2021 and gave it to my mom for Christmas. She is absolutely obsessed with it, even though there are things I would do some things differently next time. I thought it was really nice to make, and it gave me something to do all year long
Thank you for your comments and suggestions. I know I’m late to the party - it’s now 2023 - but I had never heard of temperature blankets until a few days ago, and now I’m planning to make one. Another RUclipsr is going to teach a different stitch every month to make it a sampler. I’m going to be living in / visiting at least three different countries this year, and I’m going to section off the countries, I’ve got my palate (I have a huge stash of yarn, so no problem with coming up with enough of each color), and I’m fiddling with the temperature ranges, and I think I’ll end up with something I really like.
This is 2022, but I just found this video. I hope your blanket came out as you hoped. When I made a temperature blanket, I did it for one month and I chose a variegated yarn and picked solid colors that matched. I loved my blanket and gave it to a prayer shawl ministry at my church. This year I am cross-stitching a temperature tree! We’ll see how that goes. LOL
I would have never guessed that was what my Grandmother made! A temperature blanket! I don't know who has it since she passed, but I hope they are enjoying it during this cold weather. Thank you.
I just saw this video and wanted to add my insight for anyone who might be doing this. I did a temperature scarf a few years ago and even though it was knit, not crochet, I have some tips that might help you, and a design idea. For the record, i do crochet as well. For those getting lost on their weeks. I used the national weather service station closest to me when I missed the news report for the day. (Also you might be able to get past data if you wanted to do a temperature item for a different year.). Similiar to the poster below me, except I used a different stitch to also represent how much precipitation we got that day. Since I had to accomodate for snow and rain within a year, each stitch represented 1/2 inch of precipitation. I also choose a side of the scarf to present morning and evening. So if it snowed an inch from noon-1pm, those special stitches went in the middle of the row. There were sometimes the whole row was the other stitch (purls for those familiar with knitting) I'm not certain how this would work with crochet since it seems crochet stitches change in height and width. But it is food for though.
Happy New Years and may God bless you in a special way on each and every day throughout the new year. I have never done a temperature blanket seems like a lot of yarn to commit to for a whole year long project. I think it would have more cooler colors than summary colors since I live in the Midwest. But okay maybe I can try and see if I can afford to buy it I don't know yet
It is February 2022, I'm thankful this video is still here because I had never heard of it & I'm really fascinated by this idea & the variations I've read in the comments. I have a lot of depression & anxiety & I think this could be really good for me & a good distraction. It would be amazing to see it completed & be like, "Wow I did it! I stuck with even when I didn't feel like it & this is a huge step for me in learning how to stick with a project til the very end." I'm pretty ADD so sticking to a project & actually finishing it is a big struggle for me lol I really want to do this & I have a lot of yarn so yeah, let's go! Now to decide if I'm going to do 40 something rows to catch up from January 1st or catch up from my birthday which is this month & it will be closer to a year. Or go from start date to start date. Nothing wrong with that! Now for some research, some digging through the garage & some planning to get started. Just has an idea, what if you did different hues of one color (probably with some white to balance it out?) that represents that month for you. For example, reds & pinks & white for February, greens for March, ect. I feel like that could be neat as well. But it could be hideous too. That's why you gotta try & see. Don't be afraid of a project not turning out how you wanted & it's not worth fixing so it's better to start over. Don't let all that yarn, all that fabric, all that paper, all that paint, all those pens, all that vinyl, all your ink pads, whatever your medium is, don't let it just sit in storage never to be used because you're afraid of messing up (whether it comes from perfectionism or guilt for wasting money, etc.) & holding back from the act of simply creating, or keeping yourself from having a really good outlet to process emotions ,or even not pursuing your passion & sharing it with others via charity or income, because you are afraid no will like your creativity, your designs & ideas. All of this is stuff I'm struggling with myself, I'm not perfect over here. Just sharing encouragement while trying to encourage & believe in myself too. I have quote from Indiana Jones & the Crystal Skull, that resonated in my core when I heard it & it has stuck with me ever since. It may even be the last line of the movie. But the quote is, "How much of life is lost in waiting." Like wow right?! I don't know about everyone else bit I wait a lot. I have a hard time doing because I'm afraid & insecure. But I'm denying myself so much joy because I'm waiting for the day I'll feel like starting. Or the day I have no fear & I'm rearing and ready to go. But if I wait, I'll never start! Usually we have to act into feeling & take that leap of faith. So here we go. Taking a leap of faith even though I feel a lot of fear & overwhelmed. I'm also realizing how much this applies to life in general. We are one choice away from living the life we dream/the first steps to get there. I believe in all of you! Don't wait, do.
Until I saw your video, I had never heard of a temperature blanket. I just happened to look at the week-ahead temperature highs and every day was in the 30's EXCEPT for Tuesday, where it was a high of 6 degrees. Crazy blanket right there here in Central New York! You could have a gathering from people from across the country with their temperature blankets. What an amazing display that would create!
I just found your channel and I love it already...I live in Melbourne, Australia and I am obsessed with corner to corner blankets. Would love to try a temp blanket using this pattern.
Weather Underground is great for charting your yearly temperatures and researching temperatures for a specific year! I made a tally mark for the temperature (high and/or low) and that helped me figure a basic year range to plan colors. I ended up using a 10 degree range per color. I had 12 colors. I did a typical granny square with the daily low as the center and the high in the middle row and typical black as a border to tie it all together. It fits my queen-sized bed.
I’ve been researching this for a couple of months as I want to tackle this project this year. My first thoughts were choose colors I find aesthetically pleasing/that match my home. second I live in Southern California, so I had to come up with smaller temp ranges. The only thing I have left to do is to decide on a pattern (and wait for my yarn to be delivered). I’m a beginner so I want something simple, but not boring. Great video, I wish I’d found this weeks ago. Great advice, thanks for sharing! 💞
Love these ideas :) I decided to do one this year in pastel shades (as I've been wanting a pastel blanket for a while now), and found a pattern that uses a new stitch in it to make it interesting.
I'm doing one based on drawing daily tarot cards for 2024!!! It's gonna be a lot more random than temperature and I have 10 colors from browns, purples and greens in muted shades. I have 5 different categories for the cards: Major Arcana, Suit of Swords, Wands, Pentacles and Cups, and since you can read Tarot cards upright and reversed that gives me 10 colors in total. It's gonna be gorgeous!! I also decided to do different stitches for different card groups: 0-10 Major Arcana, 11-22 Major Arcana, Ace-5, 6-10 and Page-King. This way I have 5 different stitches to add a bit interest into the project and also have a more accurate documentation of the cards I drew over the year!!
I’ve been doing these for several years. I prefer to make one for the first year of life. I do the high from the day they were born to their first birthday. My nieces and nephews loved them!!
They look like fun and I plan to make one for each of my adult sons based on their first year of life. Since it is hard to know what to crochet for them, this project is personal and interesting so I think that they will like it. I plan to do a simple blanket that will be fast and easy so it won't interfere with my more complex projects. If I fall behind, no big deal. I might even use a different stitch for wind speed.
Ughhh I started two of these blankets and never finished them . I live in south Florida our temps don't fluctuate much at all so temp blanket would become very boring so I decided to do mood blanket . I chose about 12 different moods assigned colors to each mood , I was excited to start thinking i would wind up with a beautiful blanket ..... NOT I quickly got bored and the more i thought about it the idea was a bust ... 365 rows or 365 granny squares no matter what size was going to turn out a HUGE blanket, hard to handle and too big to use . For those of you excited to do this project more power to ya have at it , just wasn't for me
You just inspired me to create a blanket of my own. I recently got engaged right before the new year and I’m thinking of doing this with our wedding colors through the date of our wedding next year. Wonderful suggestions and ideas how to stay interested and inspired. Much love to you! ❤️
I did a temperature blanket for my Grandson from June 13, 2017 to June 12, 2018 (his first year). I used rainbow palette and I loved it. I will be doing one for his baby brother (July 12, 2018 to July 11, 2019) using the same palette. I record the max temp for each day and then divide it by 7 to get the avg for the week. I look up the info on a monthly basis. Last year I started a temperature shawl. The mistake, I feel, I made was taking the average temperature for the week. I didn't get to use all the colors I wanted. I did not like the way it turned out, but I will use it as a doll blanket for my neighbor's granddaughter (she doesn't know it yet). I will redo it using the same color palette i used for my shawl, but use the daily high. I will crochet a row for each day (365 vs 52) so I can have more variety. Also, I found the wunderground's numbers changed when I would go back and double check. So, I found it better to wait for the month to pass and then get the information.
I try to set out an hour every week to do my rows. When I feel really motivated I do a row every day, or I do small clusters of 3 or 4 days at a time. Taking little bites helps!
I did a knitted temperature scarf in 2019 and really liked how it turned out. The only thing I’d change if I did another one would be more colors/smaller temp ranges.
Why do people waste their time on hating something? I love temperature blankets. If someone doesn't like it, then no one is forcing them to look at it, and the more they express hate on it the more they're gonna be seeing it
You may want to link up to the #TempestryProject! They are trying to encourage a global movement with people all using the same colors to do tapestries that can show climate change in an easily accessible way. They are beautiful and use good yet affordable wool (Knitpicks Wool of the Andes). They also have an excel sheet that helps you calculate how much yarn you need and instructions on how to get your weather data on NOAA for a given year. In their facebook group, a few people mentioned planning to do blankets instead of tempestries - sounds like a great way to join forces!
It's a great idea. Although I think it I'd like to keep it more personal, like crocheting one this year, and with the same color chart and temps from the same city, doing one from the year I was born (1992). I think seeing the difference would be shocking!
It took me 2 years to finish a temperature blanket, and I actually only got halfway through the year, as it got sooo long that I just had to finish it off. My daughter loves the blanket, and I was pretty happy with it once it was done. I would love to try it again with a different plan. Thanks for sharing ideas about how to revive it!
What area are you living? I'm in southern California. I started a temperature blanket in 2017. I used a double crochet stitch. I still have not finished but what I did was keep a log of the temperature on my Color Note app and for the days I did not record the temperature I went to the Weather Underground app. I entered my area it had the actual high & low temperature for that day. I haven't totally given up on this one. I'll finish it some time this year. I think I will also start a new one this year using the suggestion of color palette of gradual hues of one color. Different hues of my favorite color, lavender. I'll use various hues from lavender through dark purple or maybe blues, Then I'll figure out the stitch I want o use. Not sure yet.
Hi - I have been working on one for 2020. I crochet small granny squares - one per day - using colors that I like. It's fun to see how the temp dictates how the blanket will look. I live in Connecticut so we have all 4 seasons which gives a good range of temps and colors. Good luck and Happy New Year to all!
Been knitting and crocheting for 50 years and have never heard of temperature blankets before. As I've read through some of the comments here, you could really do some wonderful variations on this. Thinking about Dr. Seuss' 'My Many Colored Days,' you could make one based on your mood for the day. So many interesting ideas for this!
LOL! I love this idea.
I've heard about this one.
so i googled the story- I'm not surprised that it took place in germany as we make fun of our trains being often delayed. it's kinda painful, might also create a projekt like this hahahah

I made my dad a temperature blanket based on the year he was born. It was fun, unique, and he loved it. I did it quickly because it was based on data I pulled up.
Where did you find this data? I'd like to do these for family members if I can
Weather underground. I just googled it first to find the site that actually had the data for the locations needed.
@@jessiwhite7417 that's fantastic! Thank you!
What a fun idea! I think I'm going to steal that idea for my mom.
My daughter is pregnant & I'm thinking of doing a temp blanket for baby with only 9 squares & each square to represent each month of pregnancy.
That would be sooo cute
That’s a really adorable idea and something both your daughter and her baby would both cherish, I’m sure 😊
Cute, that would be such a sweet idea
Lol.. I was just thinking something similar. My daughter will be 7 in March and I was thinking that I might be able to look up weather info from her birth year and make a blanket based on that.. .... Mine would be look knit though.. I haven't had the time to sit and learn to crochet.. yet.
Kalender jay
I live in the West of Ireland. I might do one based on daily mm of rainfall instead 😁
Oregon coast here.... rainfall blanket would be perfect!
Honestly that sounds lovely
😂
I live in the west of Ireland too, how did it go?
I'm a knitter from the pacific northwest, and I've seen similar projects of scarves or blankets where you do a row or a few rows in yarn matched to the color of the sky (taking a picture at around the same time each day, etc) and they turn out really nice with all the whites, blues, and greys!
This is literally the first time I've ever heard of this. I don't quite understand why there would be so much hate for these...
Me too. I think it's really cool
I like them but some don't because it might not be as aesthetically pleasing as blankets with a set pattern
Many don’t consider the size of what 365 rows would be and they end up really huge
@@mwolfe7883 most of the ones ive seen were done by week, but i see what you mean.
I decided to knit a temperature blanket for 2020. Little did I know that I would be creating a record of one of the CRAZIEST years! LOL
Historical piece
It will be in a museum someday. Or a family heirloom.
I would love to see a picture of it
I know this is old, but it reminded me of something I saw a few years ago - instead of temperature, they did the sky color that day, so there were like 3 or 4 shades of blue, plus a couple of grays and a white. I think partly cloudy days were averaged out to a lighter blue depending how many clouds there were.
That's pretty cool!
That sounds pretty
i think this would also be a great idea with sunsets or how the sky looks on a specific time in the evening. Winter months would be like dark gray or blue and during summer even red or pink-
I live in England. It would be mostly grey 😭
Oh! A blanket on the actual weather is also a very nice idea.
I'm going to try doing one this year but I think on special days like birthdays and such I'll use a sparkly thread with my yarn for that day just because it was a special day this year
I like that idea!
Jayne Batchelor Nice!
That’s what I did! All the birthdays were sparkling thread with the color of the day. And it was the year of the eclipse so the eclipse day I used silver and black variegated yarn
Love this idea!
Where did you find the sparkly thread?
I live in Texas. My blanket would just be red. 🙃
Dear, I gifted a red one to my son this past Christmas, red's his favorite color but I had to choose the shade,, candy-apple red, my worries about my choice faded when I saw his face while he wrapped himself in the "made by mom" blanket... 😊 I love my son
In the winter months it would be a little more interesting considering in one day alone it goes from 40 in the morning to almost 70 in the afternoon... well it depends on the part of texas you are in
Lol!!
Lmfao!!! So true. I'm in SA.
Make a menopause blanket. Different shades of red for how bad the hot flashes are. Haha Pinks for cooler days.
Really interesting idea!!
Sam Withoutlimits Love your idea. It would be like a "mood" blanket, like mood rings used to be. You could maybe even use the colors the ring used, or use a color pallet that goes well in your home. It would be interesting to look back at it knowing it tells the story of how your year went.
I LOVE THIS!! It’s kinda like a mood tracker used in journaling, this is a fantastic idea!!!
@@bookswithb2684 yeah - journaling - that takes the idea to a different level - something to look back on and see how you did throughout the year - not the temp but you which makes it a whole lot more personal. thanks for that addition!
Mine would be so all over the place due to constant mood swings
"How to approximate amount of yarn?" No, no, no...more like, "Yes! Perfect excuse to get SOOO much yarn!"
MOOOOOOD
YAS
I am not allowed to start any more projects until I actually finish some of my WIPs.
I was just thinking about that. 😂😂😂✌
That's what I told myself last year, my one and only resolution. I failed miserably 😂
Me too 😁,but there are many ways to justify one more believe me!😆
Good luck with that lol
Me too, but I'm not letting such things stop me :-D
I'm thinking of doing one for each of my kids from the day they were born until their first birthday 💜
Does a red white blue and a blended red white blue within it. With DC to hc to sc I'm making it into it to a Cardigan started out as blanket lol it's retangle and I live in nursing home. And i live in Missouri very vet country my family are
That's a GREAT idea!!! Love it!!!
I did this for my grandchildren and my daughter. Planning more!
I tried one 3 different times but it came out all lopsided. I'm an experienced crocheter but I just couldn't conquer it.
MissyMagoo87 this is a great idea!!
Thank you for breaking this down. I came across a post about a temperature blanket that started with "I know people hate temperature blankets" and I was left wondering how people could have such strong opinions about something that sounded so innocuous and how I had been making for this long without having ever heard of this idea.
A 2020 mood blanket would be interesting 😆
Mine would be mostly blacks and grays. Lol
I was thinking a weather blanket. Sunshine, rain, snow, sleet, wind, and maybe cloudy days.
Not too late to do it as a retrospective... Maybe grey for days I didn't leave the house?
That's hilarious! It would probably try to strangle you in your sleep LOL
Mostly dark colorways
I randomly decided to do this for the first year of my husband and I's marriage. Big advice for those who are starting mid year, search up your city's weather records for the year! A lot of times those things are kept on record for people doing research, school projects and domestic projects like this! Its literally mid august and im able to find records from the start of the year!
You can also pretty easily find weather records on weather websites.
5:26 If there ain't a good spot in your house for a rainbow, then it's time to start living more fabulously.
This year she turns 16 so I think it'd be a cool thing to give her as she loves blankets.
wow. Would love to see that planner
Tried to see but wallmart keeps forcing me and sending to wallmart Brazil :-(
@@AnamariaMendes I couldn't find an image of the Crochet Journal, but I found the Knitting Journal. www.walmart.com/ip/Knitting-Journal-Knitting-Projects-Keep-Track-of-Your-Knitting-Crochet-Journal-Size-7x10-Paperback-Paperback/631882152
You sound like such a great mother. Your daughter is very lucky
Anamaria Mendes Search: crochet journal on amazon. 😍
I love the video, the only thing I wished for while watching was some pictures of the blankets you were talking about.💖
I did one for the average temperature per month for our first 10 years of marriage. Put white in between the years and added surface stitches on the birth month of my daughters. It is on our couch and love it. Btw it is made in neat ripple stitch.
I bet it came out so lovely 😍 and what a great idea !
❤❤
I tried this back in 2017 and made 2. I've found that I like using only two colors. My daughter's blanket was yellow and grey. Sunny days were yellow and rainy or snowy were grey. It turned out gorgeous. This year 2022, I plan on doing variegated beige and a cream since my decor is Boho.
I love this idea! Keeps it simple.
It was a lot of fun!!
o0oTyPo0o You could do one for someone special that reflects the weather the year they were born.
@@caryulmer5578 That is what I did. I made one for both my kids. As I stated in my comment, one from 1999 and 2008! I just wish I still had the pattern I used, because it worked out perfect.
What website did you use to find the temperature for that year
@@kaleenasarno6704 I believe it was weather underground. it's been a few years and can't remember for sure.
There are not enough colors created all over the world to create a blanket for Michigan that thing will look like a colorful mandala and it would be hug! I would love to see what you come up with
I made one for my first year living in SE MI. I used 12 colors and I absolutely love it!
Lol, I know exactly what you mean! I grew up in southwest Michigan and the weather changed by the minute. It's similar here in Ohio, so I'm only going with the high temperatures. Wish me luck!
I’m in Michigan and I am in fact doing that exact thing... a Mandela type blanket
I'm making one for Michigan. I found a really good template.
You could also do one color and change stitches insgeas
I feel like my entire blanket would be red. Born in July. Lol
I love this idea. Might have to do it for my mom and MIL. They'd both love them
Damn in texas it would look WILD. Its 30 F one day and 70 the next in "winter"
SOOOO TRUE!!!!!
LOL
Same goes for us in New England! One day there’s 6ft of snow and the next it’s all gone!
Yup
So I’m working down in southern texas as a Midwestern, and I can confirm this is the frickin case
I could never do a mood blanket. It would be STRESSED every day. lol
D
I'm thinking of making a temperature scarf Instead
Oh I like that idea. I have too many blankets in the works right now so a scarf might be exactly what I need to try this out!
Best idea ever
Naomi Hutchin ditto! I don’t want a big blanket but I thought 2 rows of each colour over the year would make a nice sized scarf. But then watching this video, I like the idea of 12 squares, you can see what each month looked like and get to do 12 different stitches! Moss stitch, back stitch, sc, hdc, etc. Now I’m conflicted! I started one last year and I don’t think I did two weeks worth of the scarf! Ha! Maybe charting the temperatures and doing a month at a time is more manageable?!
That's what Im doing. I started writing down the temp in my planner on the 1st and I'll officially start when I make up my mind about the colors lol
In a tusinian stitch!
I am glad i watched this before starting my temperature blanket. Some very good tips. Thank you.
I've not heard of a temperature blanket but I make mood blankets. I like the V stitch for this although obviously other stitches work. I just noticed I was picking random colours for each row and the colours mirrored my mood at the time. I have a lot of ends to hide but the blankets look good. I give them as gifts.
Margaret Davies Be careful with the V-stitch as the afghan can get insanely large.
@@ajmatt574 it did turn out big and I gave it to my Mum for her bed. The second one I've made for my daughter. Every row is a different colour. Lots of ends to sow in. They turned out lovely. I'd do it again but I'm aware now of how long they take being of a bigger size.
Margaret Davies I broke mine into two because it would’ve measured over 13ft long. I learned from experience.
One easy solution to make a blanket all-at-once-at-your-pace is to choose a previous year.
My thought exactly. Life will happen anyway. I probably will never get to make one, too many things to crochet, so little time. :)
Wonder if you could find like your birth date? But also in a different state?
I did this for the year my parents were married. You can find historical temperature that goes back AGES
I just started a temperature blanket September 1st, 2022. I am using half double crochet rows.
here i am in 2023.
I am making one this year so I'm excited that this popped up on your channel. I can't understand why people don't like them! They are so pretty.
Forget a temperature blanket, I feel a mood blanket for my daughter would be more interesting with the roller coaster of emotions she has.
The mood blanket sounds fun. I should create one for myself
It will get nicer each time you work on it.
Yesss that’ll be so cool 😁
What youtuber are you watching with the sample each month?
Crochet with Tiffany Hansen - m.youtube.com/@CrochetWithTiffany
This is 2022, but I just found this video. I hope your blanket came out as you hoped. When I made a temperature blanket, I did it for one month and I chose a variegated yarn and picked solid colors that matched. I loved my blanket and gave it to a prayer shawl ministry at my church. This year I am cross-stitching a temperature tree! We’ll see how that goes. LOL
What is a temperature tree? I don't knit or crochet so I am trying to find ways to join in the weather fun!
Drink a shot every time she says "temperature blanket" 😁
Are... are you still alive?!
I would have never guessed that was what my Grandmother made! A temperature blanket! I don't know who has it since she passed, but I hope they are enjoying it during this cold weather. Thank you.
This sounds like an interesting idea! You could get a child involved for a fun way to get them interested in crocheting.
Someone should do a daily overall mood blanket.
Different colors for happy, sad, tired, bored, anxious, etc,...
im going to do this after i finish my WIPS
i wanna try n do a mood scarf :O
I've never ever heard of this concept before! Interesting.
I started one for this year. Let's hope I complete it!! See you in Jan 2020 🤣
Did you ever finish?
Did you complete it??
I’ve been doing these for several years. I prefer to make one for the first year of life. I do the high from the day they were born to their first birthday. My nieces and nephews loved them!!
It’s true you don’t know the range when you live in a Texas! Just had 4 days of 60-70s and back to 40-50s in winter! Lol
Great ideas!
For those of you excited to do this project more power to ya have at it , just wasn't for me
dawn Amendola mood blanket sounds great I’m going to try one 🤗
I love the shirt! Where did you find it?
I like it also. Would like to buy one

thanks girl, I literally came to the comments just for this!
I did a knitted temperature scarf in 2019 and really liked how it turned out. The only thing I’d change if I did another one would be more colors/smaller temp ranges.
I love your videos and I think you are awesome! ❤️🙂
I started one last year using granny squares that I attached as I crocheted them. I hated that approach and did not finish. I enjoy your enthusiasm.
I live in NC lmao the temperature changes here from 80 degrees to 43 in a day
Why do people waste their time on hating something?
It would be really interesting if you could make blankets using the temperatures from almanacs to show global warming and climate change!
Why not use last year for the guide?
I was thinking this would be a great project for a pregnant mom or to make for a new baby , you could start on the day they were born!
BlowItOutYourCunt would be cool to make throughout a pregnancy too
Been knitting and crocheting for 50 years and have never heard of temperature blankets before. As I've read through some of the comments here, you could really do some wonderful variations on this. Thinking about Dr. Seuss' 'My Many Colored Days,' you could make one based on your mood for the day. So many interesting ideas for this!
