Repaired me an oldish Thinkpad X61 Running Windows 7 on it, threw in 4gb of RAM and a SSD. Runs fantastic. Loving the touch screen for drawing in manga studio.
Great video, Tom! Interesting, I have a ThinkPad T410s i5 laptop and its screen has very good hinges, you can easily open it with one hand and it doesn't lift the whole computer up. But maybe that's only with the T series... My old T42 after almost 10 years still has excellent hinges. :) ThinkPads are amazingly built...

Rocking an IBM(!) R50e over here, these older ThinkPads are just outstanding, great find! I bought mine for £40 including the charger, it had only 5 days of use according to the hard drive! It's almost 11 years old! They feel like if you dropped them they'd do more damage to the floor then they would to themselves. I'll be sticking an SSD in mine just to make it that extra bit more reliable. No moving parts when the system's cool enough to run without its fan on!

ItsMyNaturalColour That's why I love these IBM and Lenovo machines. They weigh a ton but you can just feel the excellent build quality seeping through their cases. Sticking a SSD in mine won't do a whole lot performance wise since it uses IDE, but it'll help a bit and it'll allow me to throw it around a bit :p I have a soft spot for IBM/Lenovo ThinkPads and ThinkCentres, they look amazing, build quality is outstanding, and they're great performers.

I'm working a lot with Dell Latitude E6520's now, Got a bunch that came out of lease from a large company. Very nice machines. All i5 vPro machines, bluetooth, Solid state drives, the works. Why don't you bootcamp or use something like vmware on your macbook? You've probably got a good reason because you're smart like that, but I'm still curious as to why.
Tom, when you get w7 or whatever loaded up, download the lenovo system update tool. It just downloads all the drivers and software you need for it real easy (just uncheck shareit and reachit which are pretty pointless).
Classic Thinkpads are really great laptops and while they do not appeal to modern users that don't understand what it means to have a real laptop the R61 is nice. Got one myself that I upgraded, original board failed so I used a spare T61 series board with the Nvidia NVS140 and improved the cooling a bit. You can upgrade the cpu a good ways as well go for a full 8GB ram if you want (expensive by today's standards) and go for a SSD. It is a good to have thick screens as they are less likely to get cracked compared to modern laptops but then again the cancer that was HP from the same era often break when anyone sneezed in the general direction. If you ever decided to collect another Thinkpad look for a W500 or a T60P with the IPS screen.
I recently picked up a ThinkCentre M57p with 4gb of ram and Intel core 2 VPro 2.3ghz CPU. It was on Ebay for $40 Us dollars. I upgraded it 6gb of ram and a Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600. The CPU out of my first working Hackintosh.
+pigsydney I like that aspect too. One day I may get my hands on one of the later models. You can get Sandy Bridge Thinkpads that look just like this. Lots of power crammed into a very cool looking retro design.
Errm before you put an SSD in it, you might want to see if it's Sata III. I made that mistake with my PS3 and it decreased the GTA loading time by about 2 seconds...
you are going to love that thing sereously. i had one at school which was epic until the battery went and then they dumped me with a crap net book that died so after 3 of those killed themselves i got a little samsung that works a lot like the think pad

Tom you can have windows on a mac BUT most importantly you have a brand new pc the hackintosh which didn't work out and just why not install windows on it at this point. The hackintosh project didn't work! Why buy another new pc?

I too switched to Mac because of Vista, awful OS But I got myself a nice deal on a Dell Vostro 1000 2GHZ Core 2 Duo 4 GB Ram 500GB Hard Drive DVDRW Only cost me £40 but I had a 60 mile round trip to pick it up. Like you I wanted something to do Windows stuff, plus the Superdrive on my iMac is a bit flaky when it comes to DVDRs

Very nice machine indeed!!! as a backup laptop i have an HP Compaq nx6110 (very old) rocking an 1.4Ghz Celeron single core CPU and 1 GB of RAM (it had 512MB before the upgrade) and it still does a good job as a torrent machine... i hope the hard drive will last, that's my only concern... IDE 2.5' drives in good shape must be hard to find!!!

Since it's a T7xxx Core 2 Duo I assume that it's socket M, so you can get up to a 2.33ghz T7600 but I bought a 2.2ghz T7500 on ebay for an iMac 4,1 because it was significantly cheaper ($7 vs. ~$35 USD)

UmbreonGamer Why would you rather use a G3 than a D630? I have personally owned and used both (D630 is my main laptop). I don't have a problem with Macs, although I always prefer Windows, but I fail to understand why you converted. G3s are pretty bad compared to the Core 2 Duo like the one in the D630. I do however really like the Powermac G5, I have a dual 2.0 with 1GB of ram running Leopard. Runs great for a 12 year old desktop.
Try Ubuntu Mate or Ubuntu Gnome (-; Maybe Ubuntu Studio I'm Using Ubuntu Mate on a Netbook from 2008 with 1GB of RAM and 160GB HD, works slowly, but works better than Windows XP

When I have slammed Windows based laptops in the past, I've been referring to those cheap pieces of junk that almost everybody buys. There is a MASSIVE amount of laptops out there that I believe to be of bad quality. This isn't one of them.

I'am useing Zeorin 11 core 64bit Os. on my R61. It works great ! ! I'am now thing about getting a SSD drive for it.

2:24 that is called PCMCIA or personal computer memory card association. it's basically the sd card's predecessor.
While the quality has improved, I certainly didn't mind how your older style of doing the unboxings, that's probably just me though.
